  • In this study, the relationships between hydraulic conductivity of GCLs and physico-chemical properties of bentonites were assessed. In addition to four factory manufactured GCLs, six artificially prepared GCLs (AP-GCLs) were tested. AP-GCLs were prepared in the laboratory without bonding or stitching. A total of 20 hydraulic conductivity tests were conducted using flexible wall permeameters ten of which were permeated with distilled deionized water (DIW) and the rest were permeated with tap water (TW). The hydraulic conductivity of GCLs and AP-GCLs were between $5.2{\times}10^{-10}cm/s$ and $3.0{\times}10^{-9}cm/s$. The hydraulic conductivities of all GCLs to DIW were very similar to that of GCLs to TW. Then, simple regression analyses were conducted between hydraulic conductivity and physicochemical properties of bentonite. The best correlation coefficient was achieved when hydraulic conductivity was related with clay content (R=0.85). Liquid limit and plasticity index were other independent variables that have good correlation coefficients with hydraulic conductivity (R~0.80). The correlation coefficient with swell index is less than other parameters, but still fairly good (R~0.70). In contrast, hydraulic conductivity had poor correlation coefficients with specific surface area (SSA), smectite content and cation exchange capacity (CEC) (i.e., R < 0.5). Furthermore, some post-test properties of bentonite such as final height and final water content were correlated with the hydraulic conductivity as well. The hydraulic conductivity of GCLs had fairly good correlation coefficients with either final height or final water content. However, those of AP-GCLs had poor correlations with these variables on account of fiber free characteristics.

  • Because of the rapid development of computer technology in recent years, wave models can utilize parallel calculations for the high-resolution prediction of open sea and coastal areas with high accuracy. Parallel calculations also allow national agencies in the relevant sectors to produce marine forecasting data through massive parallel calculations. Meanwhile, the eastern coast of the Korean Peninsula has been increasingly damaged by swell-like high waves, and many researchers and scientists are continuing their efforts to anticipate and reduce the damage. In general, the short-term transformation of swell-like high waves can be reproduced relatively well in the third generation wave models, but the transformation of relatively long period waves needs to be simulated with higher accuracy in terms of the nonlinear wave interactions to gain a better understanding of the low-frequency wave generation and development mechanisms. In this study, we developed a calculation module to improve the calculation of the nonlinear energy transfer in the 3rd generation wave model and integrated it into the wave model to effectively consider the nonlinear wave interaction. First, the nonlinear energy transfer calculation module and third generation model were combined. Then, the combined model was used to reproduce the wave transformation due to the nonlinear interaction, and the performance of the developed operation module was verified.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the efficiency of four different cleaning method of silk and to fabrics, which were excavated from the sixteenth century tombs. The four cleaning methods were hand washing in water and hand washing in solvent, washing in ultrasonic cleaner, and using of ultrasonic gun after washing in ultrasonic cleaner. The following is the result of the experiment: ㆍBoth silk and jute fabrics shrank the most after hand-wash in water. This cleaning method decreased their thickness the most but changed their strength the least. However, the color of the fabric changed the most after had-wash in water. This washing method might discolor the dyed fabric, so one must check the condition of the fabric thoroughly before washing it. ㆍThe weight and the thickness of the fabric changed little after ultrasonic cleaning. This cleaning method, therefore. is less efficient than hand-water-wash. The use of ultrasonic gun after ultrasonic wash for partial cleansing enhanced the efficiency a little. Nevertheless, this method left stain around the area where the gun was used, and the injected water could damage the fabric. ㆍThe excavated fabric became softer in the cleaning process as the dirt was washed away. In both cases of silk and jute fabrics cleaning, solvent made the fabric softer than water. Washed in solvent, the fabric did not swell. But water penetrated to the fiber during the cleaning process and made the fabric swell. When the water evaporates, the swollen fiber structure collapses and the fabric become stiff. Ultrasonic wash did not cause much change in the flexibility of the fabric, for this method does not remove the dirt as effectively as the other method.

  • The influence of fungicidal spray was assessed on powdery mildew epidemics caused by Erysiphe polygoni D.C. and on yield-attributing characters of mungbean [Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek]. Mildew attack adversely affected the yield-attributing characters of mungbean and exhibited negative significant correlation with pod length (-0.57), pods/plant (-0.74), pod weight (-0.68), 100 seeds weight (-0.69), 100 seeds swell weight (-0.59), and seed germination (-0.71). These characters had direct or indirect effects on grain yield, which was also adversely affected due to mildew attack (-0.89). Powdery mildew was significantly retarded due to the single spray of carbendazim (0.05%) at 30-day-old crop, where the apparent rate of infection (r) was minimum at 0.0095/ unit/day and with low (11.44%) powdery mildew intensity. Other fungicides like tridemorph (0.075%) and penconazole (0.05%) were equally effective against the mildew disease where the disease intensity was less than 20% and the values of r were 0.0134 and 0.039/unit/day respectively, as compared with the control at 0.267/unit/day. Fungicide spray influenced the yield-attributing characters besides controlling the disease. Such effects were more pronounced in carbendazim (0.05%)-treated plots due to its phytotonic nature where pod length (7.59cm), pods/plant (29.75), pod weight (8.16 g), 100 grain weight (3.94 g), and swell weight of 100 seed (9.49 g) were maximum resulting to the highest yield (480 kg/ha) as compared with that of control (224 kg/ha). Spray of carbendazim also improved seed germination (74.5%). Spray of other fungicides like carbendazim with copper oxychloride in 1:1 ratio, tridemorph (0.075%), and penconazole (0.05%) was equally effective against powdery mildew of mungbean. These fungicides also exhibited positive effects on yield-attributing characters of the crop and finally increased yield. These systemic fungicides were more effective in controlling powdery mildew disease of V. radiata in the rainy season compared with wettable sulphur.

  • Recently, new distributed power sources such as photovoltaic, wind power, fuel cell systems etc. are energetically interconnected and operated in the distribution feeders, as one of the national projects for alternative energy. When new power sources are considered to be interconnected to distribution systems, bi-directional power flow and interconnection conditions of new power sources may cause several power quality problems like voltage sag, voltage swell, harmonics, since new power sources can change typical characteristics of distribution systems. Under these situations, this paper deals with the analysis the power quality problems at primary and secondary feeders in distribution systems, when new power sources like photovoltaic (PV) systems are interconnected, by using the test devices for PV systems based on the LabVIEW S/W. This paper presents the test device which is consisted with model distribution system and model PV systems. By performing the simulation for power quality operation characteristic based on the test facilities, this paper presents the optimal countermeasures for power quality.

  • This paper is used in a recent civil engineering field in three-dimensional laser-meter tiles using thermal imaging cameras for the weathered rock slopes precisely measured indirectly, to the degree that began in the will. In the field is difficult to access the degree of weathering of the rock slope to the existing direct way to compensate for the shortcomings of 3D Terrestrial Laser Scanner and weathering characteristics of rocks using thermal imaging cameras to get the information to analyze the degree of rock weathering is. Intensity of 3D TLS and the thermal camera with image analysis to analyze the degree of weathering of bedrock in the field of core drilling targeting indoor laboratory tests were analyzed through the study. Granite, gneiss, sandstone, much of the cancerous samples, each experiment has a 40 per category, each of which 30 were used to analyze the data collected. That degree of rock weathering, the rock, depending on the strength of the Intensity values can change, depending on the level of thermal imaging camera, also weathered the changes in temperature could see. Intensity is the strength of weak rocks, the more value decrease, the temperature of the thermal imaging camera through the swell Intensity and notice that the temperature had an inverse relationship. Intensity value of the low strength of weak rock, but the value came out of the rocks have been proved to be largely dependent on the contrast. The contrast of the surface rocks are weathered dark Intensity values lower temperature to swell the contrary, the degree of weathering can be distinguished.

  • Switching characteristics in both linear and nonlinear loads are analysed for a 3-phase voltage disturbance generator applicable to the performance test of custom power devices. Since the line current of the linear load is continuous the natural commutation of the SCR thyristors comprising the generator is carried out with ease. However, in case of nonlinear load the natural commutation scheme is different from that of the linear load due to the discontinuous load current. Through the analysis it is found that a specific switching condition can provide the voltage sag, swell, outage, and voltage unbalance generation in nonlinear load too. The operation of the voltage disturbance generation is described and the usefulness of the generator is verified through simulation and experimental results. It is expected that the generator can be used in the performance test of the custom power devices with low implementation cost and easy control.

  • With the aim of developing of pH-sensitive controlled drug release system, a poly(Llysine) (PLL) based cationic semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN) has been synthesized. This cationic hydrogel was designed to swell at lower pH and de-swell at higher pH and therefore be applicable for achieving regulated drug release at a specific pH range. In addition to the pH sensitivity, this hydrogel was anticipated to interact with an ionic drug, providing another means to regulate the release rate of ionic drugs. This semi-IPN hydrogel was prepared using a free-radical polymerization method and by crosslinking of the polyethylene glycol (PEG)-methacrylate polymer through the PLL network. The two polymers were penetrated with each other via interpolymer complexation to yield the semi-IPN structures. The PLL hydrogel thus prepared showed dynamic swelling/de-swelling behavior in response to pH change, and such a behavior was influenced by both the concentrations of PLL and PEG-methacrylate. Drug release from this semi-IPN hydrogel was also investigated using a model protein drug, streptokinase. Streptokinase release was found to be dependent on its ionic interaction with the PLL backbones as well as on the swelling of the semi-IPN hydrogel. These results suggest that a PLL semi-IPN hydrogel could potentially be used as a drug delivery platform to modulate drug release by pH-sensitivity and ionic interaction.

  • In the present study, the storm waves at the Korean Straits of April, 2016 have been reproduced by the wave hindcasting, and then their characteristics were investigated. Before the wave hindcasting, the wave measurements at the Korean Straits were analyzed. The analysis showed that the waves at the Korean Straits were dominated by the Northeastern waves, same as those in the East Sea. Accordingly, the wave hindcasting was been carried out with the same condition in Ahn et al. (2016). In the numerical results, the maximum significant wave height at the Korean Straits was 5.06 m, and the corresponding significant wave period was 9.2 s. The computed significant wave heights and wave periods were overestimated by 4 cm and 0.8 s, respectively. After the wave hindcasting, the computed significant wave heights and peak periods were compared with the JONSWAP relationship. This comparison showed that the storm waves at the Korean Straits were close to wind waves, not swell.
