The current status and the improvable directions of the farm household economy survey (농가경제조사의 현황과 개선 방향)

  • The Farm Household Economy Survey (FHES) is carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry every year. In this paper, we reveiwed the current status of the FHES and assessed the precision of the survey results. Finally we proposed some recommendations for improving the precision and presented the improvable directions of FHES with some feasible solutions.

  • This study is to adjust the focus on the statistical survey about the rates of application for the 2005 Susi second semester admission to Universities in Daegu, Kyungbook. The decrease of population for university admission and the change of paradigm of selecting a field of specialization in university will have an adverse effect on ratios of admission. This is very important to the future of university in Daegu, Kyungbook.

  • In this paper. we conducted an empirical study to investigate the design and weighting effects on descriptive and analytic statistics. We compared the regression models using the design-based approach and the generalized estimating equations (GEEs) approach with the model-based approach through the design and weighting effects analysis.

  • Many researches have been devoted to the small area estimation related with the area level statistics. Almost all of the small area estimation methods are derived based on minimization of mean squared error(MSE). Recently Hwang and Shin (2008) suggested an alternative small area estimation method by minimizing mean squared percentage error. In this paper we apply this small area estimation method to the labor statistics, especially monthly wages by a branch area of labor department. The Monthly Labor Survey data (2007) is used for analysis and comparison of these methods.

  • Propensity score adjustment(PSA) has been suggested as approach to adjustment for volunteer internet survey. PSA attempts to decrease the biases arising from noncoverage and nonprobability sampling in volunteer panel internet surveys. Although PSA is an appealing method, its application for internet survey regarding Korea presidential election and its effectiveness is not well investigated. In this study, we compare the Ni Korea internet survey with the telephone survey conducted by MBMR and KBS for 2007 Korean presidential election. The result of study show that the accuracy of internet survey can be improved by using PSA. And it is critical to include covariates that highly related to the voting tendency and the role of nondemographic variables seems important to improving PSA for Korea presidential election prediction.

  • The farm population survey and the livestock survey are sample surveys related to agriculture. Two new sample designs for these surveys are considered. Shi-Gun(county) estimates in the farm population survey and Shi-Do(county) estimates in the livestock survey can be obtained. Also the sample sizes are reduced. To increase the precision of the estiamtes strarified simple random samples are used and particularly purposive samples are introduced in livestock survey. Lastly the method of management and replacement of samples are investigated for successive occasion survey.

  • The very first statistics department in Korean universities was founded in 1962, meaning it has been 57 years since Korean academia has regarded statistics as a wholly independent field of study. Dr. Junbo Kim was the first faculty member hired by Korea University's statistics department. He made a seminal contribution to the development and publication of statistics textbooks in those early years, and in 1971, spearheaded the efforts to found the Korean Statistical Society, serving as its first president. Naturally, Dr. Kim's significant contributions have laid the cornerstones for the advancement of statistics as an independent field of study in Korea. In this paper, I will explore two main subjects: one is the early history of the Korean Statistical Society with a special emphasis on Dr. Kim's contributions, and the other is an analytical overview his publications. Specifically, I will focus on Modern Statistics: A Synthesis of Statistics and Estimates』(Kim, 1954), and 『Inferential Statistics: An Introduction to Sample Survey and Experimental Design』(Kim, 1956).

Comparison of infant mortality and associated factors between Korean and immigrant women in Korea: an 11-year longitudinal study

  • Purpose: This study compared infant mortality and its associated factors between Korean and immigrant women using vital statistics gathered by Statistics Korea. Methods: Birth and death statistics from the period between 2009 and 2019 were extracted from the census of population dynamics data of the Microdata Integrated Service, Korea. Statistical data were derived from a complete survey and infant mortality was analyzed from mortality statistics data. Descriptive statistics were used for comparison. Results: The average infant mortality rate (IMR) of Korean women was 2.7 in Korea, which did not change significantly between 2009 and 2019; however, the IMR of immigrant women increased significantly in 2018 to 4.2 and subsequently decreased to 2.6 in 2019. Moreover, the age of Korean and immigrant women at the time of infant death gradually increased from 31.1 years and 25.9 years in 2009 to 32.8 years and 30.9 years in 2019, respectively. The gestational age was lower for deceased infants born to immigrant women (mean, 31.04 weeks; standard deviation [SD], 6.42; median, 30.00) compared to infants born to Korean women (mean, 31.71 weeks; SD, 6.48; median, 32.00). Immigrant women (91.7%) received slightly fewer antenatal care visits compared to Korean women (93.1%). Conclusion: It is vital to devise a plan to lower the IMR of immigrant women in Korea. Moreover, it is necessary to explore the factors related to infant mortality among immigrant women within the context of Korean societal situation, culture, and home environment.

A Study on the Use of Cluster Analysis for Multivariate and Multipurpose Stratification (군집분석을 이용한 다목적 조사의 층화에 관한 연구)

  • This paper considers several stratification strategies for multivariate and multipurpose survey with several quantitative stratification variables. We propose three methods of stratification based on, respectively, the method of cumulative frequency square root which is the most popular one in univariate stratification, cluster analysis, and factor analysis followed by cluster analysis. We then compare the efficiency of those methods using the Dong-Eup-Myun data of the holding numbers of farming machines, extracted from the 2001 Agricultural Census. It turned out that the method based on cluster analysis with factor analysis would be a relatively satisfactory strategy.

A Composite Estimator for the Take-Nothing Stratum of Cut-Off Sampling (복합추정량을 이용한 절사표본 총합 추정에 관한 연구)

  • Cut-off sampling that discards a part of the population from the sampling frame, is a widely used method for a highly skewed population like a business survey. Usually to the estimate of population total, we need to estimate the total of the take-nothing stratum. Many estimators have been developed to estimate the total of the take-nothing stratum. In this paper, we suggest a new composite estimator which combines the estimator suggested by Sarndal et al. (1992) and a ratio estimator obtained by small samples from the take-nothing stratum. Small simulation studies are performed for the comparison of the estimators and we confirm that the new suggested estimator is superior to the others.
