We observed a surge associated with an Ellerman bomb using the Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph(FISS) of the New Solar Telescope at Big Bear Solar Observatory. The surge was seen in absorption and varied rapidly both in H alpha and Ca II 8542 line. It originated from the Ellerman bomb, and was impulsively accelerated to 20km/s of the blueshift(upward) motion. Then the gradual change from blueshift of 20km/s to redshift of 40km/s occurred in 20 minutes. Based on the measured line-of-sight velocities, we estimated the material reached up to about 5,000km height. We inferred physical parameters of the surge by adopting the cloud model, and found that the temperature of the surge material was about 25,000K and the non-thermal velocity was about 10km/s. Our results suggest that the surge might be heated intensely after it was ejected from the Ellerman bomb.
It is currently increasing to use surge protection devices in the protection of various electronic circuits from the transient overvoltages such as lightning strikes and switching surges. For this reason, the simulation methods, which can easily predict the protection performance of the devices, are strongly required in order to design the adequate surge protection circuits in lightning surge cut-off performance and economic aspects. This paper deals with ZnO varistor modeling method for designing a surge protection circuit and suggests the Pspice simulation model which takes the characteristic of varying clamping voltage into consideration during the time-to-crest, in range of $8{\sim}30{\mu}s$, of surge current applied to a ZnO varistor. The ZnO varistor Pspice simulation data introduced in this paper has produced almost same values as the measured results experimentally.

Generally, speed control for Induction motor widely used in industrial field is accomplished by commercial inverter. Induction motor driven by commercial inverter causes the micro surge voltage because of high speed switching of inverter. Micro surge brings about not only the breakdown of motor but also noise in PLC control system. And they court the enormous interference in activity for production. In this paper, we suggest the suppressible countermeasure for the breakdown of motor after the consideration of productive mechanism about micro surge. Experiment is performed by inverter with LCR filler in its output terminal. As a result, we confirmed that micro surge voltage is reduced. And the suppressible countermeasure for the noise of PLC control system is suggested by theoretical consideration.

This paper deals with the effects of grounding conductors for metal oxide surge arresters. When surge arresters are improperly installed, the results can cause costly damage of electrical equipments. In particular, the route of surge arrester connection is very important because bends and links of leads increase the impedances to lightning surges and tend to nullify the effectiveness of a grounding conductor. Therefore, there is a need to know how effective installation of lightning surge arresters is made in order to control voltage and to absorb energy at high lightning currents. The effectiveness of a grounding conductor and 18 [㎸] metal oxide distribution line arresters was experimentally investigated under the lightning and oscillatory impulse voltages. Thus, the results are as follows; (1) The induced voltage of a grounding conductor is drastically not affected by length of a connecting line, but it is very sensitive to types of grounding conductor. (2) The coaxial cable having a low characteristic impedance is suitable as a grounding conductor. (3) It is also clear from these results that bonding the metal raceway enclosing the grounding conductor to the grounding electrode is very effective because of skin effect. (4) The induced voltages of grounding conductors for the oscillatory impulse voltages are approximately twice as large as those for the lightning impulse voltages.

Lightning is one of hazards affecting the rapid-transit railway system. There are two effects, which are direct lightning surge to electric car line and induced lightning surge. Protection methods for the direct lightning surge are studied with various occasions, however, study of induced lightning surge is insufficient in spite of a large or small effects. In this paper, it is analysed the way that serge voltage is induced to electric car line by lightning strikes. By modeling the propagation process and the coupling phenomenon of electromagnetic wave produced by lightning strikes, it is achieved to make integrative circuit model combined with existing electric car model. The study is conducted into three different waveform of electromagnetic wave produced by lightning; rectangular wave, double exponential distribution wave, triangle wave. It is also simulated that the inducing serge is coupled to electric car line in an arbitrary location. The simulation results in that, when rapidly changing rectangular wave is supplied, maximum power is induced to electric car line.

Phenomena of hydraulic transient such as water hammer should be analyzed to design the pipeline systems effectively in dam. Surge tanks generally are used to reduce change in pressure caused by hydraulic transient from load changes on the turbines. In this study, the appropriate scale of surge tank with chamber is investigated for dam safety management. The variation of water level in the surge tank are computed using governing equation. Using the Thoma-Jaeger's stability condition, static and dynamic stability are investigate for the cases of flood water level, normal high water level, rated water level and low water level. Finally appropriate diameters of shaft and chamber are determined in the surge tank with chamber.
This study tested the hypothesis that the priming effects of progesterone on the timing of the LH surge induced by exogenous estradiol are more potentiated the negative feedback actions of progesterone on LH secretion by the existence of estradiol. In previous studies, the time interval from estradiol infusion until the peak of LH surge was gradually and significantly extended by the different levels of progesterone treated before estradiol infusions. Longterm ovariectomized Shiba goats that had received implants of estradiol capsules (Day 0) and three different progesterone silastic packet inducing follicular, subluteal and luteal levels of progesterone were divided into three groups such as non-P, low-P and high-P group. Blood samples were collected daily throughout the experiment for the analysis of gonadal steroid hormone levels. On Day 7, all devices of progesterone and estradiol packets were removed but estradiol capsules were maintained during the experiment, and blood samples were collected at 1 hr interval for 12 h from the time of progesterone removals to determine peripheral changes of estradiol and progesterone concentration. Then all animals were infused estradiol on the Day 7 after 13 h from the removals of progesterone devices with a peristaltic pump into jugular vein at a rate of 3-6 ${\mu}g/h$ for 36 h. For analysis of peripheral LH and estradiol concentration, blood samples were collected via another jugular vein at 2 h intervals for 52 h (from 4 h before the start of estradiol infusion to 48 h after the start of estradiol infusion). In all animals of the three groups treated with estradiol infusion, an LH surge was expressed but the peak time of LH surge was different. This time interval was not extended by the different levels of progesterone treated before estradiol infusions and the difference was not significant during this interval between the Low P and the High P groups. Progesterone pretreatment may contribute to regulating the neural system that is responded by estradiol, and estradiol existence potentiates the negative feedback effect of progesterone on GnRH/LH surge-generating system.

In this study, we have estimated the storm surge heights using numerical modeling on coastal area, and then evaluated the vulnerability index by applying the vulnerability assessment techniques. Surge modelling for 27 typhoons affected from 2000 to 2014 were simulated by applying the ADCIRC model. The results of validation and verification was in significant agreement as compared with observations for the top 6 ranking typhoons affected. As results, the storm surge heights in Jinhae Bay, Sacheon Bay, Gwangyang Bay, Cheonsu Bay and Gyeonggi Bay were higher than other inner coastal areas, then storm surge vulnerability assessment was performed using a standardization, normalization and gradation of storm surge heights. According to results of storm surge vulnerability assessment, index of Jinhae Bay, Sacheon Bay, Gwangyang Bay etc. are estimated to be vulnerable(4~5) because of the characteristics of storm surge such as inner bay are vulnerable compared with exposed to the open sea areas. However, index in the inner bay of western Jeonnam are not vulnerable(1~3) relatively. It may not appear the typhoons affected significantly for the past 15 years. So, the long-term vulnerability assessment with the sensitivity of geomorphology are necessary to reduce the uncertainty.

The aspects of typhoon-induced surges were classified into three types at the Western coast, and their characteristics were examined. The typhoons OLGA (9907) and KOMPASU (1007) were the representative steep types. As they pass close to the coasts with fast translation velocity, the time of maximum surge is unrelated to tidal phase. However, typhoons PRAPIROON (0012) and BOLAVEN (1215) were the representative mild types, which pass at a long distance to the coasts with slow translation velocity, and were characterized by having maximum surge time is near low tide. Meanwhile, typhoons MUIFA (1109) and WINNIE (9713) can be classified into mild types, but they do not show the characteristics of the mild type. Thus they are classified into propagative type, which are propagated from the outside. Analyzing the annual highest high water level data, the highest water level ever had been recorded when the WINNIE (9713) had attacked. At that time, severe astronomical tide condition overlapped modest surge. Therefore, if severe astronomical tide encounter severe surge in the future, tremendous water level may be formed with very small probability. However, considering that most of the huge typhoons are mild type, time of maximum surge tends to occur at low tide. In case of estimating the extreme water level by a numerical simulation, it is necessary not only to apply various tide conditions and accompanying tide-modulated surge, but also to scrutinize typhoon parameters such as translation velocity and so on.
In recent, according to the tightening of environment regulation policy, the height of the site of the power plant is increased and the length of the cooling water pipe is increased. This has a serious impact on the stability of the plant. This study analyzes the transient phenomenon using LIQT 7.2, an unsteady state one-dimensional analysis software, to secure the stability of 1,000 MW high-capacity coal-fired power plant cooling water system with high head. To prevent water hammer, The effects on performance characteristics were predicted by individual and combination application. The surge pressure of the cooling water which occurs when the pump was stopped without installing the anti-surge devices was the largest at the pump outlet side. The most effective and simple way to reduce surge pressure in these cooling water systems is to combine a vacuum breaker with a hydraulic non-return valve, which is an essential device for pump protection.
