In this study, the internal waves in two-density layered fluids were analyzed using the Numerical Wave Tank (NWT) technique in the frequency domain. The NWT is based on a two-domain Boundary Element Method with the potential fluids using the whole-domain matrix scheme. From the mathematical solution of the two-domain boundary integral equation, two different wave modes could be classified: a surface wave mode and an internal wave mode, and each mode were shown to have a wave number determined by a respective dispersion relation. The magnitudes of the internal waves against surface waves were investigated for various fluid densities and water depths. The calculated results are compared with available theoretical data.
In this study, a nonlinear wave simulation code is developed using a higher-order spectral (HOS) method. The HOS method is very efficient because it can determine the solution of the boundary value problem using fast Fourier transform (FFT) without matrix operation. Based on the HOS order, the vertical velocity of the free surface boundary was estimated and applied to the nonlinear free surface boundary condition. Time integration was carried out using the fourth order Runge-Kutta method, which is known to be stable for nonlinear free-surface problems. Numerical stability against the aliasing effect was guaranteed by using the zero-padding method. In addition to simulating the initial wave field distribution, a nonlinear adjusted region for wave generation and a damping region for wave absorption were introduced for wave generation simulation. To validate the developed simulation code, the adjusted simulation was carried out and its results were compared to the eighth order Stokes theory. Long-time simulations were carried out on the irregular wave field distribution, and nonlinear wave propagation characteristics were observed from the results of the simulations. Nonlinear adjusted and damping regions were introduced to implement a numerical wave tank that successfully generated nonlinear regular waves. According to the variation in the mean wave steepness, irregular wave simulations were carried out in the numerical wave tank. The simulation results indicated an increase in the nonlinear interaction between the wave components, which was numerically verified as the mean wave steepness. The results of this study demonstrate that the HOS method is an accurate and efficient method for predicting the nonlinear interaction between waves, which increases with wave steepness.
Surface wave techniques are widely used as non-invasive method for geotechnical site characterization. Field surface wave data are collected and analyzed using different processing techniques to generate the dispersion curves, which are further used to extract the shear wave velocity profile by inverse problem solution. Characteristics of a dispersion curve depend on the subsurface layering information of a vertically heterogeneous medium. Sometimes soft layer can be found between two stiff layers in the vertically heterogeneous media, and it can affect the wave propagation dramatically. Now most of the surface wave techniques use the fundamental mode Rayleigh wave propagation during the inversion, but this may not be the actual scenario when a soft layer is present in a vertically layered medium. This paper presents a detailed and comprehensive study using finite element method to examine the effect of soft layers which sometimes get trapped between two high velocity layers. Determination of the presence of a soft layer is quite important for proper mechanical characterization of a soil deposit. Present analysis shows that the thickness and position of the trapped soft layer highly influence the dispersion of Rayleigh waves while the higher modes also contribute in the resulting wave propagation.

In this study, the advanced on-sided stress wave velocity measurement method was applied to investigate the effects of composition, age and moisture content in concrete. Two concrete specimens that have different composition were used to figure out the change of the Longitudinal and Surface wave velocity due to different composition. The other concrete specimen was cast and the Longitudinal and Surface wave velocity was monitored during curing process. After 28-day old, the effect of moisture content in the concrete specimen to the stress wave velocity is presented in this paper during the time period 43-74 days after casting. For drying process. an aggregate drying oven was used. A conventional ultrasonic through transmission method was used to compare with the results determined by the one-sided method.

Geotechnical sites in urban areas may have embedded structures such as utility lines and underground concrete structures, which cause difficulties in site investigation. This study is a preliminary research to establish knowledge base for developing an optimal technique for site investigation in urban areas. Surface-wave method and resistivity survey, which are frequently adopted for non-destructive site-investigation for geotechnical sites, were investigated to characterize effects of adjacent structures. In case of surface wave method, patterns of wave propagation were investigated for typical sets of multi-layered geotechnical profiles by numerical simulation based on forward modeling theory and field experiments for small-size model tests and real-scale tests in the field. In case of resistivity survey, 3-D finite element analyses and field tests were performed to investigate effects of adjacent concrete structures. These theoretical and experimental researches for surface-wave method and resistivity survey resulted in establishing physical criteria to cause interference of adjacent structures in site investigation at urban areas.
A finite difference method for calculating turbulent flow and surface wave fields around a ship model is evaluated through the comparison with the experimental data of a Series 60 $C_B$=0.6 ship model. The method solves the Reynolds-averaged Navior-Stokes Equations using the non-staggered grid system, the four-stage Runge-Kutta scheme for the temporal integration of governing equations and the Bladwin-Lomax model for the turbulence closure. The free surface waves are captured by solving the equation of the kinematic free-surface condition using the Lax-Wendroff scheme and free-surface conforming grids are generated at each time step so that one of the grid surfaces coincides always with the free surface. The computational results show an overall close agreement with the experimental data and verify that the present method can simulate well the turbulent boundary layers and wakes as well as the free-surface waves.
Recently, The surface-wave method has widely been used for the site investigation due to the economic advantage and the improved reliability. The typical surface-wave methods currently available are SASW method, MASW method and CSW method. The CSW method has a potential of high-quality measurement, but its inherent problems limited its use to the special cases such as the compaction-quality control. The CSW method uses the steady-state harmonic vibration for the seismic source as in the steady-state Rayleigh-wave method, which is superior to the impact source used for other methods. This study proposed a new procedure to solve the inherent problems of the CSW method and to improve the reliability of the CSW measurements. To verify the validity of the proposed in this study, the SASW results were compared with the CSW results for the numerical simulation of the CSW testing. Also, the feasibility of the proposed method was verified using the field measurements at a geotechnical site.
This paper investigated the dispersion characteristics of horizontal surface waves as means to apply conversional SASW techniques. To verify this proposal, 3D finite element analysis and Transfer matrix solution were performed. SH wave(Love waves) has the some advantages in comparison with Rayleigh wave. Representatively, Love wave has a characteristics not affected by compression wave. These characteristics have the robust applicability for the surface wave investigation techniques. In this study, for the purpose of employing Love wave in the SASW method, the dispersion characteristics of the Love wave was extensively investigated by the theoretical and numerical approaches. The 3-D finite element and transfer matrix analyses for the half space and two-layer systems were performed to determine the phase velocities from Love wave as well as from both the vertical and the horizontal components of Rayleigh wave. Preliminary, numerical simulations and theoretical solutions indicated that the dispersion characteristics of horizontal surface wave(Love waves) can be sufficiently sensitive and appliable to SASW techniques.
The ship wave phenomena in the restricted waterway were investigated by a numerical analysis. The Euler and continuity equations were employed for the present study. The boundary fitted and moving grid system was adopted to enhance the computational efficiency. The convective terms in the governing equations and the kinematic free surface boundary condition were solved by the Constrained Interpolated Profile (CIP) algorithm in order to solve accurately wave heights in far field as well as near field. The advantage of the CIP method was verified by the comparison of the computed results by the CIP and the Maker and Cell (MAC) method. The free surface flow simulation around Wigley hull was performed and compared with the experiment for the sake of the validation of the numerical method. The present numerical scheme was applied to the free surface simulation for various canal sections in order to understand the effect of the sectional shape of waterways on the ship waves. The wave heights on the side wall and the shape of the wave patterns with their characteristics of flow are discussed.
A numerical method for a wave diffraction problem in three-dimensional channels is developed. The physical models are various shapes of channel connected to the open sea. When a ship or an offshore structure is moored in various configurations of channel connected to an open sea, the prediction of the hydrodynamic force exerting on the moored ship could be important for the prediction of its motion. It is assumed that the fluid is inviscid and incompressible and its motion is irrotational. From the continuity equation, the Laplace equation can be obtained as the governing equation. The surface tension at free surface is neglected, and wave amplitude is assumed to be small compared to the wave length. Then the free surface condition can be linearized. The numerical method used here is the localized finite element method based on a variational formulation
