Surface wave techniques are widely used as non-invasive method for geotechnical site characterization. Field surface wave data are collected and analyzed using different processing techniques to generate the dispersion curves, which are further used to extract the shear wave velocity profile by inverse problem solution. Characteristics of a dispersion curve depend on the subsurface layering information of a vertically heterogeneous medium. Sometimes soft layer can be found between two stiff layers in the vertically heterogeneous media, and it can affect the wave propagation dramatically. Now most of the surface wave techniques use the fundamental mode Rayleigh wave propagation during the inversion, but this may not be the actual scenario when a soft layer is present in a vertically layered medium. This paper presents a detailed and comprehensive study using finite element method to examine the effect of soft layers which sometimes get trapped between two high velocity layers. Determination of the presence of a soft layer is quite important for proper mechanical characterization of a soil deposit. Present analysis shows that the thickness and position of the trapped soft layer highly influence the dispersion of Rayleigh waves while the higher modes also contribute in the resulting wave propagation.

Recently, surface-wave methods have been widely used for site investigation due to economic advantage and improved reliability. Specially, the Spectral-Analysis-of-Surface-Wave (SASW) method has been used to evaluate soil properties in geotechnical engineering. In determination of subgrade stiffness by SASW measurements, only the vertical Rayleigh waves have been used. This study proposed a framework to determine shear-wave velocity profiles by using vertical and horizontal Rayleigh waves and Love wave all together. In addition, the Common-Array-Profiling(CAP) SASW method was employed, which subgrade stiffness of profile the local material under two fixed receivers. The procedure proposed in this study was verified by comparing the shear-wave velocity profiles with the shear-wave velocity profiles of downhole testing at two geotechnical sites.
The effect of field annealing on the velocity changes of magneto surface acoustic wave (MSAW) devices has been investigated for deposited $(Fe_{1-x}Co_x)_{89}Zr_{11}$ (x = 0~1.0) amorphous films. By means of two step field annealing at $195^{\circ}C$ for 10 minute in the magnetic field of 130 Oe, the MSAW device with x=0.4 film among the devices showed the superior velocity change of 0.1 %. This gigantic value was obtained in the DC bias field of 40 Oe at the exciting frequency of 8.7 MHz. It was confirmed that such behavior was due to the variation of differential permeability caused by an optimal stress within the magnetic film.
Borehole tests are commonly used as a tool to obtain the physical properties of soils and rocks. The results of borehole tests are, however, discontinuous. Interpolation methods are applied to interpret the data gap between the borehole test points. The interpolation is valid only if the horizontal variations of the ground between the test points are small enough to ignore. A surface wave inversion method was used to study the S wave velocity of the very soft soil to provide the continuous 2 dimensional S wave velocity structure. The resolution of the S wave velocity structure was used to interpret the inversion results.
In this study, we propose a joint inversion method, using genetic algorithms, to estimate an S-wave velocity structure for deep sedimentary layers from receiver functions and surface-wave phase velocity observed at several sites. The method takes layer continuity over a target area into consideration by assuming that each layer has uniform physical properties, especially an S-wave velocity, at all the sites in a target area in order to invert datasets acquired at different sites simultaneously. Numerical experiments with synthetic data indicate that the proposed method is effective in reducing uncertainty in deep structure parameters when modelling only surface-wave dispersion data over a limited period range. We then apply the method to receiver functions derived from earthquake records at one site and two datasets of Rayleigh-wave phase velocity obtained from microtremor array surveys performed in central Tokyo, Japan. The estimated subsurface structure is in good agreement with the results of previous seismic refraction surveys and deep borehole data. We also conclude that the proposed method can provide a more accurate and reliable model than individual inversions of either receiver function data only or surface-wave dispersion data only.

In general, a method for generating irregular wave by combination of component waves obtained from linear wave theory is widely used. In these method, however, mean water surface elevation is rising from time to time because of nonlinear effect of wave. In this study, for the rising problem of mean water surface elevation and stabilization of calculation from time to time, mass transport velocity for horizontal velocity at wave source position is considered. The rising problem of mean water surface elevation is checked by comparing calculated wave profile from numerical technique proposed in this study with target wave profile at wave source position in numerical wave tank by using CADMAS-SURF code. And, by generating irregular wave, the validity of wave overtopping rate estimated from this numerical analysis is discussed by comparing computed results with measured results in hydraulic model experiments for vertical seawall located on a sloping sea bottom. As a results, the computations are validated against the previously experimental results by hydraulic model test and numerical results of this study and a good agreement is observed. Therefore, numerical technique of this study is a powerful tool for estimating wave overtopping rate over the crest of coastal structure.
The evaluation of shear modulus (or shear wave velocity) profile of the site is very important in various fields of geotechnical engineering and various surface wave methods have applied to determine the shear wave velocity profiles and showed good performance. Surface wave methods evaluate the dispersion curve in the field and determine the shear wave velocity profile through the inversion process. In this paper, the automated inversion process using the genetic algorithm is developed for HWAW method which is one of surface wave methods recently developed. The proposed method uses the error function based on the wavelength domain dispersion curve and can determine the reliable shear wave velocity profile not only in shallow depth but also in deep depth. To estimate the validity of the proposed method, numerical simulations and field test were performed and the proposed method was applied to determine the shear wave velocity profiles. Through the numerical simulations and field applications, the promising potential of the proposed method was verified.

In this work, we discuss simulation of surface acoustic wave device using Comsol Multiphysics. The structure SAW device based on piezoelectric thin film aluminum-nitride (AlN) on silicon was simulated. Some parameters of SAW device such as surface velocity, displacement of piezoelectric thin film were evaluated by software. Many modes and shapes of wave are also discussed in this paper. For evaluation physical parameters of AlN piezoelectric layer, the SAW resonator was modeled and simulation results were also compared with experiment results. we simulated arid evaluated the surface Rayleigh wave of AlN thin film on silicon substrate. Results simulation and experiment showed the surface velocity of AlN thin film was about 5200 m/s and shape of surface wave was also displayed. This paper has also proposed as method to study SAW characteristic of piezoelectric thin film and found out measurement values accurately of film such as stiffness matrix, piezoelectric matrix. These values are very important in calculation and design SAW device or MEMS device based on AlN piezoelectric layer.

Numerical simulations have been carried out for a 138K LNG Carrier (KLNG) model ship with free surface, using WAVIS 2.0 and Fluent 6.3.26 with various $y^+$ values and different grid densities. Level-set method for free surface capturing was adopted in WAVIS, while VOF has been used in Fluent. The calculated results were compared with the experiment data. Resistance coefficient, wave pattern, wave profile along the hull surface, axial velocity contours and transverse vectors had been analyzed. When the first $y^+$ value was fixed at 60, the simulation results from both WAVIS and Fluent were improved as the number of grids increased. The convergence time of WAVIS was much shorter than that of Fluent. Furthermore, WAVIS predicted the velocity field and the wave profile along the hull surface better than Fluent. However, Fluent gave better wave patterns.

Based on the Green's function technique, an analytical approach is developed to examine the surface wave screening effectiveness of composite wave barriers. The composite barrier consists of a high velocity layer sandwiched between two thin layers of low shear velocity materials. The high velocity layer is represented by differential matrix operators which relate the wave fields on each side of the layer. The low velocity layers are modeled by non-rigid contact conditions which allow partial sliding at the interfaces. Screening ratio of barriers with various combination of material, geometric, and non-rigidness parameters are compared and discussed in some detail.
