A new procedure for the advanced one-side measurement of longitudinal wave and surface wave velocities in concrete is presented in this paper. Stress waves are generated in a consistent fashion with a DC solenoid. Two piezoelectric accelerometers are mounted on the surface of a specimen as receivers. Stress waves propagate along the surface of the specimen and are detected by the receivers. In order to reduce the large incoherent noise levels of the signals, signals are collected and manipulated by a computer program for each velocity measurement. For a known distance between the two receivers and using the measured flight times, the velocities of the longitudinal wave and the surface wave are measured. The velocities of the longitudinal wave determined by this method are compared with those measured by conventional methods on concrete, PMMA and steel.
A Digital Wave Tank simulation technique, based on a finite-difference method and a modified marker-and-cell (MAC) algorithm, is applied in order to investigate the characteristics of nonlinear Tsunami propagations and their interactions with a 2D sloping beach, Ohkushiri Island, and to predict maximum wove run-up around the island. The Navier-Stokes (NS) and continuity equation are governed in the computational domain, and the boundary values are updated at each time step, by a finite-difference time-marching scheme in the frame of the rectangular coordinate system. The fully nonlinear, kinematic, free-surface condition is satisfied by the modified marker-density function technique. The near shore Tsunami is assumed to be a solitary wave, and is generated from the numerical wave-maker in the developed Digital Wave Tank. The simulation results are compared with the experiments and other numerical methods, based on the shallow-water wave theory.

The spectral analysis of surface waves (SASW) method, which is an in-situ seismic technique, has mainly been developed and used for many years to determine the stiffness profile of layered media (such as asphalt concrete and layered soils) in an infinite half-space. This paper presents a modified experimental technique for nondestructive evaluation of in-place cement mortar compressive strength in single-layer concrete slabs of rather a finite thickness through a correlation to surface wave velocity. This correlation can be used in the quality control of early age cement mortar structures and in evaluating the integrity of structural members where the infinite half space condition is not met. In the proposed SASW field test, the surface of the structural members is subjected to an impact, using a 12 mm steel ball, to generate surface wave energy at various frequencies. Two accelerometer receivers detect the energy transmitted through the medium. By digitizing the analog receiver outputs, and recording the signals for spectral analysis, surface wave velocities can be identified. Modifications to the SASW method includes the reduction of boundary reflections as adopted on the surface waves before the point where the reflected compression waves reach the receivers. In this study, the correlation between the surface wave velocity and the compressive strength of cement mortar is developed using one 36"x36"x4"(91.44$\times$91.44$\times$91.44 cm) cement mortar slab of 2,000 psi (140 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$) and two 36"x36"x4"(91.44$\times$91.44$\times$91.44 cm) cement mortar slabs of 3,000 psi (210 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$).

As the necessity of the safety diagnosis of the concrete structure, more reliable ultrasonic technique to qualify the concrete is required. In this study, the artificial surface crack depth is measured using several types of the ultrasonic probes. As results, the horizontal shear wave probe is most useful to determine the crack depth compared to the other probes. For the surface wave probe, the ultrasonic wave path is changed with the surface crack depth.

Coil spring of automobile suspension system is very important to safety and dynamics of passenger car and requires a highly advanced quality control during manufacturing processes. Surface cracks on the coil spring rod produced by mechanical machining and heat treatment may cause a severe accident and large cost to the manufacturer. In order to detect surface cracks of the rod, guided wave technique is applied for a fast total volumetric inspection. Pochhammer equation is studied to investigate the dispersion characteristics of the guided wave in the spring rod and optimal wave modes sensitive to the surface crack are selected experimentally to design the experimental arrangement for the generation of guided wave. Rod samples with different size of artificial axial EDM notch on the surface ranging from 50${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ to 1 mm are examined by guided wave and inspection results discussed.

In general, a method for generating irregular wave by combination of component waves obtained from linear wave theory is widely used. In these method, however, mean water surface elevation is rising from time to time because of nonlinear effect of wave. In this study, for the rising problem of mean water surface elevation and stabilization of calculation from time to time, mass transport velocity for horizontal velocity at wave source position is considered. The rising problem of mean water surface elevation is checked by comparing calculated wave profile from numerical technique proposed in this study with target wave profile at wave source position in numerical wave tank by using CADMAS-SURF code. And, by generating irregular wave, the validity of wave overtopping rate estimated from this numerical analysis is discussed by comparing computed results with measured results in hydraulic model experiments for vertical seawall located on a sloping sea bottom. As a results, the computations are validated against the previously experimental results by hydraulic model test and numerical results of this study and a good agreement is observed. Therefore, numerical technique of this study is a powerful tool for estimating wave overtopping rate over the crest of coastal structure.

It is very important to evaluate the surface or subsurface microstructure because of their influences on mechanical properties of materials. Surface SH-wave which is horizontally polarized shear wave traveling along near surface and subsurface layer is an attractive technique for material evaluation. The destructive method is widely used for the estimation of material degradation but it has a great difficulty in preparing specimens from in-service industrial facilities. In this study, nondestructive evaluation for degraded structural materials used at high temperature though surface SH-wave method is discussed. 2.25Cr-1Mo steel specimens which were prepared by the isothermal aging heat treatment at $650^{\circ}$ were evaluated though ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation techniques investigating the change of sound velocity, attenuation coefficient and amplitude spectra. In addition, it has verified experimentally the frequency-dependence of attenuation coefficient though wavelet analysis method.

Propagation of elastic surface waves in anisotropic media is considered in this study. An analytical technique is proposed to study the scattering of surface waves at the interface between two anisotropic quarter-spaces. The Green's function technique is used to derive a system of equations which can determine the scattering coefficients at the interface. A numerical study is carried out and the trade-offs between the material anisotropy and inhomogeneity are studied.

The feasibility of an ultrasonic technique using a pulse-echo method of normal-incident compressional waves was evaluated for its sensitivity to the worn surface and near surface damage due to wear. Worn surfaces were generated at various oscillation frequency under a given load and amplitude and these surface were in situ monitored using a ultrasonic wave detection system. Analysis of the ultrasonic waves received from the worn surface revealed a close relationship between the surface and near-surface damage and the maximum echo-amplitude of the compressional waves. The ultrasonic technique was successful in assessing the level of severity of the worn surface in real time during the wear process. It is also shown that the wear depth can be easily measured by the calculation of change of the specimen thickness based on the wave speed measured for the specimen medium.
