  • The unsustainable human activities like increased use of automobiles, heavy industrialization and the use of large volumes of fertilizers, chemicals and pesticides in the agricultural land cause climate change problems in one way or another. Under normal circumstances, the heat radiations from the sun will be reflected back. An excessive volume of GHGs in the atmosphere would prevent these radiations from reflecting back. East Asia is facing severe climate change issues in recent times. A lot of climate change problems such as hurricanes and floods have been reported from this region in the last couple of decades. The study aimed at investigating the climate change in East Asia with changing Sea Surface Temperature (SST). The study adopted a quantitative research method with a case study research design where a deliberate focus was made on the East Asia Region. Secondary data was gathered and analyzed to yield both descriptive and inferential statistics. The study concluded that the impact of East Asia Climate variability was significant mainly for some extreme events. Also, the study concluded that there was a significant link between the change of the East Asia climate variability and that of the sea surface temperature. Further, the study concluded that a linear relationship existed between the sea surface temperature and the climate of East Asia. Hence, a linear regression was a significant predictor of the East Asia Climate (EAC) based on changing sea surface temperature. The model revealed that 37.4% of the variations in the climate change index were explained by the changes in the sea surface temperature. The climate was expected to change with a value of 49.48 for a unit change in the sea surface temperature.

  • In this study, surface temperature which was extracted from Landsat TM band 6 was compared and analyzed with the AWS(Automatic Weather System) observation data for studying urban heat environment properties with possibility of remote sensing data application. In order to verification of the distribution properties of urban surface temperature, correlation analysis between surface temperature and NDVI, the distribution properties of urban surface temperature by land use/cover patterns were carried out by GIS spatial analysis techniques. The results presented that the spatial distribution of urban surface temperature was very different depending on various land use/cover patterns of surrounding areas. Also there was the reverse linear relationship between surface temperature and NDVI. These results will be worked as one of the major factors for environmentally sustainable urban planning considering the characteristics of weather environments in the near future.

  • Silicone-coated fabric were treated by oxygen low temperature plasma to improve the adhesion. The surface of silicone-coated fabric was modified with gaseous plasma of several discharge power in the presence of oxygen gas at 1Torr pressure. Oxygen plasma treatment introduces oxygen-containing functional groups and micro-pittings on the silicone-coated fabric surface. The treated fabrics with oxygen low temperature plasma were measured by contact angle analyzer and XPS(X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), and interfacial adhesion was measured by T-peel test. The surface of fabric was investigated by SEM photographs. The chemical and physical modification of the surface wettabillity by plasma treatment can increase the adhesion.

  • Land surface hydrological conditions have been considered to play an important role in the global and regional climate variability. Especially, snow, soil moisture, surface temperature, vegetation and rain are the key parameters which should be observed in the global scale. In this paper, new algorithms for these land surface hydrological parameters have been developed by introducing frequency and polarization dependencies of these parameters in the microwave radiative-transfer equations. The algorithms were applied to the TRMM Microwave Radiometer. (TMI) and validated by using the ground data obtained in the Tibetan Plateau. The estimated snow, soil moisture, surface temperature, water content of vegetation and rain patterns corresponded reasonably to the observed ones.

  • Pre-foaming, one of the manufacturing way of foamed concrete, is influenced by foaming agent. When the foaming agent diluted with water, surface tension and viscosity are varied. Therefore, this study is reviewing the surface tension, viscosity and unit weight of foam by experimental factor such as foaming agent types(AES, AOS, VS FP) and foam agent dilution concentration (1, 3, 5%) and temperature of materials (5, 10, 20℃). As an expeimental result, the surface tension and viscosity slightly increased with increasing concentrations. Meanwhile, when increasing temperature, the viscosity has decreased. FP produce relatively stable foams only in case 3% or more, which produce unstable foams containing large amount of water content by decreasing only insignificant surface tension when diluted at concentration of 1%.

  • The gate mark in injection molded part is a kind of surface defects. The formation of gate mark has been investigated in this study. SEM photographs and surface roughness have been examined to study gate mark. The specimens were molded for various injection conditions, such as injection temperature, mold temperature, and injection speed. Gate diameter and mold surface condition were also molding variables. Gate marks were reduced as injection speed and mold temperature increased. Gate diameter and injection temperature did not affect the gate marks. No etching of mold surface showed no gate marks for any molding conditions.

  • We present the shape determination method of 3-D reinforcement corrosion based on observed temperature on concrete surface. The non-destructive testing for reinforcement corrosion in concrete using a heat image on concrete surface have been proposed by Oshita. The position of the reinforcement of corrosion or the cavity can be found using that method. However, the size of those defects can not be precisely measured based on the heat image. We therefore proposed the numerical determination system of the shape for the reinforcement corrosion using the observed temperature on the concrete surface. The adjoint variable method is introduced to formulate the shape determination problem, and the finite element method is employed to simulate the heat transfer problem. Some numerical experiments and the examination for the number of the observation points are shown in this paper.

  • This paper reported the results of mock-up test on mass concrete for transfer girder using setting time difference of super retarding agent(SRA). According to test results, two mock-up structures were made. Plain concrete without placing layer reached maximum temperature after 24hours since placement and caused surface hydration cracks at top section. However, concrete with placing layer reached maximum temperature after 72hours and surface temperature was higher than center temperature, which did not cause surface crack. After form removing, no crack was observed at side surface of plain concrete, while concrete using SRA at mid section had surface scaling and settling crack. According to coring results, concrete with placing layer had a penetration crack from top section to bottom section. Therefore, the setting time difference method to reduce hydration heat will have difficulty in applying the mass concrete for transfer girder.

  • It was reviewed that the kinds of lubricating oil, viscosity, temperature and strength of materials affected the wear of the surface heat treatment. When lubricants is used under severe running conditions, their tribological characteristics are very important. We have studied the lubricating oil viscosity, kinds of additives and their amounts, and lubricating oil temperatures were changed. In order to study the effect of oil temperature on the wear of the surface, the temperature of the oil was changed for the same sample. It was shown from the test results that wear is not greatly affected by the amount of ZnDTP (Zinc dialkyl dithio phosphate) antiwear agent, but EP (Extreme pressure) additives are less effective against wear than ZnDTP additives. The viscosity of lubricating oil and its temperature greatly affect the wear of the surface. Combining all the wear data with those of the surface strength, it was observed that the higher the load, the lower the scratch of wear, and also in the case of the same running load, the lower the wear, the longer the life of the surface strength.
