  • The present study aims to design a multiplayer microstrip antenna with composite sandwich construction and to estimate structural behavior of this multiplayer structure for the next generation of structural surface technology. This is termed Surface-Antenna-Structure indicating that structural surface becomes antenna. Constituent materials were selected considering electrical properties as well as mechanical properties. For the antenna performance, antenna elements inserted into structural layers were designed for satellite communication at a resonant frequency of 12.5 GHz and final demonstration article was $16\times16$ array antenna. From electrical measurements it was shown that antenna performances were in good agreement with design requirements. Structural analysis showed this antenna structure was well designed for the mechanical rigidity. All constituent materials were characterized independently. The SAS concept is the first serious attempt at integration for both antenna and composite engineers and promises innovative future communication technology.

  • In order to improve the quality of the sheared surface in cutting of inner structure bonded sheet metal the cut-off operation is mainly investigated, which is the typical shearing process in sheet metal forming technology. The sandwich sheet metals considered have inner structure which is constructed in the form of crimped expanded metal and woven metal. The inner structure is bonded between solid sheet by resistance welding or adhesive bonding. The shearing process is visualized by the computer vision system installed in front of the cut-off die and the sheared surface is measured and quantitatively compared with the help of the optical microscope after cut-off operation. From test results we found that the influence of sheared position can be observed and explained clearly and this result can be utilized to get the better sheared surface.

  • Variable structure control law is well known to be a robust control algorithm and evolution strategy is used as an effective search algorithm in optimization problems. In this paper, we propose a variable structure controller with time-varying switching surface. We calculate the maximum value of seitching surface gradient that is of the 3rd order polynomial form. Evolution strategy is used to optimize the parameters of the switching surface gradient. Finally, the proposed method is applied to position tracking control for BLDC motor. Experimental results show that the proposed method is more useful than the conventional variable structure controller.

  • We fabricated a Li-S battery with post-treated carbon nanotube (CNT) films which offered better support for sulfur, and investigated the effect of the surface properties and pore structure of the post-treated CNT films on Li-S battery performance. Post-treatments, i.e., acid treatment, unzip process and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) treatment, effectively modified the surface properties and pore structure of the CNT film. The modified pore structure impacted the ability of the CNT films to accommodate the catholyte, resulting in an increase in initial discharge capacity.

  • We will investigate the bonding configurations of phenylalanine and tyrosine adsorbed on the Ge(100) surface using CLPES and DFT calculations. First, the C 1s, N 1s, and O 1s spectra obtained at 300 K revealed that both the amine and carboxyl groups of phenylalanine and tyrosine concurrently participated in adsorption on the Ge(100) surface without bond breaking using CLPES, depending on the extent of coverage. In the second place, we confirmed that the "O-H dissociated-N dative bonded structure" is the most stable structure implying kinetically favorable structure, and the "O-H dissociation bonded structure" is another stable structure manifesting thermodynamically advantageous structure using DFT calculations. This tendency turns up both phenylalanine and tyrosine, similarly. Furthermore, through the CLPES data and DFT calculation data, we discovered that the "O-H dissociated-N dative bonded structure" and the "O-H dissociation bonded structure" are preferred at 0.30 ML and 0.60 ML, respectively. Moreover, we found that the phenyl ring of phenylalanine is located in axial position to Ge(100) surface, but the phenyl ring of tyrosine is located in parallel to Ge(100) surface using DFT calculations.

  • Domestic photovoltaic system for roof-top is installed towards the south at an angle of 20 to 35 degrees and the shape of PV array is divided into two kinds; a plane shape and a curved shape. This paper aims to understand an actual condition of PV facility and strengths and weaknesses of support structure production and installation and to consider the best PV surface shape by analyzing theoretical logics of these two surface shapes and architectural perspective-based realistic case studies. This study targeted 98 facilities including common houses, public institutions and education institutions. In common houses, all of 59 PV facilities have a plane surface. In public institutions, 7 of 15 PV facilities have a curved array surface and 8 PV facilities have a plane surface. In education institutions, also, 14 of 24 PV facilities have a plane array surface and 10 PV facilities have a curved surface. Most of 98 facilities have a flat roof supporting shape. However, it was found that the curved shape wasn't positive for PV generation due to the change of radial density and it was at least 10 % more expensive to produce its structure. Also, domestic general large single-plate PV facilities have problems of harmony with buildings and wind load. Therefore, it is considered that for fixed-type roof-top PV, a plane PV array shape is good for optimum generation and economic efficiency and a parallel array structure on the roof surface is favorable to wind load and snow load without being a hindrance to the building facade.

  • We investigated surface-roughness-dependent optical loss in a plasmonic cavity consisting of a semiconductor nanodisk/silver nanopan structure. Numerical simulations show that the quality factors of plasmonic resonant modes significantly depend on the surface roughness of the dielectric-metal interface in the cavity structure. In the transverse-magnetic-like whispering-gallery plasmonic mode excited in a structure with disk diameter of 1000 nm, the total quality factor decreased from 260 to 130 with increasing root-mean-square (rms) surface roughness from 0 to 5 nm. This quantitative theoretical study shows that the smooth metal surface plays a critical role in high-performance plasmonic devices.

  • The structure systems with non-rigid member were classified by the composition type of line and surface members. As a result of the classification, there are 1-way cable structure, cable net and radial cable net structure in the line member system. And there are pneumatic structure and suspension membrane structure in surface member system. In addition, when the line and surface members are composed together, there is the hybrid membrane system which are divided into hanging type and supported type. In this paper, the Korean terms of structure systems with non-rigid member are recommended through this classification.

  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to verify the causes of surface scaling at L-shoulder concrete structure. METHODS : From the literature reviews, mechanisms of frost damage were studied and material properties including strength, air void, spacing factor and scaling resistance of L-shoulder concrete structure were analyzed using core specimens taken by real fields. RESULTS : The spacing factor of air void has relatively high correlation of surface conditions : lower spacing factor at good surfacing condition and vice versa. If the compressive strength is high, even thought spacing factor does not reach the threshold value of reasonable durability, the surface scaling resistance shows higher value. Based on these test results, the compressive strength also provide positive effect on the surface scaling resistance. CONCLUSIONS : The main causes of surface scaling of L-shoulder could be summarized as unsuitable aid void amount and poor quality of air void structure. Secondly, although the compressive strength is not the governing factor of durability, but it shows the positive effect on the surface scaling resistance.
