  • The drift force acting on a floating OWC chamber in waves is studied taking account of fluctuating air pressure in the air chamber. A velocity potential in the water due to the free surface oscillating pressure patch is added to the conventional radiation-diffraction potential problem. The potential problem inside the chamber is formulated by making use of the Green integral equation associated with the Rankine Green function while the outer problem with the Kelvin Green function. The drift forces as well as the chamber motions are calculated taking account of the air pressure in the chamber.

  • The very rapid cooling problem from $820^{\circ}$C to $20^{\circ}$C on the surface of the steel by thermal conduction including the latent heat of phase transformation of steel and by transient boiling heat transfer of water are considered to principal problem in quenching. The transient boiling process of water at the surface of specimen during the quenching process were experimentally analyzed. Then the heat flux was numerically calculated by the numerical method of inverse heat condition problem. In this report, the simulation program to calculate the cooling curves for large rolls was made using the subcooled transient boiling curve as a boundary condition. By this simulation program, the cooling curves of rolls from D=50mm to D=200mm were calculated and the effects of agitation of circulation of water also investigated.

  • A principle of "orthogonalization" is proposed as an extended notion of hybrid (force and position) control for robot manipulators under geometric endpoint constraints. The principle realizes the hybrid control in a strict sense by letting position and velocity feedback signals be orthogonal in joint space to the contact force vector whose components are exerted at corresponding joints. This orthogonalization is executed via a projection matrix computed in real-time from a gradient of the equation of the surface in joint coordinates and hence both projected position and velocity feedback signals become perpendicular to the force vector that is normal to the surface at the contact point in joint space. To show the important role of the principle in control of robot manipulators, three basic problems are analyzed, the first is a hybrid trajectory tracking problem by means of a "modified hybrid computed torque method", the second is a model-based adaptive control problem for robot manipulators under geometric endpoint constraints, and the third is an iterative learning control problem. It is shown that the passivity of residual error dynamics of robots follows from the orthogonalization principle and it plays a crucial role in convergence properties of both positional and force error signals.force error signals.

  • In this paper, a versatile multi-objective optimization concept for fatigue life prediction is introduced. Multi-objective decision making in engineering design refers to obtaining a preferred optimal solution in the context of conflicting design objectives. Compromise decision support problems are used to model engineering decisions involving multiple trade-offs. These methods typically rely on a summation of weighted attributes to accomplish trade-offs among competing objectives. This paper gives an interpretation of the decision parameters as governing both the relative importance of the attributes and the degree of compensation between them. The approach utilizes a response surface model, the compromise decision support problem, which is a multi-objective formulation based on goal programming. Examples illustrate the concepts and demonstrate their applicability.

  • The surface properties of carbon microfibers (CMFs) are modified by chemical deposition of carbon nanofibers via the so-called ethylene processing. CMFs and the modified CMFs (MCMFs) are investigated as reinforcement additives to fabricate polyethylene (PE) composites with enhanced mechanical characteristics. The mechanical properties of the PE-MCMF composites are found to be better and favorable for applications under harsh climatic conditions such as those in Siberia. Improved adhesive interaction between MCMFs and PE is responsible for these enhanced mechanical properties.

  • This paper presents a optimization procedure by using Response Surface Methodology(RSM) to determine design Parameters for reducing cogging torque in BLDC motor of Electric Power Steering (EPS). RSM is achieved through using the experiment design method in combination with Finite Element Method and well adapted to make analytical model for a complex problem considering a lot of interaction of these parameters. Moreover, Sequential Quadratic Problem (SQP) method is used to solve the resulting of constrained nonlinear optimization problem.

  • The inverse heat conduction problem (IHCP) is a problem of estimating boundary condition from temperature measurement at one or more interior points. Neural networks are general information processing systems inspired by the connectionist theory of human brain. By properly training the network by the learning rule, the neural network method can handle many non-linear or other complex problems. In this work, neural network is applied to complicated inverse heat conduction problems. Efficiency of the procedure is enhanced by incorporating the radial basis functions (RBF). The RBF is trained faster than other neural network and can find smooth solution. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the current scheme, a typical one-dimensional IHCP is considered. At one surface, the temperature as well as the heat flux is known. The unknown temperature of interest is estimated on the other side of the slab. The results from the proposed method based on RBF neural network are compared with the conventional method.

  • This paper considers the problem of sequencing printed circuit boards(PCBs) on an automatic surface mount device(SMD) placement machine in order to minimize total setup time. Since the total set of component feeders needed by all boards cannot be loaded simultaneously on the magazine, the setup must be made between two successive boards in the sequence. It is assumed that the setup time depends on the number of component feeders to be replaced in the magazine. An important characteristic is that each feeder occupies a different number of slots in the magazine. This problem is equivalent to travelling salesman problem(TSP) except that the distances between two cities, that is, the setup times between two boards, are not known in advance. So, TSP-based heuristics with new distance functions are presented and their performances are compared through various test problems. Computational results indicate that our heuristics outperform existing methods.

  • In this study, a new sliding contact problem involving an elastomeric seal, a spherical particle and a hard coated steel counterface was modeled to investigate the detailed wear mechanisms related to the sealing surface. The model was also used to design the optimum coating conditions. A three-dimensional finite element contact problem was modeled and analyzed using the nonlinear finite element code, MARC. The deformed steel surface and stress distributions are presented for different coating layers and thicknesses. When the coating thickness is relatively small, the entrapped particle produces surface plastic deformations such as groove and torus. In addition, the sealing surface can be damaged by abrasive wear as well as fatigue wear. For a relatively thick and multi-layered coating, on the other hand, surface plastic deformation does not occur, and the amount of abrasive and fatigue wear is reduced. Therefore, the proposed contact model and results can be used in the design of various sealing systems, further intensive studies are required.

  • In wafer level molding progress, the thermal releasing failure phenomenon is shown up as the important problem. This phenomenon can cause the problem including the warpage, crack of the molded wafer. The thermal releasing failure is due to the insufficiency of adhesion strength degradation of the molding tape. To solve this problem, we studied experimental method increasing the release property of the molding tape through the plasma surface treatment on the wafer substrate. In this research, the vacuum plasma treatment system is used for release property improvement of the molding tape and controls the operating condition of the hydrophilic($O_2$, 100kW, 10min) and hydrophobic($C_2F_6$, 200kW, 10min). In order to perform the peeling test for measuring the releasing force precisely, we remodel the micro scale material property evaluation system developed by Korea institute of industrial technology. In case of hydrophilic surface treatment on the wafer substrate, we can figure out the releasing property of molding tape increase. In order to grasp the effect that it reaches to the release property increase when repeating the hydrophilic treatment, we make an experiment with twice treatment and get the result to increase about 12%. We find out the hydrophilic surface treatment method using plasma can improve releasing property of molding tape in the wafer level molding process.
