  • Oxidation behavior of hot-pressed silicon nitride ceramics with various sintering additives has been investigated. The weight gain of each specimens has shown in the range of 0.11 mg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ ~3.4 mg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at 140$0^{\circ}C$ for 192 h and eleven compositions have shown good oxidation resistance with the weight gain below 0.5 mg/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The oxidation rate has been shown to obey the parabolic rate law and the oxidized surface has consisted of $\alpha$-cristobalite and M2Si2O7 or MSiO3 (M=rare earth or transition metals) phase. The oxidation rate of each specimens has related to the eutectic temperature between additive oxide and SiO2, and ionic radius of additive oxides, respectively. From the above results, it could be concluded that the oxidation behavior of hot pressed silicon nitride is dominated by the high temperature properties of grain boundary glassy phase and the high temperature properties of grain boundary glassy phase are affected by the ionic radius of additive oxides.

  • In the case of boiling on high temperature wall, vapor film covers fully or parcially the surface. This phenomenon, film boiling or transition boiling, is very important in the surface heat treatment of metal, design of cryogenic heat exchanger and emergency cooling of nuclear reactor. Mainly supposed hydraulic-thermal accidents in nuclear reactor are LCCA (Loss of Coolant Accident) and PCM (Power-Cooling Mismatch). Recently, world-wide studies on reflooding of high temperature rod bundles after the occurrence of the above accidents focus attention on wall temperature history and required time in transient cooling process, wall superheat at rewet point, heat flux-wall superheat relationship beyond the transition boiling region, and two-phase flow state near the surface. It is considered that the further systematical study in this field will be in need in spite of the previous results in ref. (2), (3), (4). The paper is the study about the fast transient cooling process following the wall temperature excursion under the CHF (Critical Heat Flux) condition in a forced convective subcooled boiling system. The test section is a vertically arranged concentric annulus of 800 mm long and 10 mm hydraulic diameter. The inner tube, SUS 304 of 400 mm long, 8 mm I.D, and 7 mm O.D., is heated uniformly by the low voltage AC power. The wall temperature measurements were performed at the axial distance from the inlet of the heating tube, z=390 mm. 6 chromel- alumel thermocouples of 76 .mu.m were press fitted to the inner surface of the heating tube periphery. To investigate the heat transfer characteristics during the fast transient cooling process, the outer surface (fluid side) temperature and the surface heat flux are computed from the measured inner surface temperature history by means of a numerical method for inverse problems of transient heat conduction. Present cooling (boiling) curve is sufficiently compared with the previous results.

  • The phase change memory material is an active element in phase change memory and exhibits reversible phase transition behavior by thermal energy input. The doping of the phase change memory material with Ga leads to the increase of its crystallization temperature and the improvement of its amorphous stability. In this study, we investigated the effect of GaGe sputtering power on the formation of the phase change memory material including Ga. The deposition rate linearly increased to a maximum of 127 nm and the surface roughness remained uniform as the GaGe sputtering power increased in the range from 0 to 75 W. The Ga concentration in the thin film material abruptly increased at the critical sputtering power of 60 W. This influence of GaGe sputtering power was confirmed to result from a combined sputtering-evaporation process of Ga occurring due to the low melting point of Ga ($29.77^{\circ}C$).

  • The self-assembled strain-induced sub-micrometric islands and nanostructures are grown from In-As-Sb-P quaternary liquid phase on InAs (100) substrates in Stranski-Krastanow growth mode. Two samples are under consideration. The first sample consists of unencapsulated islands and lens-shape quantum dots (QDs) grown from expressly inhomogeneous liquid phase. The second sample is an n-InAs/p-InAsSbP heterostructure with QDs embedded in the p-n junction interface. The morphology, size and shape of the structures are investigated by high-resolution scanning electron (SEM) and transmission electron (TEM) microscopy. It is shown that islands, as they decrease in size, undergo shape transitions. Particularly, as the volume decreases, the following succession of shape transitions are detected: sub-micrometric truncated pyramid, {111} facetted pyramid, {111} and partially {105} facetted pyramid, completely unfacetted "pre-pyramid", hemisphere, lens-shaped QD, which then evolves again to nano-pyramid. A critical size of $5{\pm}2nm$ for the shape transformation of InAsSbP-based lens-shaped QD to nano-pyramid is experimentally measured and theoretically evaluated.

  • The NiSO4 supported on Fe2O3 catalysts were prepared by the impregnation method. No diffraction line of nickel sulfate was observed up to 30 wt %, indicating good dispersion of nickel sulfate on the surface of Fe2O3. The addition of nickel sulfate to Fe2O3 shifted the phase transition of Fe2O3 (from amorphous to hematite) to higher temperatures because of the interaction between nickel sulfate and Fe2O3. 20-NiSO4/Fe2O3 containing 20 wt % of NiSO4 and calcined at 500 oC exhibited a maximum catalytic activity for ethylene dimerization. The initial product of ethylene dimerization was found to be 1-butene and the initially produced 1-butene was also isomerized to 2-butene during the reaction. The catalytic activities were correlated with the acidity of catalysts measured by the ammonia chemisorption method.

  • SiAlON glasses are silicates or alumino-silicates, containing Mg, Ca, Y or rare earth (RE) ions as modifiers, in which nitrogen atoms substitute for oxygen atoms in the glass network. These glasses are found as intergranular films and at triple point junctions in silicon nitride ceramics and these grain boundary phases affect their fracture behaviour. This paper provides an overview of the preparation of M-SiAlON glasses and outlines the effects of composition on properties. As nitrogen substitutes for oxygen in SiAlON glasses, increases are observed in glass transition temperatures, viscosities, elastic moduli and microhardness. These property changes are compared with known effects of grain boundary glass chemistry in silicon nitride ceramics. Oxide sintering additives provide conditions for liquid phase sintering, reacting with surface silica on the $Si_3N_4$ particles and some of the nitride to form SiAlON liquid phases which on cooling remain as intergranular glasses. Thermal expansion mismatch between the grain boundary glass and the silicon nitride causes residual stresses in the material which can be determined from bulk SiAlON glass properties. The tensile residual stresses in the glass phase increase with increasing Y:Al ratio and this correlates with increasing fracture toughness as a result of easier debonding at the glass/${\beta}-Si_3N_4$ interface.

  • This work examines the dynamic properties of ice surfaces in vacuum for the temperature range of 140~180 K, which extends over the onset temperatures for ice sublimation and the phase transition from amorphous to crystallization ice. In particular, the study focuses on the transport processes of excess protons and chloride ions in ice and their segregative behavior to the ice surface. These phenomena were studied by conducting experiments with a relatively thick (~100 BL) ice film constructed with a bottom $H_2O$ layer and an upper $D_2O$ layer, with excess hydronium and chloride ions trapped at the $H_2O$/$D_2O$ interface as they were generated by the ionization of hydrogen chloride. The migration of protons, chloride ions, and water molecules to the ice film surface and their H/D exchange reactions were measured as a function of temperature using the methods of low energy sputtering (LES) and Cs+ reactive ion scattering (RIS). Temperature programmed desorption (TPD) experiments monitored the desorption of water and hydrogen chloride from the surface. Our observations indicated that both hydronium and chloride ions migrated from the interfacial layer to segregate to the surface at high temperature. Hydrogen chloride gas desorbs via recombination reaction of hydronium and chloride ions floating on the surface. Surface segregation of these species is driven by thermodynamic potential gradient present near the ice surface, whereas in the bulk, their transport is facilitated by thermal diffusion process. The finding suggests that chlorine activation reactions of hydrogen chloride for polar stratospheric ice particles occur at the surface of ice within a depth of at most a few molecular layers, rather than in the bulk phase.

  • Starting from the Debye theory of rotational Brownian motion equation, we derive an expression for explaining the generation of Maxwell displacement current (MDC) across single monolayers on a material surface. The orientational order parameter and the dielectric relaxation the of monolayers are derived. Based on fille analyses developed here, we examine the MDC across phospholipid monolayers with thermal stimulation due to the change in the spontaneous polarization, and the generation of MDC from 4-cyano-4\`-5-alkayl-biphenyl(5CB) Langmuir-film at the onset of transition by monolayer compression

  • A magnetic film was deposited on a slide glass substrate from aqueous solutions of $FeCl_2$ and $NaNO_2$ at 363 K. XRD analysis showed that the film was polycrystalline magnetite $(Fe_{3(1-{\sigma})}O_4)$ without impurity phase. The lattice constant was 0.8390 nm. Mossbauer spectrum of the film could be deconvoluted by the following parameters: isomer shifts for tetrahedral $(T_d)$ and octahedral $(O_h)$ sites are 0.28 and 0.68 mm/s, respectively, and corresponding magnetic hyperfine fields are 490 and 458 kOe, respectively. The estimated chemical formula of the film by the peak intensity of Mossbauer spectrum was $Fe_{2.95}O_4$. Low temperature transition of the magnetite (Verwey transition) was not detected in resistivity measurement of the film. Properties of the film were discussed with those of pressed pellet and single crystal of synthetic magnetites. On the surface of the film, magnetite particles of about 0.2 μm in diameter were identified by noncontact atomic force microscopy (NAFM) and magnetic force microscopy (MFM).
