Traditional approaches to surface moisture problems in the context of aeolian research have focused on the initiation of sand movement, developing various models for predicting threshold velocity on a wet surface. They have been unsatisfactory, however, in explaining field observations because they have not incorporated spatiotemporal variability of surface moisture, the interactions between transported sand grains and surface, and the role of aeolian transport in controlling surface moisture. As Nield (2011) showed, a simplified numerical model can be used to investigate this issue. This research aims to explore the feedback structures between aeolian transport and surface moisture using a modified sand slab model. Key modifications are the introduction of simultaneous updating scheme for all the slabs and moisture-assigning procedures with and without aeolian transport. The major findings are as follows. Moist surface conditions suppress sand slab movement, leading to the development of smaller-scale topography. Available sands for aeolian transport are determined by the vertical patterns of moisture content with its variations from groundwater to the surface. Sand patches on a wet surface act as a localized source area. Sand movement drives immediate changes in surface moisture rather than time-lag reponses, mostly when moist conditions are dominant.
Average moisture content of 30mm-thick Korean red pine(Pinus densiflora) was estimated nondestructively and continuously using surface temperature rise by radiation heating and moisture gradient profile in wood. The surface temperature rises increased as surface moisture contents decreased and good relationships were found between surface moisture contents and surface temperature rises at three different feed speeds of 10, 20 and 30 m/min. Average moisture content could be described as a function of surface moisture content and wood thickness.

This paper presents soil moisture retrieval from measured polarimetric backscattering coefficients of a vegetated surface. Based on the analysis of the quite complicate first-order radiative transfer scattering model for vegetated surfaces, a simplified scattering model is proposed for an inversion algorithm. Extraction of the surface-scatter component from the total scattering of a vegetation canopy is addressed using the simplified model, and also using the three-component decomposition technique. The backscattering coefficients are measured with a polarimetric L-band scatterometer during two months. At the same time, the biomasses, leaf moisture contents, and soil moisture contents are also measured. Then the measurement data are used to estimate the model parameters for vv-, hh-, and vh-polarizations. The scattering model for tall-grass-covered surfaces is inverted to retrieve the soil moisture content from the measurements using a genetic algorithm. The retrieved soil moisture contents agree quite well with the in-situ measured soil moisture data.
As important factors determining human sensorial comfort, liquid moisture management and surface properties of heat resistant workwear materials were examined. To figure out liquid moisture management properties of the test materials, absorption capacity, rate of absorption, and evaporation properties were assessed. A modified GATS(Gravimetric Absorbency Testing System) was used to measure the liquid moisture accumulation associated with the wicking of liquid moisture from sweating skin. The GATS procedure measures demand wettability of materials to take up liquid in a direction perpendicular to the fabric surface and it was modified to incorporate a special test cell and cover to assess absorption behavior in the presence of evaporation. Fabric stiffness, smoothness, number and the length of surface fibers, and an estimate of the contact area between the skin and fabric surface were measured to characterize the mechanical and surface properties of the test materials. Also an estimate of the force with which a fabric clings to moist skin was made using as wet-cling index.
Diatomite, bentonite and zeolite were used as porous materials for fabricating hygroscopic panels. Moisture adsorption and desorption of porous materials were investigated and hydrothermal method was applied to fabricate panels. Cheolwon diatomite and Pohang zeolite showed excellent characteristics of moisture adsorption and desorption. These characteristics were caused by higher surface area and pore volume of porous materials. Correlation coefficient between surface area and moisture adsorption content of porous materials was 0.93. Moisture adsorption contents were influenced by surface area and pore volume of panels, and surface area more effected on moisture adsorption. Correlation coefficient between surface area and moisture adsorption content of panels was 0.86. Moisture adsorption content of panel with 10% Pohang zeolite was $180\;g/m^2$ and that of 10% Cheolwon diatomite was $170\;g/m^2$. Moisture desorption content of panel with 10% Pohang zeolite was $105\;g/m^2$. Moisture adsorption contents of panel with porous materials were higher than that of panel without porous materials.
This paper presents radar remote sensing of soil moisture and surface roughness for vegetated surfaces. A precise volume scattering model for a vegetated surface is derived based on the first-order radiative transfer technique. At first, the scattering mechanisms of the scattering model are analyzed for various conditions of the vegetation canopies. Then, the scattering model is simplified step by step for developing an appropriate inversion algorithm. For verifying the scattering model and the inversion algorithm, the polarimetric backscattering coefficients at 1.85 GHz, as well as the ground truth data, of a tall-grass field are measured for various soil moisture conditions. The genetic algorithm is employed in the inversion algorithm for retrieving soil moisture and surface roughness from the radar measurements. It is found that the scattering model agrees quite well with the measurements. It is also found that the retrieved soil moisture and surface roughness parameters agree well with the field-measured ground truth data.
This study was conducted to analyse the relation between physical characteristics of soil surface and wild plants occurrence. Lots of natural occurrence on loamy soil and a little of natural occurrence on perlite. Those were used to observe the wild plants occurrence through the duration. Natural occurrence of wild plants were observed on uniform sand, perlite, loamy soil and 2cms loamy soil layer above the perlite. Uniform sand was compared with different height of drain ditch. The results of analysis were as followed. 1. Wild plants germinated on the uniform perlite layer, they did not grow larger. Because water in large pores of perlite surface drained rapidly and evaporated easily, therefore surface remained low moisture contents. 2. A lot of weed grew on 2cms loamy layer on perlite which stratified above the perlite layer. Because perlite had plenty of soil moisture and soil moisture moved easily from perlite to loamy soil layer. 3. Uniform loamy soil had similar occurrence on the uniform perlite. It was nearly same at surface moisture distribution but lower than layered loamy soil on perlite, and the vertical distributions at soil moisture was totally lower than 2cms loamy soil layer on perlite. 4. Wild plants were grew on uniform sand on different height of drain ditch. In this case, much more wild plants were grew on which had more higher drainage ditch. The number of wild plants occurred when it was affected by soil surface moisture, drain ditch and natural occurrence of wild plants. This could be controlled by layered soil at surface moisture. Therefore weed occurrence can control in planting ground, where soil layer would not be disturbed.
In this study, we analyzed the impacts of land surface characteristics on spatially and temporally distributed soil moisture values at the Yongdam and Soyang-river dam watersheds in 2014 and 2015. The soil moisture, NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) and temperature values at the spatio-temporal scales were estimated using satellite-based MODIS (MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) products. Then the Pearson correlations between soil moisture and land surface characteristics (NDVI, temperature and DEM-digital elevation model) were estimated and analyzed, respectively. Overall, the monthly soil moisture values at the time step were highly influenced by the precipitation amounts. Also, the results showed that the soil moisture has the strong correlation with DEM while the temperature was inversely correlated with the soil moisture. However the monthly correlations between NDVI and soil moisture were highly varied along the time step. These findings indicated that water loss near the land surface are highly occurred by soil and plant activities as evapotranspiration and infiltration during the no/less precipitation period. But the high precipitation amounts reduce the impacts of land surface characteristics because of saturated condition of land surface. Thus these results demonstrated that soil moisture values are highly correlated with land surface characteristics. Our findings can be useful for water resources/environmental management, agricultural drought, etc.

Soil moisture is an essential satellite-driven variable for understanding hydrologic, pedologic and geomorphic processes. The European Space Agency (ESA) has endorsed soil moisture as one of Climate Change Initiates (CCI) and had merged multi-satellites over 30 years. The $0.25^{\circ}$ coarse resolution soil moisture satellite data showed correlations with variables of a water stress index, Temperature-Vegetation Dryness Index (TVDI), from a stepwise regression analysis. The ancillary data from TVDI, Land Surface Temperature (LST) and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) from MODIS were inputted to a multi-regression analysis for estimating the surface soil moisture. The estimated soil moisture was validated with in-situ soil moisture data from April, 2012 to March, 2013 at Andong observation sites in South Korea. The soil moisture estimated using satellite-based LST and NDVI showed a good agreement with the observed ground data that this approach is plausible to define spatial distribution of surface soil moisture.
Active clays, Diatomite, bentonite and zeolite were used as porous materials for fabricating hygroscopic gypsum boards. Pohang active clay and Cheolwon diatomite showed excellent characteristics of moisture adsorption and desorption. These characteristics were caused by higher surface area and pore volume of porous materials. Moisture adsorption content of gypsum board with 10% active clay(P1) was 62.0 g/m$^2$, and moisture desorption content was 50.2 g/m$^2$. Moisture adsorption content of gypsum board with 10% diatomite(P) was 59.5 g/m$^2$, and moisture desorption content was 49.0 g/m$^2$. Moisture adsorption contents of gypsum boards with porous materials were higher than that moisture desorption contents of gypsum board without porous materials. Correlation coefficient between surface area and moisture adsorption content of gypsum boards was 0.98. Also, correlation coefficient between surface area and moisture desorption content of gypsum boards was 0.97. Moisture adsorption and desorption contents were influenced by surface area and pore volume of the gypsum boards, and surface area had a larger effect on moisture adsorption and desorption.
