  • Nanocomposites of blends of polyethyleneterephthalate (PET) and polyamide66 (Nylon66) containing natural and organically modified montmorillonite clays (PM, $Cloisite^{(R)}$ 25A and 15A) were prepared by melt mixing. DSC results showed that the addition of clay changed the crystallization behavior of PET/Nylon66 nanocomposites. Clay C25A was observed to most significantly change the crystallization temperature than other clays in blends of PET and Nylon66, which may be caused by the difference in interaction with matrix polymers. AFM results also showed that the lowest value of surface roughness was observed for nanocomposites containing C25A indicating the smooth and relatively homogenous surface. Mechanical properties measurement showed the similar results. Contact angle was measured to study the difference in hydrophobicity. An increase in contact angle was observed for nanocomposites with C25A or C15A due to the increased hydrophobicity.

  • We describe that an elastomeric stamp of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) can modify the surface energy of some surfaces when brought into conformal contact with the number of stamping. We focus on an increase of the hydrophobicity of the patterned surface due to diffusion of low molecular weight (LMW) silicone polymer chains. The transfer of PDMS to the surface during patterning is relevant to and calls for attention by those who are using this method in applications where control of the surface chemistry is of importance for the application.

  • Two different nanofluids were prepared by dispersing $Al_{2}O_3$ nanoparticles in transformer oil after hydrophobic surface modification. The agglomerated alumina nanoparticles with diameters from ${\mu}m$ to mm were ball-milled and then treated with surfactants such as lauric acid, stearic acid and oleic acid. The surface characteristics of modified nanoparticles were examined by FTIR spectroscopy. It showed that the hydrophobicity of nanoparticles was caused by esterification between hydroxyl groups on the particle surface and functional groups of surfactant. The shape and size distribution of ball-milled particles were analyzed by TEM and PSA. The results compared with the primary particles indicated that the size distributions of nanoparticles were dependant on milling times. The dispersion stability of modified nanoparticles dispersed in oil was highly dependent on the composition and amounts of surfactants.

  • We attempted to fabricate polyurethane derivatives (PU-CN, PU-DCM) LB films by using LB method. Also, we investigated the monolayer behavior at the air-water interface by surface pressure-area ($\pi$-A) isotherms. And, the surface morphologies and the physicochemical properties of LB films were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and UV-vis spectroscopy, respectively. Also, the electrical properties of polyurethane derivatives LB films were investigated by using the conductivity and the dielectric constant. In the AFM images, we conclude that surface morphology of PU-DCM LB films is smooth and homogeneous and has optimal hydrophobicity and good stability, whereas PU-CN LB films give rougher surfaces with more excess material. In the I-V characteristics, the conductivity is different as to the polyurethane derivatives, it is considered that this phenomena could be described by the difference of lumophore pendant which was adhered at PU main chain.

  • The main objective of this study is to characterize and evaluate the hydrophobic performance of polymer-based water-repellent coatings on cementitious mortar surfaces. Different concentrations of poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) and poly(1,4-butylene adipate) (PBA) were prepared in the laboratory and their applicability and performance was tested experimentally by water absorption test and analysis of surface contact angles of cementitious mortar specimens. According to the results of this study, it can be stated that incorporation of nano polymer particles on the surface of cementitious mortar specimens can enhance contact angles and reduce water absorption by increasing hydrophobicity. However, a dosage limit exists for polymer materials in coating, and observed hydrophobic improvements decreases when polymer dosage reached beyond the limit. Additionally, it is observed that water absorption of polymer coated cementitious mortars is closely related with the results of surface contact angle.

  • Although studies on probiotics have been performed mostly with viable microbes, the beneficial functions of dead or heat-killed form of probiotic strains have also been examined. In this study, live and heat-killed forms of Lactobacillus acidophilus CBT LA1 were investigated in vitro and in vivo to evaluate the properties necessary for gut barrier protection. Cell surface hydrophobicity (CSH), autoaggregation (AA), cell adhesion, and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-binding properties were evaluated. In addition, the suppressive effect on LPS-induced interleukin (IL)-8 expression was investigated in HT-29 cells. To identify optimal conditions for CBT LA1 to adhere to HT-29 cells, CBT LA1 cells were heat-treated at 80, 85, 90, 95, 100, or $121^{\circ}C$ for 10 min; cells treated at $80^{\circ}C$ for 10 min showed the highest adhesion. Heat-killed bacteria at $80^{\circ}C$ showed higher levels of LPS-binding, CSH, AA, adhesion to HT-29, and suppression of IL-8 expression than did live CBT LA1. In vivo imaging was performed to evaluate the ability of live or heat-killed CBT LA1 to remove LPS from the intestine in a rat model of infection. At 16 h after infection, fluorescence from FITC-conjugated LPS had mostly disappeared from the intestine of the rats administered with live or heat-killed CBT LA1; the effect was greater with heat-killed CBT LA1 at $80^{\circ}C$. These results suggest that heat-killed CBT LA1 as well as its live form can be applied as a pharmabiotic for protection of the gut barrier.

  • In this study, 69 lactobacilli isolated from Tibetan Qula, a raw yak milk cheese, were screened for their potential use as probiotics. The isolates were tested in terms of: Their ability to survive at pH 2.0, pH 3.0, and in the presence of 0.3% bile salts; tolerance of simulated gastric and intestinal juices; antimicrobial activity; sensitivity against 11 specific antibiotics; and their cell surface hydrophobicity. The results show that out of the 69 strains, 29 strains (42%) had survival rates above 90% after 2 h of incubation at pH values of 2.0 or 3.0. Of these 29 strains, 21 strains showed a tolerance for 0.3% bile salt. Incubation of these 21 isolates in simulated gastrointestinal fluid for 3 h revealed survival rates above 90%; the survival rate for 20 of these isolates remained above 90% after 4 h of incubation in simulated intestinal fluid. The viable counts of bacteria after incubation in simulated gastric fluid for 3 h and simulated intestinal fluid for 4 h were both significantly different compared with the counts at 0 h (p<0.001). Further screening performed on the above 20 isolates indicated that all 20 lactobacilli strains exhibited inhibitory activity against Micrococcus luteus ATCC 4698, Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633, Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 19115, and Salmonella enterica ATCC 43971. Moreover, all of the strains were resistant to vancomycin and streptomycin. Of the 20 strains, three were resistant to all 11 elected antibiotics (ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, tetracycline, penicillin G, ampicillin, streptomycin, polymyxin B, vancomycin, chloramphenicol, rifampicin, and gentamicin) in this study, and five were sensitive to more than half of the antibiotics. Additionally, the cell surface hydrophobicity of seven of the 20 lactobacilli strains was above 70%, including strains Lactobacillus casei 1,133 (92%), Lactobacillus plantarum 1086-1 (82%), Lactobacillus casei 1089 (81%), Lactobacillus casei 1138 (79%), Lactobacillus buchneri 1059 (78%), Lactobacillus plantarum 1141 (75%), and Lactobacillus plantarum 1197 (71%). Together, these results suggest that these seven strains are good probiotic candidates, and that tolerance against bile acid, simulated gastric and intestinal juices, antimicrobial activity, antibiotic resistance, and cell surface hydrophobicity could be adopted for preliminary screening of potentially probiotic lactobacilli.

  • Super-hydrophobic surface, with a water contact angle greater than $150^{\circ}$, has a self cleaning effect termed 'lotus effect'. We introduced super-hydrophobicity onto aramid/rayon mixture fabric with dual-scale structure by assembling silica nano-sol. Mixture fabric was treated with silica nano-sol, fluoric polymer using various parameters such as particle size, concentration. Silica nano-sol size were measured using particle size analyzer. Morphological changes by particle size were observed using field emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM), contact angle measurement equipment. The contact angle of water was about $134.0^{\circ}$, $137.0^{\circ}$, $143.0^{\circ}$, $139.5^{\circ}$ and $139.0^{\circ}$ for mixture fabric coated with 100.2nm, 313.7nm, 558.2nm, 628.5nm and 965.4nm silica nano-sol, compared with about $120.0^{\circ}$ for mixture fabric coated with fluoric polymer. When we mixed particle sizes of 100.2nm and 558.2nm by 7:3 volume ratio, the contact angle of water was about $146.2^{\circ}$. And we mixed particle sizes of 313.7nm and 558.2nm by 7:3 volume ratio, the contact angle of water was about $141.8^{\circ}$. Also we mixed particle sizes of 558.2nm and 965.4nm by 7:3 volume ratio, the best super-hydrophobicity was obtained. In this paper, we fabricated the water-repellent surfaces with various surface structures by using four types of silica nano-sol, and we found that the dual-scale structure was very important for the super-hydrophobicity.

  • Forty species of lactic acid bacteria isolated from gajami sikhae were identified as Lactobacillus plantarum, Leuconostoc mesenteroides, Lactobacillus brevis, and Weissella paramesenteroides. 10 of the 40 strains were selected and used for the test. In this study, experiments such as those using acid and artificial gastric juice resistance, bile acid resistance, autoaggregation, coaggregation, and cell surface hydrophobicity were conducted to utilize lactic acid bacteria separated from gajami sikhae as probiotics. The separated lactic acid strains showed high survival rates through displaying resistance to acidic and artificial gastric juices; L. plantarum GS11 showed the best resistance. Also, as a result of a measurement of bile acid resistance, all lactic acid bacteria stocks showed survival of more than 100% with a probiotic number of 108 to 109 log CFU/ml. After evaluating cohesion to indirectly measure cell surface adhesion, autoaggregation ability was shown to be more than 46%. Measurement of xylene adhesion for cell surface hydrophobicity evaluation revealed better cell adhesion than B. subtilis, which has 32.2% hydrophobicity in isolated lactic acid strains. Antibacterial force measurement found antibacterial activity in lactic acid bacteria, excluding L. plantarum GS12 and L. plantarum GS13. Therefore, it was judged that lactic acid bacteria separated from gajami sikhae could be used as probiotics with various probiotic properties.

  • The adsorption of soot particles onto a sensor surface of the engine soot detector posses a critical problem in the measurement. In order to prevent the optical rod surface from soot contamination, various functional coatings and flow-induced cleaning were applied to the surface in this work. For surface coatings, various materials of self-assembled monolayers (SAM) such as OTS (octadecyltrichlorosilane), PFDTES (perfluorodecyl-triethoxysilane) and PFDTMS (perfluorodecyltrimethoxysilane) were coated on the optical rod surface ,which have different characteristics in both hydrophobicity and oleophobicity. These coatings were tested with soot content varying from $0\%\;to\;3wt\%$ and oil temperature from 20 to $70^{\circ}C$. Test results showed that surface coatings were not effective for preventing the adsorption of soot panicles on the surface of optical rod. It was thought that these coatings provided the surface with additional attractive surface forces. However, it was found that adsorption of soot particles onto a sensor surface was minimized by flow-induced cleaning. This effect was tested with varying the flow velocity.
