  • The gasoline engine tends to high performance, fuel economy, small-sized. Therefore, it is necessary to solve the problems on thermal load, abnormal combustion, etc, in the engine, Thine film instantaneous temperature measurement probe was made. And the manufactural method of probe was established. The instantaneous surface temperatures in the constant volume combustion chamber were measured by this probe and the heat flux was obtained by Fourier analysis. The authors measured the wall temperature of combustion chamber and computed the heat flux through the cylinder wall in order to understand the combustion characteristics depending on height of probe. For achieving this goal, the thin film instantaneous temperature probe was developed for analyzing the instantaneous surface wall temperature and unsteady heat flux on the constant volume combustion chamber.

  • The stabilization of propane/air lean premixed flames by a heated cylindrical rod is investigated experimentally. The flame stability limits, heat flux, surface temperatures, equivalence ratios, and mixture velocities are measured in order to understand the role of heat flux or surface temperature on the flame stabilization of lean premixed flames. The flame stability limits are lowered by a heated cylindrical rod and extended even below the flammability limit of propane/air mixture when sufficient heat flux is provided. The flame stability limit decreases with the increase of heat flux or surface temperature and decreases with the higher mixture velocity. The diameter of cylindrical rod, however, dose not significantly affect the flame stability limit. The laminar flame speed has been measured for ultra lean propane/air premixed flames. The flame stabilization by a heated cylindrical rod provides the useful tool for the measurement of flame speed under very fuel-lean conditions.

  • Evaportranspiration is an important factor in hydrology cycle. Traditionally, it is measured by using basin or empirical formula with meteorology data, while it does not represent the evaportranspiration over a regional area. With the advent of improved remote sensing technology, it becomes a surface parameter of research interest in the field of remote sensing. Airborne and satellite imagery are utilized in this study. The high resolution airborne images include visible, near infrared, and thermal infrared bands and the satellite images are acquired by MODIS. Surface heat fluxes such as latent heat flux and sensible heat flux are estimate by using airborne and satellite images with surface meteorological measurements. We develop a new method to estimate the evaportranspiration over the rice paddy. The surface heat fluxes are initialized with a surface energy balance concept and iterated for convergent solution with atmospheric correct functions associated with aerodynamic resistance of heat transport. Furthermore, we redistribute the total net energy into sensible heat and latent heat fluxes. The result reveals that radiation and evaporation controlled extremes can be properly decided with both airborne and satellite images. The correlation coefficient of latent heat flux and sensible heat flux with corresponding in situ observations are 0.66 and 0.76, respectively. The relative root mean squared errors (RMSEs) for latent heat flux and sensible heat flux are 97.81 $(W/m^2)$ and 124.33 $(W/m^2)$, respectively. It is also shown that the newly developed retrieval scheme performs well when it is tested by using MODIS date.

  • A basic pulse tube refrigerator has been constructed with extensive instrumentation to study the characteristics of the heat exchanger experimentally under the oscillating pressure and the oscillating flow. This paper describes the sequential experiments with the basic pulse tube refrigerator. The experiments were performed for various cycle frequencies under the square pressure wave forms. First, the heat flux was measured through the cycle at the both cold and warm end heat exchangers without the regenerator. In order to enhance the thermal communication capability of the heat exchanger with the gas at low operating frequencies, a unique design of the triangular shape radial fin concept was applied to the heat exchangers. For the fin heat exchanger, the measured heat flux and the calculated heat flux from the two well-known oscillating heat transfer correlations were compared and discussed. Second, the regenerator was added to the pulse tube to make a basic pulse tube refrigerator configuration. The experiment showed the great impact of the regenerator on the temperature and the heat flux profiles. At the warm-end, the cyclic averaged heat flux had its maximum value at the specific operating frequency. The paper presents the explanation of the surface heat pumping effect as well as the experimental data.

  • In this work, nucleate pool boiling heat transfer coefficients(HTCs) of 5 refrigerants of different vapor pressure are measured on horizontal Thermoexcel-E square surface of 9.53 mm length. Tested refrigerants are R32, R22, R134a, R152a and R245fa. HTCs are taken from 10 $kW/m^2$ to critical heat fluxes for all refrigerant at $7^{\circ}C$. Wall and fluid temperatures are measured directly by thermocouples located underneath the test surface and in the liquid pool. Test results show that critical heat fluxes(CHFs) of Thermoexcel-E enhanced surface are greatly improved as compared to that of a plain surface in all tested refrigerants. CHFs of all refrigerants on the Thermoexcel-E surface are increased up to 100% as compared to that of the plain surface. The improvement of Thermoexcel-E surface in CHF, however, is lower than that of the low fin surface. HTCs on Thermoexcel-E surface increase with heat flux. But after certain heat flux, HTCs began to decrease due to the difficulty in bubble removal caused by the inherent complex nature of this surface. Therefore, at heat fluxes close to the critical one, sudden decrease in HTCs needs to be considered in thermal design with Thermoexcel-E surface.

  • This study aims to evaluate theoretically heat transfer characteristics and heat flux performance in ondol system of dried type is composed of panel of ceramics to improve of thermal conductivity and fin to expand heat. To this end, we analyzed effect of design factors(temperature of hot water, set temperature of room and thermal conductivity of finishing materials) in ondol system of dried type by heat transfer analysis. The main results of this study are summarized as follows; The deviation of heat flux and temperature was reduced by heat expansion from fin decreasing heat loss generated in air layer. The temperature and heat flux in upper finishing materials surface linearly increased according to temperature increment of hot water, but the temperature distribution in upper surface was assessed uneven. The greater heat resistance value of upper finishing materials, the deviation of maximum temperature and minimum temperature was decreased. Also, we suggested a basic design data about ondol system of dried type through an analysis of simulation results on heat transfer characteristics and heat flux performance.

  • Based on the monthly weather report of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) and daily sea surface temperature (SST) data from National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI) (1995-2004), mean heat fluxes were estimated at the port of Yeosu. Net heat flux was transported from the air to the sea surface during February to September, and it amounts to $205 Wm^{-2}$ in daily average value in May. During October to January, the transfer of net heat flux was conversed from the sea surface to the air with $-70 Wm^{-2}$ in minimum of daily average value in December. Short wave radiation was ranged from $167 Wm^{-2}$ in December to $300 Wm^{-2}$ in April. Long wave radiation (Sensible heat) was ranged from $27 (-14) Wm^{-2}$ in July to $90 (79) Wm^{-2}$ in December. Latent heat showed $42 Wm^{-2}$ with its minimum in July and $104 Wm^{-2}$ with its maximum in October in daily average value.

  • When the heat flux on the heating surface following changing heat condition in the boiling heat transfer system exceeds critical heat flux, the critical heat flux phenomenon is going over to immediately the film boiling area and then it is occurred the physical destruction phenomenon of various heat transfer systems. In order to maximize the safe operation and performance of the heat transfer system, it is essential to improve the CHF(Critical Heat Flux) of the system. Therefore, we have analysis the effect of improving CHF and characteristics of heat transfer following the nanoparticle coating thickness. As the results, copper nanocoating time are increased to CHF, and in case of nano-coatings are increased spray-deposited coating times more than in the fure water; copper nanopowder is increased up to 6.40%. The boiling heat transfer coefficients of the pure water are increased up to 5.79% respectively. Also, the contact angle is decreased and surface roughness is increased when nano-coating time is increasingly going up.

  • It is our goal to obtain a better scientific understanding of how to define the nature and role of remotely sensed land surface parameters and energy fluxes in the heat island phenomena, and local and regional weather and climate. By using the TRMM (Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission) visible and thermal imagery data and analyzing the surface energy flux images associated with the change of the landcover and land use in the study area, we present how significant is the magnitude of the heat island heat effect and its relation with the surface parameters and the energy fluxes in the Taichung area of Taiwan. We used the energy budget components such as net radiation, soil heat flux, sensible heat flux, and latent heat flux in the study area of interest derived form remotely sensed data to understand the island heat effect in Taichung. The results show that water is the most important component to decrease the temperature, and the more the consumed net radiation to latent heat, the lower the urban surface temperature.

  • In this study, condensation heat transfer tests were conducted in flat aluminum multi-channel tubes using R-22. Two internal geometries were tested ; one with smooth inner surface and the other with micro-fins. Data are presented for the followin~ range of variables ; vapor quality($0.1{\sim}0.9$), mass flux($200{\sim}600kg/m^2s$) and heat flux($5{\sim}15kW/m^2$). The micro-fin tube showed higher heat transfer coefficients compared with those of the smooth tube. The difference increased as the vapor quality increased. Surface tension force acting on the micro-fin surface at the high vapor quality is believed to be responsible. Different from the trends of the smooth tube, where the heat transfer coefficient increased as the mass flux increased, the heat transfer coefficient of the micro-fin tube was independent of the mass flux at high vapor quality, which implies that the surface tension effect on the fin overwhelms the vapor shear effect at the high vapor quality. Present data(except those at low mass flux and high quality) were well correlated by equivalent Reynolds number, Existing correlations overpredicted the present data at high mass flux.
