To improve the total efficiency of centrifugal compressor, it is necessary to reduce the disk friction loss, which is defined as the power loss. In this study, the disk friction loss due to the axial clearance and the surface roughness effect is analyzed and proposed the new empirical equation for the reduction of the disk friction loss. The rotating reference frame technique and the 2-equation k-${\omega}$ SST model using commercial CFD code FLUENT is used for the steady-state analysis of the centrifugal compressor impeller. According to CFD results, the disk friction loss of the impeller is more affected by the surface roughness than the change of the axial clearance. For the minimization of the disk friction loss on the centrifugal compressor impeller, the magnitude of the axial clearance should be designed to the same size compare with theoretical boundary layer thickness and the surface roughness should be minimized.
In order to accumulate data to lower the friction coefficient of a press mold, tribological tests were performed before and after coating SM45C with a PVC/PO film and plasma coating (CrN, concept). The ultrasonic nanocrystal surface modification (UNSM)-treated material had a nano-size surface texture, high surface hardness, and large and deep compressive residual stress formation. Even when the load was doubled, the small amount of abrasion, small weight of the abrasion, and width and depth of the abrasion did not increase as much as those of untreated materials. A comparison of the weight change before and after the tribological test with the CrN and the concept coating material and that of the untreated material showed that the wear loss of the concept coating material and P-UNSM treated material (that is, the UNSM treated material treated with the concept coating) showed a tendency to decrease by approximately 55-75%. Concept 100N had a lower friction coefficient of about 0.6, and P-UNSM-30-100N showed almost the same curve as concept 100N and had a low coefficient of friction of about 0.6. The concept multilayer coating had a thickness of $5.32{\mu}m$. In the beginning, the coefficient of friction decreased because of the plasma coating, but it started to increase from about 250-300 s. After about 350 s, the coefficient of friction tended to approach the friction coefficient of the SM45C base metal. The SGV-280F film-attached test specimen was slightly pushed back and forth, but the SM45C base material was not exposed due to abrasion. The friction coefficient was 0.22, which was the lowest, and the tribological property was the best in this study.
The surface texture produced via surface texturing is an important approach for controlling the tribological behavior of friction behavior of mechanical devices. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of grooves generated via ultrasonic nanocrystal surface modification (UNSM) technology on the tribological performance of AISI 4150 steel against stainless steel 316L. In the study, tribological tests are performed under two different regimes, namely mixed and hydrodynamic lubrication, by varying the applied normal load and reciprocating speed during the tests. According to the test results, the friction coefficient decreases as static load (10 N, 30 N, and 50 N) of UNSM technology increases in the mixed lubrication regime. Conversely, the friction coefficient increases as the static load (10 N, 30 N, and 50 N) of UNSM technology increases in the hydrodynamic lubrication regime. Hence, the results indicate that micro-grooves generate hydrodynamic pressure in the outlet, which increases the oil film thickness between the two mating surfaces. This potentially leads to a reduction in friction in the mixed lubrication regime due to the prevention of contact of asperities and debris. However, the results indicate an adverse effect in the hydrodynamic lubrication regime. In this regard, additional experiments should be performed to investigate the effect of grooves generated by UNSM technology at varying conditions on the friction behavior of AISI 4150 steel, which in turn can be controlled by the generated pressure and oil film thickness at the contact interface.
Water is known to playa crucial role on friction of moving parts in nanoscale contact. Little is, however, known about the tribological behavior of a solid surface that is covered with water adsorption layer. The objective of this study is to investigate the nanotribological behavior of the water layer in relation to water affinity of the surface and relative humidity. This paper presents an examination of the frictional behavior of water adsorption layer as 'confined liquid film'. It is shown that the friction is inversely proportional to the hydrophilicity of surface and relative humidity. On the other hand, friction of hydrophobic surface is not influenced by relative humidity. A model is proposed for the water-mediated contact in which it is shown that the water layer between two hydrophilic surfaces with high relative humidity behaves as a lubricant.
The success of warm forming of Mg alloy sheet is greatly influenced by friction at elevated temperature, depending on the surface treatment of the tool. The tool coating affected the frictional characteristics of AZ31B Mg alloy sheet at elevated and room temperatures. The frictional behavior of the Mg alloy sheet at room temperature was not significantly affected by surface treatment conditions of the tool, but was significantly affected at elevated temperature. When the contact pressure is high, a few surface-treated tools exhibit a higher coefficient of friction than those without surface treatment. It is important to select the surface treatment conditions of the tool in order to ensure appropriate friction during warm forming of Mg alloy sheet.
This study surveys the fabric surface properties such as mean value of the coefficient of friction(MIU), mean deviation of the coefficient of friction(MMD) and mean deviation of surface roughness(SMD) due to warp and weft tension differences using KES-FB system. For this purpose, fabric is designed as 5 harness Satin weave using 150d/48f warp and 200d/384f weft polyester filaments, and is woven by Omega$^{(R)}$ rapier loom by Textec Co.Ltd and Vamatex-P1001ES$^{(R)}$ rapier loom by Vamatex Co.Ltd respectively. These grey fabrics are processed on the same dyeing and finishing processes. The fabric surface properties according to the weaving looms are analysed with warp and weft weaving tensions. And also surveyed the difference of fabric surface properties according to the fabric positions such as center and each edge of fabrics for the sensitive garment. Fabric thickness was also measured and discussed according to the fabric positions such as center and each of fabrics with two looms weaving tensons.

This paper proposes a method for predicting maximum friction coefficients and optimal slip ratios as optimal control parameters for traction control or slip control of autonomous mobile robots on rough terrain. This paper focuses on strength of ground surface which indicates different characteristics depending on material types on surface. Strength of various material types can be estimated by Willoughby sinkage model and by a developed testbed which can measure forces, velocities, and displacements generated by wheel-terrain interaction. Estimated strength is collaborated on building improved Brixius model with friction-slip data from experiments with the testbed over sand and grass material. Improved Brixius model covers widespread material types in outdoor environments on predicting friction-slip characteristics depending on strength of ground surface. Thus, a prediction model for obtaining optimal control parameters is derived by partial differentiation of the improved Brixius model with respect to slip. This prediction model can be applied to autonomous mobile robots and finally gives secure maneuverability on rough terrain. Proposed method is verified by various experiments under similar conditions with the ones for real outdoor robots.
Understanding of the tribological characteristics of polytetrafluoroethylen (PTFE) and ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is crucial for their applications such as bearing and total joint replacement. In this work, the effect of the surface roughness of carbon steel on the tribological behaviors of PTFE and UHMWPE was experimentally investigated by using block-on-ring tribotester with friction force monitoring capability. It was found that that the amount of material transfer layers of PTFE formed on the carbon steel was significantly larger than those of UHMWPE, which was responsible the lower friction coefficient of PTFE. It was also concluded that the effect of surface roughness of carbon steel on the friction coefficient of UHMWPE was more significant than that of PTFE. For UHMWPE, it was found that the effect of surface roughness of counterface was varied with respect to applied normal force and sliding as well. Based on Archard's wear law, the wear coefficient of PTFE and UHMWPE was calculated to be $3{\times}10^{-5}$ ~ $8{\times}10^{-5}$ and $7{\times}10^{-6}$ ~ $2{\times}10^{-5}$, respectively.

Friction material, an integral constituent of bearing supports, facilitates frictional interactions between two components. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), a commonly employed friction material in bearing supports, has assessed resultant friction equilibrium. Nonetheless, protracted utilization diminishes frictional performance as the lubricating agent is progressively depleted. Friction materials can affect the entire structural system. Hence, this study applied ceramic material as a friction material due to its high strength, low friction, and low deformation. The frictional behavior was investigated using a cyclic friction test, considering various friction materials as the primary design variables and examining their covariance in cyclic frictional movements. The results substantiated that the ceramic friction material yielded a low variance and friction coefficients in cyclic frictional movements.

Micro/nano adhesion and friction properties of mixed self-assembled monolayer (SAM) with different chain length for MEMS application were experimentally studied. Many kinds of SAM having different spacer chains(C6, C10 and C18) and their mixtures (1:1) were deposited onto Si-wafer, where the deposited SAM resulted in the hydrophobic nature. The adhesion and friction properties between tip and SAM surfaces under nano scale applied load were measured using an atomic force microscope (AFM) and under micro scale applied load were measured using ball-on-flat type micro-tribotester. Surface roughness and water contact angles were measured with SPM (scanning probe microscope) and contact anglemeter. Results showed that water contact angles of mixed SAMs were similar to those of pure SAMs. The morphology of coating surface was roughened as mixing of SAM. Nano adhesion and nano friction decreased as increasing of the spacer chain length and mixing of SAM. Micro friction was decreased as increasing of the spacer chain length, but micro friction of mixed SAM showed the value between pure SAMs. Nano adhesion and friction mechanism of mixed SAM was proposed in a view of stiffness of spacer chain modified chemically and topographically.
