  • In this work, the electrical characteristics of organic thin film transistors with the surface-treated organic gate insulator have been studied. For the surface treatment, the photoalignment technique was used. The field effect mobilities of the devices with PVP gate insulator was improved about ten times as high as those of TFTs without the insulator surface treatment.

  • We studied liquid crystal (LC) alignment with ion beam (IB) on polyimide and electro-optical characteristics of twisted nematic (TN)-liquid crystal display (LCD) on the polyimide surface using obliquely ion beam exposure. A good uniform alignment of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment with the ion beam exposure on the polyimide surface was observed. In addition, it can be achieved the good EO properties, and residual DC property of the ion-beam-aligned TN-LCD on polyimide surface.

  • In this paper, a 3D model of the surface deformation is created in virtual environment. A proposed method is based on the fuzzy model and it is enough that only one rule set is added to the fuzzy model to model a surface deformation. Furthermore, the designer can easily determine which parameters should be used and how they should be changed in order to obtain the shapes as required. The proposed method is, thus, a simple, but effective technique that can also be used in practical applications. The results of the computer simulation are also given to demonstrate the validity of the proposed algorithm.

  • The breakdown characteristics of surface discharge investigated experimentally agree well with the analytic results of previous reports [1-3] in various electrode geometries. Additionally, we find that the electrode geometry effects on the firing voltage can be understood with the ionization probability relating to the number of priming particles. We have also observed the shape of surface discharge and the surface striations in the gap geometry with the pressure, the applied voltage, and the driving frequency.

  • A surface-assisted photo-control of the liquid crystal (LC) alignment has been achieved by modifying the topmost surface of the polyimide film with photo-reactive molecules. Recently, photo-alignment technique using a thin film of poly(vinyl cinnamates) have been reported. However their commercial potentiality is limited by their low thermal stability. To enhance thermal stability, we synthesized the chalcone derivatives as the photo-reactive molecules and introduced the materials on the surface-modified polyimide film.. We identified that the photo-chemical reaction of the chalcone derivatives occur in few minutes with irradiation of UV light. The photo-alignment characteristics of the modified polyimide films treated by polarized UV light and their LC cells are investigated as a function of exposure dose.

  • A light-guide is one of several important components of backlight unit in TFT-LCD. The manufacturing technology and optical system design of the light guide is very sensitive to quality and cost of the TFT-LCD module. In the present study a new manufacturing method which is called as direct surface forming(DSF) has been tested under various conditions. DSF is very similar to the well-known hot embossing except for partial contact between mold and substrate. The final V-groove pattern shows different shapes depend on the temperature of mold surface, contact time of mold and depth of V-groove.

  • MgO thin films were reactively deposited using an internal inductively coupled plasma assisted sputtering method varying reactive gas ratio to get stoichiometric film composition, and bipolar dc substrate bias to suppress micro arcs. The minimum frequency required for arc suppression was about 10KHz depending on ICP power. Their crystallinity was analyzed using X-ray diffraction and surface morphology using AFM. The surface was very smooth with rms roughness less than 0.42nm. The preferred orientation of the films were changing from (200) to bulk-like characteristics as Ar: $O_2$ratio was controlled to 10 : 2. Optical emission spectroscopy revealed that there were two distinct discharge modes: a blue one and a green one, where enhanced emission from Ar and Mg were observed. This cannot simply be understood by metallic or oxide mode of reactive sputtering due to ICP coupled to magnetron discharge.

  • We investigated vertical liquid crystal (LC) alignment effects of a self-assembled-monolayer (SAM) prepared on an anisotropic $SiO_2$ surface where the field-induced LC reorientation produced a uniform single domain texture. We compared the results with the homeotropic-to-random planar reorientation results shown in LCs aligned on a SAM surface prepared on an isotropic $SiO_2$ surface.

  • Carbon nanotube (CNT) cathodes having a trench structure similar to the structure of the gated triodetype cathode were successfully fabricated by a screenprinting method with multi-walled carbon nanotubes. We observed that a liquid method not only readily removes the organic residues on the CNT films, but also satisfactorily protrudes the CNTs out of the electrode surface. The CNT cathodes prepared by the liquid method showed a turned-on field of $1.4\;V/{\mu}m$. The emission current density of them was about $3.1\;mA/cm^2$ at the electric field of $3\; V/{\mu}m$. The liquid method appears to be a promising surface treatment of CNT cathode for gated triode-type FEDs applications.

  • We investigated the effect of the abrasive and additive concentrations in Nano ceria slurry on the pad surface temperature under varying pressure through chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) test using blanket wafers. The pad surface temperature after CMP increased with the abrasive concentration and decreased with increase of the additive concentration in slurries for the constant down pressure. A possible mechanism is that the additive adsorbed on the film surface during polishing decreases the friction coefficient, hence the pad surface temperature gets lower with increase of the additive concentration. This difference of temperature was more remarkable for the higher concentration of abrasives. In addition, in-situ measurement of spindle motor was carried out during oxide and nitride polishing. The averaged motor current for oxide film was higher than that for nitride film, which means the higher friction coefficient.
