  • Carbon nanotubes (CNT) emitter has widely become an attractive mechanism that draws growing interests for cold cathode field emission.$^{1,2}$ CNT yarns have demonstrated its potential as excellent field emitters.$^3$ Extensive simulations were carried out in designing a CNT yarn-based cathode assembly. The focal spot size dependence on the anode surface of the geometric parameters such as axial distance of the electrostatic focus lens from the cathode and the applied bias voltages at the cathode, grid mesh and electrostatic focus lens were studied. The detailed computer simulations using Opera 3D electromagnetic software$^4$ had revealed that a remarkable size of focal spot under a focusing lens triode type set-up design was achieved. The result of this optimization simulation would then be applied for the construction of the CNT yarn based micro-focus x-ray tube with its field emission characteristics evaluated.

  • $ZrO_2/PSS$ thin film with a high refractive index was fabricated on a glass substrate by a layer-by-layer self-assembly method. The surface morphology and thickness of the fabricated $ZrO_2/PSS$ thin films were measured as a function of the number of $(ZrO_2/PSS)n$. As the number of $(ZrO_2/PSS)n$ increased from n = 5 to n = 20, RMS roughness decreased from 29.01 nm to 8.368 nm. The $ZrO_2$ thin films exhibited high transmittance of 85% or more; and the 15-bilayer thin film exhibited the highest transmittance among the samples. The transmittance of the fabricated $(ZrO_2/PSS)_{15}$ thin film was ca. 90.8% in the visible range. The refractive index of the glass substrate coated by a $(ZrO_2/PSS)_{15}$ thin film with a thickness of 160 nm increased from ca. 1.52 to 1.74 at the 632 nm wavelength.

  • In this paper, GaN film was grown on AlN/PSS by hydride vapor phase epitaxy compared with GaN on planar sapphire. Thin AlN layer for buffer layer was deposited on patterned sapphire substrate (PSS) by metal organic chemical vapor deposition. Surface roughness of GaN/AlN on PSS was remarkably decreased from 28.31 to 5.53 nm. Transmittance of GaN/AlN grown on PSS was lower than that of planar sapphire at entire range. XRD spectra of GaN/AlN grown on PSS corresponded the wurzite structure and c-axis oriented. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) values of ${\omega}$-scan X-ray rocking curve (XRC) for GaN/AlN grown on PSS were 196 and 208 arcsec for symmetric (0 0 2) and asymmetric (1 0 2), respectively. FWHM of GaN on AlN/PSS was improved more than 50% because of lateral overgrowth and AlN buffer effect.

  • In hot strip mills, Portable Roll Scanner (the portable roll surface temperature and profile measuring device) can be used to calibrate on-line Process models for strip crown and flatness by measuring the thermal expansion and wear profile of the rolls. And the surface temperature measurement can be used to optimize the roll cooling system. Portable Roll Scanner consists of the measuring device, which has two contact inductive distance transducers for roll profile measurement and one infrared Pyrometer for surface temperature measurement, and computer-based controller that is equipped with the measuring device. By the wireless data communication, the data is transferred to the memory of notebook for further analysis. After roll extraction from mills, Portable Roll Scanner measure the roll profile and surface temperature simultaneously along the work roll face and display the results in the TFT color monitor of notebook. Portable Roll Scanner is useful at mill-side and roll grinding shop.

  • A three-dimensional surface is reconstructed from contour information as identified on two-dimensional computed tomographic slices. Gradient operator with curvature constraint would be applied to extract the contour automatically, and backtracking is also adopted to reduce the tracking error. The surface between the consecutive slice is efficiently reconstructed using a triangular surface tiles. Hidden surface elimination, shading and parallel projection of the reconstructed surface are provied on the display screen.

  • A new photoalignment material PNC, pole norbornene-2,3-dicarboxyolyl cholesterol, was synthesized and the electro-optical (EO) characteristics of the vortical-alignment (VA) liquid crystal display (LCD) photoaligned with UV exposure on the PNC surface were studied. EO characteristics of the photoaligned VA-LCD using a UV filter-less method was better than that of the UV filter method on the PNC surface for short UV exposure time. The response time of the photoaligned VA-LCD on the PNC surface without UV filter on the PNC surface is almost the same compared with the rubbing aligned VA-LCD.

  • In order to study the relationship between the discharge characteristics of an ac PDP and the surface conductivity of MgO thin film, the surface current across a ring shaped MgO film was measured by exposure to monochromatic vacuum ultraviolet from the synchrotron radiation source whose wavelength ranges from 60nm to 240nm $(5.5eV{\sim}25eV)$. The experimental results show that the surface current begins to increase rapidly at the photon energy of about 9 eV which might correspond to the valence band edge of MgO. The difference in the surface current level correlate well with the differences in the preparation method of MgO films and their respective discharge characteristics such as the firing, minimum sustain voltages, address voltage margin and address discharge delay time.

  • In this paper, the response surface modeling of the pretilt angle control in the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) on the homogeneous polyimide surface with different surface treatment is investigated The rubbing strength and the hard baking temperature are considered as input factors. After the design of experiments is performed, the process model is then explored using the response surface methodology. The analysis of variance is used to analyze the statistical significance and the effect plots are also investigated to examine the relationship between the process parameters and the response.

  • Electro-optical (EO) performances of the ion beam (IB) aligned twisted-nematic (TN)-liquid crystal display (LCD) with ion beam exposure on the new diamond-like carbon (DLC) thin film surface were investigated. A good voltage-transmittance (V-T) curve of the ion beam aligned TN-LCD with oblique ion beam exposure on the DLC thin film surface for 1 min was observed. Also, the fast response time of the ion beam aligned TN-LCD with oblique ion beam exposure on the DLC thin film surface for 1 min can be achieved. Finally, the residual DC voltage of the ion beam aligned TN-LCD on the DLC thin film surface is almost the same as that of the rubbing aligned TN-LCD on a polyimide (Pl) surface.

  • Surface relief holograms are fabricated by means of irradiation of laser interference patterns. The diffraction efficiency and the surface relief depth depend on the writing energy and the polarization of the writing laser beam. This structure is very stable at temperatures under glass transition temperature $T_g$ and can be erased by heating above $T_g$. We proposed a new technique to control the surface relief structure. The electric charge was deposited on the surface relief grating in a corona-depositing poling setup in an oven. The first-order diffraction efficiency measured before and after corona discharge increased from about 0.24 % to about 28 %. This diffraction efficiency increase is mainly caused by the increase of the relief depth caused by the electric charge. The relief depth is increased from 20 nm to 350 nm by corona charging. .
