Surface Driven Switching in Liquid Crystal Displays

  • Surface driven switching of the liquid crystal bulk arising from the coupling between an applied electric field and a polarized state of a nematic liquid crystal, both localized at the substrate surface, is reported. Fast switching is demonstrated in a hybrid aligned nematic cell with a fringe electric field generated by comb-like electrode structure.

  • 오늘날 연성회로기판(FCCL : Flexible Copper Clad Laminate)은 디스플레이, 스마트폰, 자동차, 항공, 의료 기기, 산업용 컨트롤 기기 등 거의 모든 고급 전자 제품들에 사용되고 있다. 특히 디스플레이 분야에서는 뛰어난 연성과 내구성을 바탕으로 경박단소화에 유리할 뿐만 아니라 구동부에 적용이 가능한 장점 등으로 그 적용처가 점점 늘어나고 있는 추세이다. 이 가운데서도 LCD와 OLED의 구동소자(Display Driver IC)를 장착하는 COF(Chip on Film)는 대표적인 연성회로기판(FCCL) 적용 부품으로서, 최근 인기를 끌고 있는 디스플레이의 제로-베젤(Zero-bezel)을 가능케 하는 핵심 부품이다. COF용 연성회로기판(FCCL) 소재로는 우수한 평탄도, 파인피치(Fine-pitch)구현성, 내굴곡성, 광투과성 등을 보유하고 있는 Sputtering Type FCCL이 사용되고 있다. 특히 최근 Display 분야의 화두가 되고 있는 POLED(Plastic-OLED) 패널을 장착한 Flexible Mobile 디스플레이의 경우, 기존의 COG(Chip on Glass) 접합방식이 아닌 COF 접합방식을 채택하고 있으며, 기존의 단면 COF보다 3배의 고해상도 구현이 가능한 양면 COF를 채택하기에 이르렀다. 기존의 COF 제작공정과 달리 Semi Additive 공정으로 제작되는 양면 COF 시장의 태동으로 양면 연성회로기판(FCCL)의 수요 증가가 예상되는 등 최근 디스플레이 기술 발전은 소재 분야에도 큰 변화를 잉태하고 있다. 이러한 최근 디스플레이 업계의 고해상도, 고속 신호 전송, 슬림화, Flexible 추세에 대응 가능한 최적의 특성을 보유하고 있는 Sputtering Type FCCL을 중심으로 디스플레이의 발전에 대응하는 소재의 기술 개발 동향을 살펴보고자 한다.

Discharge characteristics of FFL as the variation of cell structure (셀 구조 변화에 따른 FFL(Flat Fluorescent Lamp)의 방전특성)

  • Recently, Display devices have become important in the information-oriented society and flat display devices are greatly demanded. Liquid crystal display(LCD) represents one of the most promising devices for large size desk-top monitors, notebook PC and car navigation system. However LCD cannot give forth light itself and must have backlight system. The most popular backlighting system is composed of a lighting-guide plate and CCFL as a lighting source. The number of CCFL must increase up if the area of display is increased. So a new backlighting source with high luminance is needed for large LCDs. In this paper, we proposed a surface discharge FFL with the new electrode structure like the needle shaped electrode as the variation of cell structure to high luminance and low power consumption. In comparison with different electrode structure it has low discharge voltage and current and good optical characteristics. So it has better discharge characteristics than different surface discharge FFL and can be fungible for a backlight as a lighting source in LCDs.

  • In this paper, we propose a development methodology of interactive stereoscopic image display system. In our case, we consider a multiple touch recognition technique as the interaction method. That's because we want to guarantee multiple user access and interaction to the content without any restriction. In this case, however, some restrictions are occurred on account of the distance between display and participants. For this reason, this paper propose an invisible interaction surfaces which are generated in the air. This surface is utilized as interaction medium instead of the display wall. We also present an effective way to generate and edit interactive stereoscopic images based on Game Engine.

  • There is so much difference in the way we perceive nature whether from eastern or western, present or past standpoint. however, awareness of coexistence between human beings and nature along with the concept that the most natural is th e most beautiful remain unchanged. The desire to describe the beauty of nature have existed all through the ages, but the (new) naturalism movement was spawned in our time when so much devastation and side effects took place for the expediency of nature, and field of display has been trying new interpretation of nature with direct or applied method. Naturalism trend is studied using the categories such as relationship between human and nature, space concept in western and eastern society, and the definition of view of nature in modern time. Elements of naturalism display are classified into the element of physical properties and element beyond the physical properties, and then methodology on naturalism display is investigated, using the illustration of display examples, in order to know the most essential elements of display, which are the physical properties such as space, light, object, glass, are expressed based on the elemental concept like nature, an accident, dynamic state, variability. As mentioned above, Naturalism display consists of physical properties and phenomenon. How to ive strong impression to a spectator depends on the ability to create effective space applying these elements. The significance of this study comes to surface in a time when the tremendous emphasis is put on the importance of nature and concerns about the role of display has become even greater.

Incorporation of Nasutitermes takasagoensis Endoglucanase into Cell Surface-Displayed Minicellulosomes in Pichia pastoris X33

  • In this study, the yeast Pichia pastoris was genetically modified to assemble minicellulosomes on its cell surface by the heterologous expression of a truncated scaffoldin CipA from Clostridium acetobutylicum. Fluorescence microscopy and western blot analysis confirmed that CipA was targeted to the yeast cell surface and that NtEGD, the Nasutitermes takasagoensis endoglucanase that was fused with dockerin, interacted with CipA on the yeast cell surface, suggesting that the cohesin and dockerin domains and cellulose-binding module of C. acetobutylicum were functional in the yeasts. The enzymatic activities of the cellulases in the minicellulosomes that were displayed on the yeast cell surfaces increased dramatically following interaction with the cohesin-dockerin domains. Additionally, the hydrolysis efficiencies of NtEGD for carboxymethyl cellulose, microcrystal cellulose, and filter paper increased up to 1.4-fold, 2.0-fold, and 3.2-fold, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report describing the expression of C. acetobutylicum minicellulosomes in yeast and the incorporation of animal cellulases into cellulosomes. This strategy of heterologous cellulase incorporation lends novel insight into the process of cellulosome assembly. Potentially, the surface display of cellulosomes, such as that reported in this study, may be utilized in the engineering of S. cerevisiae for ethanol production from cellulose and additional future applications.

Interaction of acetone molecule on Si(001) surface: A theoretical study (Si(001) 표면과 acetone 분자의 상호작용에 대한 이론적 연구)

  • We study the interaction of acetone molecule $[(CH_3)_2CO]$ on Si(001) surface using density functional theory. An acetone molecule is adsorbed on a Si atom of the Si dimer of the Si(001) surface. The adsorption of the acetone molecule on the Si atom at lower height between the two Si atoms of the dimer is more favorable than that on the Si atoms at upper height. Then we calculate an energy variation of dissociation and four-membered ring structures of the acetone molecule adsorbed on the Si surface. Total energy difference between the two structures is about 0.05 eV, indicating that the two structures are almost equally stable. Energy barrier exists when a hydrogen atom is dissociated and adsorbed on the other Si atom of the dimer, while energy barrier does not exist when the adsorbed acetone molecule changes to four-membered ring structure, except for the rotation of the acetone molecule along z-direction. Therefore, four-membered ring structure is kinetically more favorable than the dissociation structure when the acetone molecule is adsorbed on the Si(001) surface.

  • One of the most critical aspects of the modern semiconductor industry is the quality of wafer surface, the roughness of which is mostly caused by the ingot slicing. And the grinding is supposed to be the main process to reduce the surface roughness. The vibrations of the disc surface grinder are the major problem to effectively achieve the required surface quality. In this study, the structure of a disc surface grinder was analyzed through the experiment and the computer simulation to investigate the dynamic characteristics of the machine, and further to alter the design for the improved stability. The result of the study shows that simple design alterations without alternating main body can effectively suppress the vibrations of the machine.

  • In Korea, the car mobile phone service had started in 1961 and with this Korea Mobile Telecommunications Services was established in 1984. Its service was mainly focused on the mobile phone service for the car which led the popularity of the full-scale mobile phone service. There are many kinds of materials, colors and patterns which are the elements of surface coating techniques. In light of that, we are focused on the UV coating that is ranked as an important part of the techniques in this study. In the first, the use of various materials for the cellular phone and surface processing techniques for the cellular phone were searched. On the basis of the results, the experiments of actual consumer experience with the exfoliation of the surface were done and through that we proposed the best way of processing the surface for the cellular phone and the materials. The result of the Wear Test showed that thick coating was detached more slowly and each company differed in their results with UV paints despite the same thickness of UV coating. The seal (UV) exfoliation of cellular phone is deeply related with the film thickness and the film formation when the users use the cellular phones and the exfoliation of the cellular phone surface will be decreased if the manufacturers meet the best conditions for the cellular phone.

  • A lot of the data currently measured is measured based on indicators, but since the height value of the measurement point is not used as basic data, difficulties arise when trying to use it in a three-dimensional geographic information system. Various methods can be used to create polygons by drawing points on the surface using topographic information or extracting the height value of each measurement point on the surface in order to display large quantities on the surface. Among the various types of data expression methods, this study attempts a data construction and display method to improve visualization performance of time series measurement data expressed on the surface, and examines its procedures and strengths and weaknesses.
