  • An integral computer code has been developed for a mechanical and thermal design and performance analysis of an oxide fuel rod in a pressurized water reactor. The code designated as FROD 1.0 takes into account the phenomena of radial power depression within the pellet, cracking, densification and swelling of the pellet, fission gas release, clad creep, pellet-clad contact, heat transfer to coolant and buildup of corrosion layers on the clad surface. The FROD 1.0 code yields two-dimensional temperature distributions, dimensional changes, stresses, and internal pressure of a fuel rod as a function of irradiation time within a reasonable computation time. The code may also be used for the analyses of oxide fuel rods in other thermal reactors. As an application of FROD 1.0 the behavior of fuel rod loaded in the first core of Go-ri Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1 is predicted for the two power histories corresponding to steady state operation and Codition II of the ANS Classification. The results are compared with the design criteria described in the Final Safety Analysis Report and a discrepancy between these two values is discussed herein.

  • Performance demonstration with real flawed specimens has been strongly required for nondestructive evaluation of safety class components in nuclear power plant. Mechanical or thermal fatigue crack and intergranular stress corrosion cracking could be occured in the in-service nuclear power plant and mechanical fatigue crack was selected to study in this paper. Specimen was designed to produce mechanical fatigue flaw under tensile stress. The number of cycles and the level of stress were controlled to obtain the desired flaw roughness. After the accurate physical measurement of the flaw size and location, fracture surface was seal-welded in place to ensure the designed location and site. The remaining weld groove was then filled by using gas-tungsten are welding(GTAW) and flux-cored arc welding(FCAW). Results of radio graphic and ultrasonic testing showed that fatigue cracks were consistent with the designed size and location in the final specimens.

  • This is the study on dry sliding wear behavior of unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced epoxy matrix composite at ambient temperature. The wear rates and friction coefficients against the stainless steel counterpart specularly processed were experimentally determined and the resulting wear mechanisms were microscopically observed. Three principal sliding directions relative to the dominant fiber orientation in the composite wear selected. When sliding took place against smooth and hard counterpart, the highest were resistance and the lowest friction coefficient were observed in the antiparallel direction. When the velocity between the composite and the counterpart went up, the wear rate increased. The fiber destruction and cracking caused fiber bending on the contact surface, which was discovered to be dominant wear mechanism.

  • The fatigue behavior of GFRP composites is affected by environmental parameters. Therefore, we have to study on effect of sea water on fatigue behavior of GFRP composites as to maintain the safety and confidence in design of ocean structure of GFRP. In this paper, we investigated the fatigue properties of chopped strand glass mat/polyester composite in synthetic sea water. (pH 8.2) In case of the glass fiber (CSM type) reinforced polyester composite materials, the fatigue crack in the both dry and wet specimens tested in air or synthetic sea water occurred at the initial of cycle. Thereafter, it was divided with two regions that one decreased with the crack extension and the other increased with the crack extension. The transition point occurred during the crack propagation shifted to high ${\Delta}K$ value as load increase but its point is not changed regardless of immersion or test environment under a constant load. The synthetic sea water degrades the bond strength between fiber and matrix, thereby the tendency of rapid deceleration and acceleration of the crack growth was appeared.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the quality properties of Meju prepared by inoculating two strains of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens HJ5-2, and Aspergillus oryzae PS03. The three soybean varieties that include Daewonkong, Daechan, and Saedanbaek were used in this experiment. The fermentation temperature during the Meju aging varied at 20℃, 30℃, and 40℃, respectively. The physicochemical analysis of the soybeans, showed that the cured protein and fat contents were 34.83~43.49% and 12.91~18.90%, respectively. The pH and total acidity were 6.47~6.93 and 0.11~1.22%, respectively. The change in appearance of the Meju was that the yellow-green mold was well formed on seven days at fermentation temperature of 20℃ and 30℃, but at 40℃, there was minimal mold formation and cracking of the surface. The amino nitrogen content was highest on the Daechan Meju at 621.83 mg% for seven days. The amylase increased as the fermentation period increased in all samples, and the protease increased rapidly until the first day of the fermentation, and then gradually increased thereafter. The total number of bacteria increased or decreased as the fermentation proceeded to 6.66~10.07 log CFU/g. The mold counts increased with increasing fermentation period in the range of 6.38~8.79 log CFU/g.

  • A laboratory investigation was conducted wherein smooth, rounded, siliceous river gravel aggregates were coated with fine-grained polyethylene, carpet co-product, or cement + styrene butadiene rubber latex and used to prepare hot mix asphalt concrete specimens. Only the coarse (+ No.4) aggregates were coated. The concept was that the coatings would enhance surface roughness of the aggregates and, thus, produce asphalt mixtures with superior engineering properties. Hot mix asphalt specimens were prepared and evaluated using several standard and non-standard test procedures. Based on experiences during the coating processes and analyses of these limited test results, the following was concluded: All three aggregate coating materials increased Hveem and Marshall stability, tensile strength, and resilient modulus(stiffness). These findings are indicative of improved resistance to rutting and cracking in hot mix asphalt pavements prepared using coated gravel aggregates in comparison to similar uncoated gravel aggregates.

  • We investigated the stability of the DLC film coated on 304 stainless steel substrate by Radio frequency assisted chemical vapor deposition method. Fracture and spallation behaviour of the coating was observed during micro-tensile test of the fil $m_strate composite. As the tensile deformation progressed, the cracks of the film were observed in the perpendicular direction to the tensile axis. Further deformation resulted in the plastic deformation with $45^{\circ}$ slip bands on the substrate surface. Spallation of the film occurred with the plastic deformation, which was initiated at the cracks of the film and was aligned along the slip directions. We found that both the cracking and the spallation behaviors are strongly dependent on the pre-treatment condition, such as Ar plasma pre-treatment. The spallation of the film was considerably suppressed in an optimized condition of the substrate cleaning by Ar glow discharge. We observed the improved stability with increasing duration of Ar plasma pre-treatment.nt.

  • To improve the durability of the turbocharger, it is important to suppress cracking of the turbine housing; therefore, we investigated the initiation and growth of these cracks. First, we initiated a crack in the turbine housing using endurance experiments. After the endurance test, cracks mainly occurred in the valve seat, the nozzle area, and the scroll part of the turbine housing. The results of a fracture analysis of the cracks showed that cracks in the valve seat were initiated by fatigue fracture. This seems to be caused by the accumulation of mechanical and thermal stresses due to vibration of the turbine wheel and high-temperature exhaust gas. Also, cracks in nozzle and scroll area were initiated by intergranular corrosion due to the exhaust gas. Thus, although there are differences in the cause of initiation according to the site, a concentric waveform was observed in all fracture planes. This phenomenon indicates that cracks gradually grow due to repeated stress changes, and the main causes are the temperature difference of the exhaust gas and the vibration caused by the turbine shaft.

  • This work was focused on the thermal decomposition of methane into hydrogen and carbon black without emitting carbon dioxide. Extensive experimental investigation on the thermal decomposition of methane has been carried out using a continuous flow reaction system with tubular reactor. The experiments were conducted at the atmospheric pressure condition in the wide range of temperature ($950-1150^{\circ}C$) and flow rate (250 - 1500 ml/min) in order to study their dependency on hydrogen yield. During the experiments the carbon black was successfully recovered as an useful product. Undesirable pyrocarbon was also formed as solid film, which was deposited on the inside surface of tubular reactor. The film of pyrocarbon in the reactor wall became thicker and thicker, finally blocking the reactor. The design of an efficient reactor which can effectively suppress the formation of pyrocarbon was thought to be one of the most important subjects in the thermal cracking of methane.

  • Outer diameter stress corrosion cracking (ODSCC) has occurred for Alloy 600 (Ni 75 wt%, Cr 15 wt%, Fe 10 wt%) as a heat exchanger tube of the steam generator (SG) in nuclear power plants (NPP) during long term operation. Among many causes for SCC, lead (Pb) is known to be one of the most deleterious species in the secondary system. In the present work, the oxide formed on Alloy 600 was characterized as a function of the PbO content in 0.1 M NaOH at $315^{\circ}C$ by using an electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), a transmission electron microscopy (TEM), equipped with an energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The oxide property was analyzed in view of SCC susceptibility.
