  • Recent development of scanning probe microscope techniques has made it possible to investigate, not only microscopic surface topography, but also physical and chemical properties on the nanometer-scale. The scanning Maxwell-stress microscopy (SMM) is surface characterization tool capable of mapping both the surface topography and electrical properties, such as surface potential, surface charge dielectric constant of thin films with a nanometer-scale resolution by means of the AC voltage driven oscillation of metal coated cantilever. In this study, we observed the surface potential distribution and molecular ordering in thin films. We have demonstrated that the SMM can be used for imaging surface potential distribution over the film surface and also be used for detecting surface changes in thin films. This is first step towards the understanding of electrical phenomena in organic and inorganic materials, biological system with SMM.

  • Vortices terminating at free surface have been investigated extensively. however. are focused on surface parallel vortices and little has been known about surface normal vortex or columnar vortex. Visualized experimental results utilizing LlF technique are discussed for the purpose of characterization of columnar vortex interacting with a clean and a contaminated free surfaces and a solid body interface in the present investigation. The results reveal that surface tension changes due to surface contamination although bulk viscosity remains constant and eventually the behavior of a columnar vortex interacting with a contaminated free surface and a solid body interface are totally different from the clean free surface case.

  • In this study, residual stress and surface roughness were investigated experimentally to evaluate surface integrity on surface layer machined by CBN, ceramics and WC cutting tools. When machining difficult-to-cut material (hardened STD11 steel $H_{R}$C 60), residual stresses remaining in machined surface layer were mainly compressive. The increase of flank wear caused a shift of the compressive residual stress maximum to greater workpiece depths, but the changes did not penetrate the workpiece beneath a depth of 300 .mu. m. Surface roughness was influenced considerably by variations of the cutting speed and feed. In machining hard material, CBN and A1$_{2}$ $O_{3}$ ceramics cutting tool materials proved significantly superior to mixed ceramics A1$_{2}$ $O_{3}$-TiC and WC in evaluation of surface integrity.y.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the polymerization shrinkage of several filling methods using strain gauges. In this study, a light-emitting diode(LED) curing unit(Elipar Freeligh2, 3M EPSE, USA) and plasma arc lamp(PAL) curing unit(Flipo, LOKKI, France) were used for curing, Filtek $Z350^{TM}$(3M EPSE, USA) composite resin was used for the cavity filling. Sixty permanent bicuspid teeth, that were extracted for orthodontic treatment, were studied. The cavities were prepared on the occlusal surface and were filled using the following methods : 1) bulk filling, 2) parallel filling, 3) oblique filling The strain was recorded on the buccal, lingual, mesial and distal surfaces and the strain values were computed into stress values. The shear bond strength of each filling method was tested using a Micro Universal Testing machine. The results can be summarized as follows: 1. In the strain changes, all LED and PAL curing groups showed an increase on the buccal surface and a slow decrease as time elapsed. 2. In the strain changes of the mesial and distal surfaces, the decreases and increases were shown repeatedly and reduced as time elapsed. 3. There were no significant statistical strain changes among filling methods in the LED or PAL curing groups. 4. There were significant statistical strain changes between the LED and PAL curing groups on the buccal surface(p<0.05). 5. From the shear bond strength results, in the LED curing group, filling method 3 showed lower surface stress than filling method 1 and 2(p<0.05). In the PAL curing group, there were no significant statistical strain changes between each filling method. 6. The surface stress of each group was lower than the shear bond strength.

  • A satellite scatterometer is a microwave radar sensor used to measure the backscattering at a sea surface. This instrument transmits radar pulses to the sea surface and measure the radar energy reflected back towards the source. Changes in wind velocity make sea surface roughness change and then affect on backscattered power. This gives us information of sea surface wind speed. Directions of wind vectors are acquired by multiple, collocated, and nearly simultaneous measurements. It should be noted that the scatterometer observes not the wind directly but the wind stress vector relative to the surface current. This suggests the possibility that the satellite scatterometer winds can include the effect of the surface current. This study shows the evidence that scatterometer measure surface wind stress, not surface winds and presents the velocity structure of oceanic warm and cold eddies.

  • Various carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are added into the epoxy matrix as reinforcements to investigate the effect on the wear behavior. Effects to the tribological properties of different loading concentrations and types of surface modification are investigated by using a linear reciprocal wear tester. As increasing the concentration of CNTs shows the reduction of the wear loss. Moreover, surface modified CNTs give better tribological property than as produced CNTs. It is due that the functional groups on the surface of CNTs increase the interfacial bonding between CNTs and epoxy matrix through chemical bonding. Changes in worn surface morphology are observed by optical microscope and SEM to investigate the wear behavior. CNTs in the epoxy matrix near the surface are exposed and it becomes the lubricating working film on the worn surface. It reduces the friction and results in the lower surface roughness morphology in the epoxy matrix as increasing the contents of the CNTs.

  • Experimental studies are carried out in order to investigate the effects of heat treatment on the surface machined by W-EDM. In this work, two ways of heat treatment after W-EDM are considered. As a comparison, the machined surface by a traditional method such as milling/grinding is also considered. Thereby, specimens are prepared by four different machining methods. Those are (1) milling and then grinding, (2) wire-cut electric discharge machining (W-EDM), and (3) low temperature heat treatment or (4) high temperature heat treatment after W-EDM. The resulting surface roughness are measured and the changes of surface microstructures are investigated using the scanning electron microscope (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS). In general, heat treatment after W-EDM result in smoother surface and better chemical composition at the machined surface. Especially, high temperature tempering could remove defects in the thermally affected zone, which cause an overall deterioration of the surface machined by W-EDM.

  • In order to understand the distribution of changes of geochemical characteristics in surface sediments according to various environmental changes around the artificial Lake Shihwa, surface sediments were sampled at $13{\sim}15$ sites form 1997 to 1999 and analyzed by C/S analyzer, ICP/MS and AAS. The average $S/C_{org}$ ratio was 0.35 in the surface sediments, which is similar to 0.36, the characteristic ratio of marine sediments. Heavy metal contents and enrichment factors in the surface sediments tended to be decreasing from the head to the mouth of the Lake Shihwa. With the deposition of fine-grained sediments in the central part of lake, anoxic water column induced the sulfides compounds with Cu, Cd and Zn. Metals such as Al, Fe, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn and Cd except for Mn and Pb showed relatively high correlation coefficients among them. The contents of Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn and Cd in the surface sediments of the lake were two to five times higher than those in the lake before dike construction and also in outer part of the dike. These are mainly due to the Input of untreated industrial and municipal waste-waters into the lake, and the accumulation of heavy metals by limitation of physical mixing. Although metal contents of the surface sediments at the sites near the water-gate due to outer seawater inflow tended to be lower than those during the desalination, heavy metals were deposited in areas around the new industrial complex in the evidence of spatial distribution of heavy metals in the sediments. This is mainly due to the input of untreated waste-waters from tributaries.

  • This study was done to evaluate the changes of enamel surface by interproximal stripping and recovery of it by polishing. The number of 34 1st premolars which had extracted for orthodontic treatment were selected as samples. Interproximal stripping was performed by hand with metal strip and strip placer (Dentaurum Co., Germany) and low speed handpiece with diamond disk (Superdiaflex, Germany). Polishing was performed by hand with plastic strip (3M Col) and low speed handpiece with whip-mix, DCPA (Dicalcium Phosphate, Anhydrous, $CaHPO_4$) powder and Sof-lex (3M Co. U.S.A.) polishing kit. Each groups were examined under the scanning electron microscope (JEOL Co., JSM-840A, Japan) and the following results were obtained: 1. The stripped group performed by metal strip and diamond disk altogether showed deep furrow on the enamel surface as wide as about $10{{\mu}m}$. 2. There could be seen more irregular scratched line in the group stripped by metal strip than that by diamond disk. 3. The polished group performed by plastic strip and DCPA powder showed slight smoothening of the edge of stripped furrow on the enamel surface without relation to the stripping method. 4. The polished group performed by Sof-lex progressive polishing kit could not avoid the formation of the furrows on the enamel surface according to the particle size without relation to the stripping method. 5. The polished group performed by the superfine polishing wheel, the final stage of Sof-lex polishing method showed shallow scratched line as wide as within about $2{{\mu}m}$ on the enamel surface without relation to the stripping method. 6. The interproximal stripped enamel surface could not recover its original surface texture by any kind of polishing methods.
