  • Nickel titanium shape memory alloys (NiTi) have been investigated for applications in the biomedical industry. However, little is known about the influences of surface modifications on the propertise of these alloys. The effect of electropolishing and heat treatments was found to exhibit significant surface roughness. Change of phase was B2, r-phase and B19' by heat treatments. In this study, effect of the electropolishing conditions on surface roughness is investigated in Ni-Ti alloys (Nitinol). Variation in phases with heat treatment temperature is investigated for a Ni-Ti alloy by X-ray diffraction and DSC. Characteristic of the microstructure have been observed by SEM. Surface roughness have been measured by AFM. The results clearly show that significant different in surface property to heat treated at $500^{\circ}C$ (R-phase). $TiO_2$ phases preciritated all of the specimens. It is not good effect of surface roughness because made to surface relief. The surface roughness appears to be important in the property of Ni-Ti alloys for biomedical applications.

  • The rotor of a turbomolecular drag pump is generally made of an aluminum alloy. Its surface finish is affected by various processes that the rotor itself undergoes during the manufacturing phase. The impact of different surface finishes on the pumping performances of a turbomolecular pump has been mainly investigated by Sawada et al [1]. The present work aims to broaden the previous bibliographic study to the drag stages of a turbomolecular pump by testing the impact of different surface finishes on the compression ratio of the pump. Experimental tests have been made focusing on two processes: the corundum sandblasting and the glass microspheres shot-peening. Both the processes flatten and/or physically remove EDM melted spheres; in particular, blasted surfaces obtained by glass shot-peening are generally smoother than surfaces obtained by corundum sandblasting. In order to characterize the surface texture left by such processes, preliminary surface roughness measurements have been made on the drag rotor disks of several pumps. The experimental tests conducted on both sandblasted and shot-peened rotors confirms previous results obtained on the turbo stages by Sawada et al. [1], showing that the average roughness of the surface has an impact on the compression ratio of the pump; in particular, an increment in the surface roughness causes a corresponding increment in the compression ratio of the pump and vice versa. For the tested pumps, the higher surface roughness gives a factor of increment of about 2 on the measured hydrogen maximum compression ratio of the pump.

  • Sapphire is currently used as a substrate material for blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The market for sapphire substrates has expanded rapidly as the use of LEDs has extended into various industries. However, sapphire is classified as one of the most difficult materials to machine due to its hardness and brittleness. Recently, a lap-grinding process has been developed to combine the lapping and diamond mechanical polishing (DMP) steps in a single process. This paper studies, the effect of wafer surface roughness on the chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) process by pressure and abrasive concentration in the lap-grinding process of a sapphire wafer. In this experiment, the surface roughness of a sapphire wafer is measured after lap-grinding by varying the pressure and abrasive concentration of the slurry. CMP is carried out under pressure conditions of 4.27 psi, a plate rotation speed of 103 rpm, head rotation speed of 97 rpm, and slurry flow rate of 170 ml/min. The abrasive concentration of the CMP slurry was 20wt, implying that the higher the surface roughness after lapgrinding, the higher the material removal rate (MRR) in the CMP. This is likely due to the real contact area and actual contact pressure between the rough wafer and polishing pad during the CMP. In addition, wafers with low surface roughness after lap-grinding show lower surface roughness values in CMP processes than wafers with high surface roughness values; therefore, further research is needed to obtain sufficient surface roughness before performing CMP processes.

  • With the development of surface roughness textured steel for automotive body-in-white assemble, one of key issues is to understand the role of the surface roughness in textured steel sheets. To investigate effect of surface roughness on weldability in prepared steels, electrode force was varied. Steel sheets (T-H) with high surface roughness ($Ra\;=\;1.94\;{\mu}m$) reduced electrode life. It was attributed to the higher contact resistance at the electrode-sheet interface in the presence of the high surface roughness. The increased electrode diameter decreased current density, therefore reducing weld electrode life due to small weld button size. When an increased electrode force was used, a significant increase in the electrode life was observed in welding of high surface roughness steel sheet. This study suggested that contact resistance at the electrode-sheet interface was the dominant factor, as compared to the sheet-sheet interface for determining electrode life in welding of surface roughness textured steel.

  • The complex effects of the machining parameters make it is difficult to control and predict surface roughness. The theoretical surface roughness observed during mechanical machining with a round tool is determined by the tool radius and pitch. However, it was revealed that other parameters, such as the depth of cut and cutting speed, also affect surface roughness. This study adapted the Taguchi method, which can analyze the effects of cutting parameters quantitatively with an efficient number of experiments, to optimize the parameters for better surface roughness. Experiments were designed based on an orthogonal array, and the quantitative effects on the surface roughness were analyzed using the S/N ratio. The surface roughness was affected by all parameters, especially the tool radius. The optimum cutting parameter values obtained in this study showed better surface roughness than the other combinations of the parameters.

  • In this study, researches were conducted as follows. First, as the basic experiment, the cutting speed, feedrate, and the depth of cut were set as the process parameters, and by setting the surface roughness as the factor of measurement for each of the combinations, and the analysis about cutting tendency of the material was conducted by proceeding the turning process of Co-Cr-Mo alloy. Second, by setting the feature of the surface roughness according to the 'turning processing condition' that was confirmed in the previous experiment, and by applying the Taguchi Method, the conditions that influence the features of the surface roughness according to the 'turning processing condition' of Co-Cr-Mo was analyzed, and also by measuring the surface roughness according to each of the 'cutting conditions', the optimal processing condition was generated. As the result of analysis, it was possible to understand that the factor that mostly affects the surface roughness was the cutting speed, followed by the dept of cutting and transfer speed, and as for the optimal processing condition, it was possible to find that the cutting speed was 5,000rpm, and the depth of cut was 0.1mm, and the feedrate was 0.003mm/rev, and the value of the surface roughness at this point is $0.197{\mu}m$.

  • The increase of consumer needs for quality metal cutting related products with more precise tolerances and better product surface roughness has driven the metal cutting industry to continuously improve quality control of metal cutting processes. In this paper, two different approaches are discussed. First, design of experiments (DOE) is used to determine the significant factors and then fuzzy logic approach is presented for the prediction of surface roughness. The data used for the training and checking the fuzzy logic performance is derived from the experiments conducted on a CNC milling machine. In order to obtain better surface roughness, the proper sets of cutting parameters are determined before the process takes place. The factors considered for DOE in the experiment were the depth of cut, feed rate per tooth, cutting speed, tool nose radius, the use of cutting fluid and the three components of the cutting force. Finally the significant factors were used as input factors for fuzzy logic mechanism and surface roughness is predicted with empirical formula developed. Test results show good agreement between the actual process output and the predicted surface roughness.

  • Current world aircraft industry studies on the precision of the product are in active progress. Particularly in terms of improving the quality of processed products in terms of the surface roughness of the dimensional accuracy, fatigue strength, and corrosion resistance, which affect a lot of research on surface roughness, has been investigated. In this study of aluminum alloy, 7075 aircraft aluminum is used in a cutting CNC lathe machine for the cutting speed and feed rate according to the cutting experiments that were conducted. Additionally, the machine tool of the cooling method soluble cutting oil, insoluble cutting oil by cooling, and cooling the workpiece by cutting surface roughness will be investigated. Through the method and soluble cutting oil coolant cooled by the cutting speed increases, the value of surface roughness showed a regular result. Tool nose radius of 0.8 mm than 0.4 mm picture of when approximately 50 of the surface roughness values were less.

  • In this study, the influence of various factors on surface roughness was investigated using the Taguchi experimental method through high-speed machining processing. Feed rate, pitch, tool diameter, and depth of cut are widely applied to high-speed machining conditions for mold production. Each of these factors was implemented and classified into three levels; then, after high speed machining, surface roughness was measured, the S/N ratio was analyzed, and the influence on the surface roughness of control factors was analyzed quantitatively by ANOVA. Using this information, a mathematical model for predicting surface roughness was derived from multiple regression analysis. This mathematical model enables the surface roughness value after high-speed machining to be predicted at the production stage, before machining, for a wide range of machining conditions.

  • The success of an implant is determined by its integration into the tissue surrounding the biomaterial. Surface roughness is considered to influence the behavior of adherent cells. The aim of this in vitro study was to determine the effect of surface roughness on Saos-2 osteoblast-like cells. Titanium disks, blasted with $75{\mu}m$ aluminum oxide particles and anodic oxidized and machined titanium disks were prepared. Saos-2 were plated on the disks at a density of 50,000 cells per well in 48-well dishes. After 1 hour, 1 day, 6 days cell numbers were counted. One day, 6 days after plating, alkaline phosphatase(ALPase) activity was determined. Compared to experimental groups, the number of cells was significantly higher on control group. The stimulatory effect of surface roughness on ALPase was more pronounced on the experimental groups than on control group. These results demonstrate that surface roughness alters proliferation and differentiation of osteoblasts. The results also suggest that implant surface roughness may play a role in determining phenotypic expression of cells.
