  • Implementing a home modification to enable elderly's safe and independent living is the key plan to realize their aging in place. South Korea in which had entered an aged society is not yet vitalized in home modification for the elderly compared to that of welfare-developed countries, and South Korea provides support that is limited to the low-income elderly. Therefore, this purpose of this study was to analyze the laws related to the home modification, the present condition of home modification support, the standards and guidelines in home modification, the support in house modification cost, and supporting organization and working force in the home modification. Through the analyzing process, this study examined the current situation and problems of institutional support in the home modification for elderly and the proposed plan for institutional improvement. The suggestions based on the results are as in the following. 1) Home modification support law(act or regulation) is required to be improved 2) Home modification support system correspondent to aging process should be provided regardless of their income levels. 3) Delicate plan standard and guideline are necessary for a process of implementing the home modification for the elderly. 4) Information on life behavior is in need for the implementation of elderly-customized home modification. 5) Cost for the home modification should be considered to cover by the Act on Long-Term Care Insurance for the Aged. 6) Housing Welfare Center and Housing Welfare Professional should be actively utilized for the home modification support institution and work force.

  • This study suggests the general support center with comprehensive services for the elderly. In general, the modifications of the elderly housing have a direct influence on the "Quality of life" and "Aging in place" for the elderly. But until now, the elderly housing modification has been carried out separately on the elderly welfare category. It is very inefficient and inconvenient for the elderly. Therefore, it is necessary to have a comprehensive organization that includes the implementation of modifications. To provide reasons for this insistence, this study analyzed the previous research, legal system guidelines, and others related things. And it researched the perception of the comprehensive institution and the need for housing modification through the recognition survey of the elderly and the early elderly. The study found that the current domestic legal system does not have an integrated system to carry out the entire process of applying and implementing the elderly housing modification. On the other hand, the results of the survey showed that the elderly hoped to introduce a comprehensive and user-friendly institution for housing modification.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the domestic and overseas home modification policies, and review the direction of domestic home modification policies to enable 'Aging In Place; AIP' and the competencies required of occupational therapist as and expert in home modification. In order to expand occupational therapy for domestic home modification and strengthen occupational therapist competency, it is required to establish a clear and practical home modification process that reflects the design and intervention of occupational therapy. Appropriate selection and standardization of the evaluation tools that identifies the needs of the elderly and reflects the characteristics of domestic housing types are also required. In addition, it is necessary to understand policies and systems, and endeavour to establish a relevant knowledge base for communication and cooperation with experts in other fields. In terms of the policy, there is a need for the home modification support system that allows the elderly to adapt to their aging regardless of their income level, beyond the existing support system, which was implemented mainly for low-income people and disabled. In addition, as in overseas cases, the efforts need to be made to provide various and efficient measures, such as support for barrier-free housing, expansion of the scope of support through cooperation between the national government and local governments, low-interest loans and tax reductions, and establishment of governance with organizations and institutions related to home modification services.

  • This study proposes a modification to the objective function of the support vector machine for the linearly non-separable case of a binary classifier yi ∈ {-1, 1}. The modification takes into account the position of each data item xi from its corresponding class centroid. The resulting optimization function involves the centroid mean vector, and the spread of data besides the support vectors, which should be minimized by the choice of hyper-plane β. Theoretical assumptions have been tested to derive an optimal separable hyperplane that yields the minimal misclassification rate. The proposed method has been evaluated using simulation studies and real-life COVID-19 patient outcome hospitalization data. Results show that the proposed method performs better than the classical linear SVM classifier as the sample size increases and is preferred in the presence of correlations among predictors as well as among extreme values.

  • Structural design is usually an optimization process. Numerous parameters such as the member shapes and sizes, the elasticity modulus of material, the locations of nodes and the support constraints can be selected as design variables. These variables are progressively revised in order to obtain a satisfactory structure. Each modification requires a fresh analysis for the displacements and stresses, and reanalysis can be employed to reduce the computational cost. This paper is focused on static reanalysis problem with modification of deleting some supports. An efficient reanalysis method is proposed. The method makes full use of the initial information and preserves the ease of implementation. Numerical examples show that the calculated results of the proposed method are the identical as those of the direct analysis, while the computational time is remarkably reduced.

  • This paper presents a simple modification technique of finite element model for dynamic analysis of linear/nonlinear structural system subjected to multiple support excitation. For the sake of verification of the proposed method, dynamic responses obtained by the present technique for a couple of linear and nonlinear structural systems were compared with those by a general-purpose structural analysis software which can deal with the multi-support analysis. The method presented in this paper is expected to be used for multiple support excitation analysis by means of a computer code without the capability of modeling the non-synchronous support motion.

  • Objectives: The relationships among discrimination, social support, and mental health have mostly been studied in minorities, and relevant studies in the general population are lacking. We aimed to investigate associations between discrimination and depressive symptoms in Korean non-minority young adults, considering the role of social support. Methods: In total, 372 participants who completed the psychological examinations conducted in the third wave of the Jangseong High School Cohort study were included. We used the Everyday Discrimination Scale to evaluate perceived discrimination and the Beck Depression Inventory-II to measure depressive symptoms. Social support was measured by the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. Multivariate linear regression was conducted to investigate associations between discrimination and depression, along with the effect modification of social support. We stratified the population by gender to investigate gender differences. Results: Perceived discrimination was significantly associated with depressive symptoms (${\beta}=0.736$, p<0.001), and social support was negatively associated with depression (${\beta}=-0.245$, p<0.001). In men, support from friends was the most influential factor (${\beta}=-0.631$, p=0.011), but no significant effect modification was found. In women, support from family was the most influential factor (${\beta}=-0.440$, p=0.010), and women with higher familial support showed a significantly diminished association between discrimination and depression, unlike those with lower family support. Conclusions: Discrimination perceived by individuals can lead to depressive symptoms in Korean young adults, and this relationship can may differ by gender and social support status.
