Estimation of the Number of Sources Based on Hypothesis Testing

  • Accurate and efficient estimation of the number of sources is critical for providing the parameter of targets in problems of array signal processing and blind source separation among other such problems. When conventional estimators work in unfavorable scenarios, e.g., at low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), with a small number of snapshots, or for sources with a different strength, it is challenging to maintain good performance. In this paper, the detection limit of the minimum description length (MDL) estimator and the signal strength required for reliable detection are first discussed. Though a comparison, we analyze the reason that performances of classical estimators deteriorate completely in unfavorable scenarios. After discussing the limiting distribution of eigenvalues of the sample covariance matrix, we propose a new approach for estimating the number of sources which is based on a sequential hypothesis test. The new estimator performs better in unfavorable scenarios and is consistent in the traditional asymptotic sense. Finally, numerical evaluations indicate that the proposed estimator performs well when compared with other traditional estimators at low SNR and in the finite sample size case, especially when weak signals are superimposed on the strong signals.

피로강도해석을 위한 용접잔류응력 이완의 정량적 평가 (A Quantitative Estimation of Welding Residual Stress Relaxation for Fatigue Strength Analysis)

  • It is well known that the strength and the fatigue life of welded steel components are affected extensively by welding residual stresses distributed around their weldments under not only monotonic but also cyclic loads. The externally applied loads are to be superimposed with the welding residual stresses, so that unexpected deformations and failures of the components might occur. These residual stresses are not kept constant, but relaxed or redistributed during in service. Under monotonic loads the relaxation takes place when the sum of external and welding residual stress exceeds locally the yield stress of material used. By the way, it is shown that under cyclic loads the welding residual stress is considerably relieved by the first or the early cycles of loads, and then gradually relaxed with increasing loading cycles. Although many investigations in this field have been carried out, the phenomenon and mechanism of the stress relaxation are still not clear, and there are few comprehensive models to predict amount of relaxed welding residual stress. In this study, the characteristics of the welding residual stress relaxation under monotonic and cyclic loads were investigated, and a model to predict quantitatively amount of welding residual stress relaxation was proposed.

고속 PIV계측에 의한 실린더 근접후류 공진 유동 가시화 (Visualization of Vortex Lock-on to Oscillatory Incident Flow in the Cylinder Wake Using Time-Resolved PIV)

  • Vortex lock-on or resonance behind a circular cylinder is visualized using a time-resolved PW when a single frequency oscillation is superimposed on the mean incident velocity. For vector processing, a cross-correlation algorithm in conjunction with a recursive correlation and interrogation window shifting techniques is used. Measurements are made of the Karmas and streamwise vertices in the wake-transition regime at Reynolds lumber 360. When lock-on occurs, the vortex shedding frequency is found to be half the oscillation frequency as expected from previous experiments. At the lock-on state, the Karman vortices are observed to be more disordered by the increased strength and spanwise wavelength of the streamwiee vortices, which lead? to a strong three-dimensional motion.

비연성 철근 콘크리트 중력 프레임에 의한 지진 보강 (Seismic Rehabilitation of Nonductile Reidorced Concrete Gravity Frame)

  • This paper represents results of an effort to seismically rehabilitate a 12-story nonductile reinforced concrete frame building. The frame located in the most severe seismic area, zone 4, is assumed to be designed and detailed for gravity load requirements only. Both pushover and nonlinear time-history analyses are carried out to determine strength, deformation capacity and the vulnerability of the building. The analysis indicates a drift concentration at the $1^{st}$ floor level due to inadequate strength and ductility capacity of the ground floor columns. The capacity curve of the structure, when superimposed on the average demand response spectrum for the ensemble of scaled earthquakes indicates that the structure is extremely weak and requires a major retrofit. The retrofit of the building is attempted using viscoelastic (VE) dampers. The dampers at each floor level are sized in order to reduce the elastic story drift ratios to within 1%. It is found that this requires substantially large dampers that are not practically feasible. With practical size dampers, the analyses of the viscoelastically damped building indicates that the damper sizes provided are not sufficient enough to remove the biased response and drift concentration of the building. The results indicate that VE-dampers alone are not sufficient to rehabilitate such a concrete frame. Concrete buildings, in general, being stiffer require larger dampers. The second rehabilitation strategy uses concrete shearwalls. Shearwalls increased stiffness and strength of the building, which resulted in reducing the drift significantly. The effectiveness of VE-dampers in conjunction with stiff shearwalls was also studied. Considering the economy and effectiveness, it is concluded that shearwalls were the most feasible solution for seismic rehabilitation of such buildings.

중심축력을 받는 콘크리트 충전강관 기둥의 역학적 거동 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Mechanical Properties of Concrete Filled Steel Tube Column under Centric Axial Load)

  • 본 연구는 콘크리트 충전강관을 고층 건물의 구조부재로 이용하기 위한 연구의 일환으로서 강관의 폭두께비, 세장비와 충전콘크리트의 강도를 주요 변수로 하여 강관이 콘크리트를 단순 구속하는 경우의 재하조건으로서 일련의 실험을 콘크리트 충전강관 기둥의 역학적인 거동 특성을 고찰하였다. 얻어진 결론을 요약하면 다음과 같다. (1)구속 콘크리트의 파괴양상은 단주의 경우 시험체 단부에서의 압괴에 의한 $45^{\circ}$정도의 사인장 파괴가 이루어졌으며 장주의 경우 횡방향 휨 파괴 양상을 나타내었다. (2)원형강관으로서 콘크리트를 구속함으로서 변형능력의 향상과 동시에 콘크리트의 연성 효과를 증대시킬 수 있었다. (3)강관의 세장비, 폭두께비, 콘크리트의 강도를 고려하여 콘크리트의 구속계수를 이용하여 강관에 의해 구속된 내부 콘크리트와 충전 강관 기둥의 최대내력 산정식을 제안하였다.

  • Lock-on phenomenon in the wake of a circular cylinder is investigated at the Reynolds number of 360 using direct numerical simulation (DNS). To induce lock-on, a streamwise velocity perturbation with a frequency of twice the natural shedding frequency is superimposed on the free stream velocity. The Reynolds stress distributions are investigated to analyze the streamwise force balance acting on the recirculation region and the results are compared with the previous experimental result. When the lock-on occurs, the pressure force on the recirculation region is shown to increase mainly due to the reversal of the Reynolds shear stress distribution, which is consistent with our previous results using PIV measurement. It is also shown that, with the lock-on, the strength of the primary vortices increases whereas that of the secondary vortices decreases significantly. Further, under the lock-on condition the wavelength of the secondary vortices increases by as much as 2.5 times.

Transverse cracking based numerical analysis and its effects on cross-ply laminates strength under thermo-mechanical degradation

  • Components manufactured from composite materials are frequently subjected to superimposed mechanical and thermal loadings during their operating service. Both types of loadings may cause fracture and failure of composite structures. When composite cross-ply laminates of type [$0_m/90_n]_s$ are subjected to uni-axial tensile loading, different types of damage are set-up and developed such as matrix cracking: transverse and longitudinal cracks, delamination between disoriented layers and broken fibers. The development of these modes of damage can be detrimental for the stiffness of the laminates. From the experimental point of view, transverse cracking is known as the first mode of damage. In this regard, the objective of the present paper is to investigate the effect of transverse cracking in cross-ply laminate under thermo-mechanical degradation. A Finite Element (FE) simulation of damage evolution in composite crossply laminates of type [$0_m/90_n]_s$ subjected to uni-axial tensile loading is carried out. The effect of transverse cracking on the cross-ply laminate strength under thermo-mechanical degradation is investigated numerically. The results obtained by prediction of the numerical model developed in this investigation demonstrate the influence of the transverse cracking on the bearing capacity and resistance to damage as well as its effects on the variation of the mechanical properties such as Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio and coefficient of thermal expansion. The results obtained are in good agreement with those predicted by the Shear-lag analytical model as well as with the obtained experimental results available in the literature.

Hydration Effect on the Intrinsic Magnetism of Natural Deoxyribonucleic Acid as Studied by EMR Spectroscopy and SQUID Measurements

  • The hydration effect on the intrinsic magnetism of natural salmon double-strand DNA was explored using electron magnetic resonance (EMR) spectroscopy and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetic measurements. We learned from this study that the magnetic properties of DNA are roughly classified into two distinct groups depending on their water content: One group is of higher water content in the range of 2.6-24 water molecules per nucleotide (wpn), where all the EMR parameters and SQUID susceptibilities are dominated by spin species experiencing quasi one-dimensional diffusive motion and are independent of the water content. The other group is of lower water content in the range of 1.4-0.5 wpn. In this group, the magnetic properties are most probably dominated by cyclotron motion of spin species along the helical π -way, which is possible when the momentum scattering time (${\tau}_k$) is long enough not only to satisfy the cyclotron resonance condition (${\omega}_c{\tau}_k$ > 1) but also to induce a constructive interference between the neighboring double helices. The same effect is reflected in the S-shaped magnetization-magnetic field strength (M-H) curves superimposed with the linear background obtained by SQUID measurements, which leads to larger susceptibilities at 1000 G when compared with the values at 10,000 G. In particular, we propose that the spin-orbital coupling and Faraday's mutual inductive effect can be utilized to interpret the dimensional crossover of spin motions from quasi 1D in the hydrate state to 3D in the dry state of dsDNA.

Effect of lock-on frequency on vortex shedding in the cylinder wake

Streamwise vortices at the lock-on and natural shedding states are observed, as well as the changes in the wake region with the change of the shedding frequency of lock-on state. When lock-on occurs, the vortex shedding frequency is found to be half the oscillation frequency as expected from previous experiments. At the lock-on state, the $K\acute{a}rm\acute{a}n$ vortices are observed to be more disordered by the increased strength and spanwise wavelength of the streamwise vortices, which leads to a strong three-dimensional motion. Recirculation and vortex formation region at the lock-on state is reduced as the oscillating frequency is increased. By comparing the Reynolds stresses at the lock-on and natural shedding states, $\bar{u'u'}\;and \;\bar{u'u'}$ at the lock-on state are concentrated on the shear layer around the cylinder. The $\bar{u'u'}\;at\;f_o/f_n=2.0$ has a large value near the centerline, compared with that of other cases. Considering the traces of maximum of u', in the wake region near the cylinder, wake width at the lock-on state is wider than that at the natural shedding state.

다중 집광성 UV-LED 경화형 코팅의 경화특성에 관한 연구 (A study on the curing characteristics of multi-concentrating UV-LED Curable Coating)

  • 본 논문은 기존의 단일 파장의 UV(Ultraviolet: 자외선)-LED(Light-Emitting Diode) 경화형 코팅 방법과 달리 UV 파장에서 동작되는 LED를 중첩한 다중 집광성 UV-LED 경화형 코팅의 경화 특성에 대해 연구하였다. 각각 365nm, 395nm, 420nm, 450nm 단일 파장의 UV-LED 광원을 선정하여 광원의 광속, 지향각 등 광 특성을 분석하였으며, 또한 UV-LED 광원의 파장별 경화 특성에 대해 분석을 통하여 복합 파장에 대한 LED를 최적화를 진행하였다. 다파장 UV 광원이 중첩되었을 경우 경화 성능 상태를 전산모의 실험을 통해 예측하였으며 실제 설계 및 제작을 하였다. 내부 고속경화도 향상을 위해 각각의 LED를 집광시켜 동일한 위치에서 다파장이 합성, 집광되는 multi-spot 방식 모듈을 제작하여 파장 조합 조건을 달리하여 경화제의 접착력 및 표면, 내부 경화도를 실험하였다. 경도계와 FT-IR 분석 장비를 이용하여 표면 경화와 내부 경화 상태를 비교 분석하였다. 그 결과, 단일 파장보다 UV-LED 4파장을 중첩한 multi-spot방식이 표면 및 내부 경화도의 특성이 높아짐을 확인할 수 있었다.
