We analyzed the temperature dependency of the AC losses in high temperature superconducting (HTS) coils. In the case of a short sample of an HTS tape, the magnetization loss at 4.2 K could be higher than the one at 77 K for a same transport current. It happens when the perpendicular magnetic field is above a certain magnitude. The AC loss characteristics of solenoidal coils have been analyzed at the temperatures of 65 K and 77 K. They were categorized by the aspect ratios. The operating current of a solenoid was normally set about 70 % of the critical current. An HTS solenoid with the same operating current of 77 K causes larger AC losses at 65 K in the most cases of the HTS solenoids. We also analyzed the AC loss characteristics due to the temperature variations for three types of superconducting magnetic energy storages. Two of them were solenoidal types and the other was toroidal type. The results showed the tendency for the coils to have higher AC losses at lower temperature with the same operating currents and scenarios.

We are developing a small-sized high temperature superconducting magnetic energy storage (HTS-SMES) magnet with the nominal storage capacity of 600 kJ, which provides electric power with high quality to sensitive electric loads. Critical current and N-value of a high temperature superconductor with large current, which was selected for the development of the 600 kJ HTS-SMES magnet, were investigated in various oblique external magnetic fields. Based on the critical current and N-value measured for the short sample conductor, we discussed the DC V - I characteristic of a model coil fabricated with the same conductor of 500 m. The results show that the measured critical current and N-value of the conductor for parallel field are constant in external magnetic fields less than about 0.2 T. However, for oblique fields, its critical current and N -value abruptly decrease in all external magnetic fields. Moreover, the measured critical current of the model coil well agrees with the numerically calculated one based on the DC V - I characteristic measured for the short sample conductor. This suggest that losses and critical currents for an HTS-SMES magnet made up of a high temperature superconductor with anisotropic characteristic are predictable from the data of a short sample conductor.

Wind power generation system (WPGS) of Ulleung Island causes frequency and voltage fluctuation due to wind speed variation during night time. Superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) system can overcome the fluctuations through the fast response time of energy charging and discharging. The SMES system should be connected to the terminal of the WPGS for frequency stabilization. To demonstrated the effectiveness of SMES system for power quality improvement, Ulleung Island power network was modeled in a real time digital simulator (RTDS). The RTDS-based simulation results of power quality improvement with SMES are investigated and discussed in detail.

Recently, small-sized superconducting magnetic storage($\mu$SMES) coils become commercially as an energy storage device for a power conditioner. In design and fabrication of the $\mu$SMES coils, to determine optimum current capacity of the superconducting(SC) conductors is one of the important things. We thus investigated the effect of conductor's current capacity, current density, and stability on the coil's maximum stored energy density in consideration of AC losses and switching device's capacities in a power converter. The results show that the smaller current capacity of the SC conductors is preferred for the $\mu$SMES coils but can increase their induced voltage excessively.
We are developing a small-sized superconducting magnetic energy storge ($\mu$SMES) magnet with the storage capacity of a few megajoules, which provides electric power with high quality to sensitive electric loads. A kA class superconductor with a high coppe $r^erconductor ratio was selected as a candidate conductor. The superconductor was tested in two points of view, which are basic and important in development of the $\mu$SMES magnet. First, stabilities of the superconductor against localized disturbances such as wire motions were estimated by using a wire heater. Second, the quench current characteristics for different charge rates were also tested. The stability data showed that the short heat pulses made the conductor more unstable. The superconductor had relatively high recovery currents ranging between 40% and 50% of its critical currents. The quench tests indicated that the quench currents of the conductor were independent of current ramp rates up to 3000 A/s and nearly equal to its cuitical current data.ta.

High temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets for large-capacity energy storage system need to be composed of toroid magnets with high energy density, low leakage magnetic fields, and easy installation. To realize such a large capacity of a toroid HTS magnet, an HTS cable with large current capacity would be preferred because of the limited DC link voltage and instantaneous high power required for compensation of the disturbance in the power grid. In this paper, the optimal operating strategies of the SMES for peak load reduction of the microgrid system were calculated according to the load variation characteristics, and the effect of compensation of the frequency change in microgrid with a SMES were also simulated. Based on the result of the simulation, key design parameters of SMES coil were presented for two cases to define the specification of the HTS cable with large current capacities for winding of HTS toroid coils, which will be need for development of the HTS cable as a future work.

Superconductivity has various applications in the whole industry such as the generation of high magnetic field for medical care and diagnosis, the lossless power transmission, environment-friendly vehicles and clean energy storage systems. This paper deals with the High-Tc superconducting(HTS) power supply using heater-triggered switch for the charging of the superconducting magnets. HTS superconducting power supply consists of two heaters, an electromagnet, and Bi-2223 solenoid and Bi-2223 pancake is used as a superconducting load, similar to real HTS magnet. The timing sequential control of two heaters and an electromagnet is an important factor to generate pumping- current in the Bi-2223 load. The thermal analysis of switching parts of the Bi-2223 solenoid according to the heater input was carried out. Based upon the analysis, the 0.8A of heater current were optimally derived. The maximum pumping current reached 1.7A.

Recently, utility network is getting more and more complicated and huge. In addition to, demands of power conversion devices which have non-linear switching devices are getting more and more increased. Consequently, according to the non-linear power semiconductor devices, current harmonics are unavoidable. Those current harmonics flow back to utility network and become one of the reasons which make the voltage distortion. On the other hands, voltage sag from sudden increasing loads is also one of the terrible problems inside of utility network. In order to compensate the current harmonics and voltage sag problem, AF(Active Filter) systems could be a good solution method and SMES(Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage) system is a very good promising source due to the high response time of charge and discharge. Therefore, the combined system of AF and SMES is a wonderful device to compensate both harmonics current and voltage sag. However, unfortunately SMES needs a superconducting magnetic coil. Because of the introduction of superconducting magnetic coil, quench problem caused by unexpected reasons is always existed. In case of discharge operation, quench is a significantly harmful factor according as it decreases the energy capacity of SMES. Therefore, this paper presents a decision method of the specification of the AF-SMES system considering internal fault condition. Especially, authors analyzed the change of the original energy capacity of SMES regarding to the size of resistance caused by quench of superconducting magnetic coil. Finally, based on this simulation, authors manufactured actual Active Filter System using DSP.

Since a microgrid has renewable energy sources, imbalance between power supply and power demand occurs in the islanded mode. In order to solve the imbalance, several energy storage systems (ESSs) such as bettary energy storage system (BESS), EDLC (electric double layer capacitor), flywheel, and SMES (superconducting magnetic energy storage) are generally used. Especially, their electrical characteristics are different. For efficient use of them, a coordinated control scheme is required. In this paper, a coordinated control scheme for using a Lead-acid BESS, a Lithium BESS, and a EDLC is designed to efficient frequency control for a microgrid in the islanded mode. The coordinated frequency control strategy is designed based on their electrical characteristics. The feasibility of the proposed coordinated frequency control strategy is verified through the simulation.
Cable-In-Conduit Conductor(CICC) is widely accepted as an advanced superconductor configuration for large scale applications such as tokamak fusion reactors, MAGLEV (MAGnetic LEVitation), and SMES (Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage). The stability of CICC cooled with supercritical helium can be very high if it is operated below a certain limiting current. This limiting current can be determined by Stekly type heat balance equation. The stability characteristic of CICC for AC operation is more complicated than that of DC because there are additional instability sources which are associated with local flux change. Ramp-rate limitation is a phenomenon discovered during US-DPC (United States-Demonstration Poloidal Coil) program, which showed apparent quench current degradation associated with high dB/dt. This paper describes recent experimental investigation results on the ramp-rate limitation and discusses current imbalance, induced current, current redistribution due to local quench of the strand in the cable.
