  • The present paper describes a conceptual design of a turbopump which employs a planetary gear system. In a launcher system, weight is one of the most important design factor. In turbopump systems using propellants such as kerosene, or methane, single shaft systems are employed because of simplicity. One of the main disadvantages of this system, however, is the same rotational speed of both pumps and a turbine which forces to operate under non-optimum condition. To operate each component in optimum or favorable rotational speeds, a planetary gear system seems to be the best choice when the compactness and efficiency of a turbopump system is considered. A conceptual design and feasibility of the turbopump system adopting a planetary gear system is suggested.

  • A marine turning gear controls the position of the piston-crank mechanism by rotating the flywheel of the marine engine at a low speed, which is the main auxiliary machine that enables the disassembly and maintenance of the engine. In this study, the safety factor for surface durability and tooth bending strength was improved by the design modification of the marine turning gear based on the spur planetary gear. Angular velocity, torque, and efficiency of the turning gear were measured using a reliability evaluation tester, and a multibody dynamics model for analysis corresponding to the test results was developed. Finally, it was confirmed that the design improvements improved the tooth surface damage of the sun gear in the 3rd reduction stage.

  • Gear train system test rig of power circulating type was fabricated, and systematic experiment for measuring dynamic characteristics of the planetary gear trains in the low speed region has been carried out using the test rig. The measured parameters are fillet strains of the sun gear and ring gear, carrier displacements, torques of the input and output shafts. The results are as follows : i) Even though the loading torque is constant, torque variation has been observed on the input and output hafts, ii) The variation of the torque has two frequency components, i.e. lower one of the input shaft rotation and higher one of the two teeth meshing, iii) The variation of the fillet strains shows the same tendency as that of the torque, iv) The loci of the carrier depend on the torque and rotational speed.

  • In the case of 4 wheel drive (4-WD) type car, power switching occurs to 4-WD by operating lever or switch that operates power switching device attached in transfer case which can operate motor by electric signal. So if the RPM of motor is high, power switching will not exactly occur and can cause damage to gear in transfer case according to circumstances. So in this study, we applied 2 level of planet gear type motor spindle of motor drive part of a power train. And conducted decelerating to increase torque to switch power safe and accurately. Also, we researched efficiency of gear by designing reduction gear ratio and gear type and by calculating contact stress and bending strength. Based on researched content, we made drive head of power switching device and a reduction module which uses type that uses motor spindle as sun gear and ring gear as cover.

  • One method for improving the torque capacity of the CVT is to use a split-powered CVT(SPCVT) to reduce the power transmitted into a continuously variable unit(CVU). A variable bridge SPCVT with two planetary gear units(PGUs), which are composed of a sun gear, a ring gear, and carrier and planetary gears, can minimize the power to the CVU. However, a SPCVT with a conventional CVT should possess a dual mode, which would allow the conventional CVT to be used at high speeds and an additional gear train to be used at low speeds. The inner-spherical CVU(ISCVU) with an inner and outer spherical contact mechanism developed in this study can cover the range from low to high speeds. The rated power and the overall speed ratios were 100 kW and $0.09{\sim}0.36$, respectively. Power efficiency was numerically calculated to be over 90% over the speed ratio range of $0.1{\sim}0.29$. The maximum shear stress at the two contact areas of the rotor pairs, the minimum life and the overall size were estimated to be 700 MPa, 276 kh and $350{\times}350{\times}400mm^3$, respectively. This study shows that an ISCVU and a variable bridge type PGU can realize the SPCVT with a single mode for a vehicle.

  • The structural safety of hydraulic winch drum and the gears are estimated by the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and the winch operation experiment. The mesh convergence test is performed and the applied force is the pressure on the drum converted from the rope tension in working condition. The stress of the drum calculated from the strain values of the winch operation experiment shows the agreement with that from the FEA. Most stress values are under the yield strength except for the small hole made for the wire rope fixation. The life of bearings in the drum is calculated using the life prediction formula with the reaction forces from the operation load. One of the two ball bearings shows the short life for impact condition, yet the real prototype winch system shows more life than the numerical value.

  • The aircraft flight control system controls an aircraft's direction and flying attitude, and actuators are key components of control systems. Actuators can be classified as Geared Rotary Actuator (GRA) and Ball Screw Actuator (BSA). GRA is used in mid-sized aircraft, and BSA is used in larger aircraft. A two-stage differential GRA model was suggested in this paper, and structural analysis and performance tests were performed. According to the analysis and experiment, the stiffness of the two-stage differential GRA was 17.57% higher than that of the conventional GRA, and the structural safety was improved.
