  • Soil-cement column is often used as a contaminant barrier. This study presents the results of experimental study performed to investigate the changes of properties of soil-cement column under the attack of acids. Sulfuric nitric, and ascetic acid were used as contaminants. Specimen were made of clayey and sandy soils with addition of cement and water Permeability of soil-cement decreased with time during permeability test. When significant amount of acid percolated the specimen, permeability increased and compressive strength decreased due to the dissolution and leaching of cement and its chemical reaction compounds. Sulfuric and nitric acid were more effective than ascetic acid in deteriorating soil-cement column. Amount of acid required to lower the pH of soil cement below 12 was calculated from the results of permeability tests. This leads to a conclusion that, under the conditions employed in this study, the chemical stability of soil-cement column could be maintained against acid attack for longer than generally accepted lifetime of contaminant barriers.

  • The overall objective of this research was to evaluate the effects of spraying sulfuric acid solution, and adding corn meal or molasses to reed canarygrass silage on digestibility of dry matter (DM) and fibrous components in ruminant. DM content of molasses or corn meal treated silages were higher than control. Whereas, sulfuric acid treated silage showed lower DM content compared with untreated control. Acid detergent fiber content was similar among treatments, but neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and hemicellulose concentration were higher in treated silages than those of control. Organic acids content were also increased in treated silages. In contrast, silage pH were lower in treated silages. Treated silages increased both rate and extent of DM and NDF in situ digestibility compared to control at all incubation times. Especially, 7 % molasses and 0.4 % sulfuric acid treated silages increased DM and NDF digestibility significantly after 12 hours of incubation compared with control. In nitro DM and NDF digestibility showed similar trend to in situ incubation. Also treated silages(mo1asses or sulfuric acid treated) incubated in situ had higher particle-associated carboxymethylcellulase activity throughout the incubation except 72 hours.

  • Aromatic pelybenzoxazoles(PBOs) display excellent thermal stability plus good solvent and chemical resistance. Wholly aromatic PBOs, in fact, are soluble only in strong acids(e.g., sulfuric, rmethanesulfonic, triflic, and polyphosphoric acids). However, fully heterocyclized polymers have shown some drawbacks in solubility and processing. This problem of processing is currently being exploited to obtain unusual combinations of physical properties in fibers and films. (omitted)

  • Various effects of simulated acid rain by $HNO_3$ and $H_2SO_4$ with pH 3.2, 4.2 and 5.6 were investigated in Melilotus suaveolens Ledeb, a biennial legume dominating the disturbed and poor soil vegetations. The nitric acid treatment of pH 3.2 resulted in 121% increase of the plant height compared to that of pH 5.6 during early growth, although 17% decrease was detected with the sulfuric acids. During 14 days of treatment, leaf biomass and chlorophyll content increased 168% and 133% with pH 3.2 nitric acid rain but decreased 20% and 38%, respectively, with sulfuric acid rain. Nitrogen content in various organs was also determined after 42 days of nitric acid treatment. It increased 480% and 387% by pH 3.2 and 4.2 in leaves, 212% and 214% in stems and 247% and 249% in roots. However, the same treatment with the sulfuric acid showed a considerable reduction in this content, indicating that the nitric acid was a nitrogen source. Nodule formation assayed revealed 15% decrease with pH 3.2 in contrast to 157% increase in pH 4.2, further suggesting an enhancement effect by the additional nitrogen source. Contrary to this, the nodule formation was reduced up to 43-71% by sulfuric acid rains. Specific nitrogen fixation activities of nodules estimated at pH 3.2, 4.2 and 5.6 nitric acid rain were 36.7, 42.8 and 47.3 ${\mu}mol\;C_2H_4{\cdot}g^{-1}\;fw\;nodule{\cdot}h^{-1}$, while those of sulfuric acid rain exhibited 1 nmol $C_2H_4{\cdot}plant^{-1}{\cdot}h^{-1}$ with pH 3.2, 177 with pH 4.2 and 179 with pH 5.6, yet it increased 2, 115 and 286 respectively corresponding to the three sulfuric acid concentrations. Further implications of the simulated acied rain were also discussed in the study.

  • Acid spill accidents are frequently occurring in Korea with increasing production, use, storage, and transport of acids, accompanying industrialization and economic growth. The acids introduced to the subsurface environments would eventually be neutralized by reactions with geomedia. However, the spatial and temporal extent to which the spilled acids would affect will be dependent on the characteristics of the geomedia exposed to the acids. In this work, sulfuric acid, the most used acid in Korea, was reacted with a set of model geomedia representative of the geology of Korea. The buffering capacity of the model geomedia was determined through batch-type experiments using pH changes as an indicator. X-ray diffraction was used to identify the mineral phases contributing to the acid neutralization. The results showed that sandstone had the largest acid neutralization capacity among the tested geomedia, while kaolinite had the smallest. The findings of this study would contribute to quantitatively assessing the impact of spilled acids on geomedia and hence to predicting the vulnerability of geomedia to the spilled acid.

  • Leaching experiments of anode slime were performed with several inorganic acids (HCl, $HNO_3$ and $H_2SO_4$) together with thiourea and thiosulfate solution to recover gold and silver. Gold was not dissolved at all into these inorganic acids in the absence of any oxidizing agents. At the same concentration of inorganic acid, the leaching of percentage of Ag was the highest in the sulfuric acid solution. The leaching percentage of silver increased with the increase of HCl concentration owing to the formation of $AgCl_2{^-}$. Copper, nickel and zinc except tin was almost dissolved in these inorganic acids but no tin was dissolved in nitric acid solution. Most of Au and Ag were dissolved into the mixture of sulfuric acid and thiourea solution. Thiosulfate could dissolve some silver from the anode slime but no gold was dissolved by this agent.

  • Precipitation samples were collected by the wet-only event sampling method at Seoul from September 1991 to April 1995. Concentrations of samples for the ion components($NO_3^-, NO_2^-, SO_4^{2-}, Cl^-, F^-, Na^+, K^+, Ca^{2+}, Mg^{2+}$ and $NH_4^+$) were measured in addition to pH and electric conductivity. During the sampling period, 182 samples were collected, but only 163 samples were identified as valid. The pH, calculated from the volume-weighted $H^+$ concentration, was found to be 4.7, indicating a relatively intensive acidity compared with data from other regions of the world, where acid deposition was known to be a problem. Above all, the concentration of non-seasalt sulfate was $84 \mu eq/L$, which was the highest compared to that measured in other regions of the world. The major acidifying ions in the precipitation at Seoul were identified as sulfate and nitrate except for chloride, because the Cl/Na ratio in the precipitation was close to the ratio in seawater. If all of the non-seasalt sulfate and nitrate existed in the form of sulfuric and nitric acids, respectively, the average pH in the precipitation was calculated as 3.7, lower than the measured value. Consequently, the difference between the calculated and measured pH suggest that the acidity of precipitation was neutralized by alkaline species, not due to the low contribution of an anthropogenic air pollutants to the precipitation. The equivalent concentration ratio of sulfate to nitrate was 3.5, which indicated that the contributions of sulfuric and nitric acids to the precipitation acidity were 78% and 22%, respectively.

  • This study was carried out to separate and identify the acidic compounds in tobacco leaves. Izmir tobacco leaves was extracted with isopropyl ether and the extract was concentrated. The concentrate was extracted with 6% NaHCO3 aqueous solution. The aqueous extract was acidified with sulfuric acid, and extracted with diethyl ether. The acidic material was fractionated on silicic acid column using a benzene-methanol mixture with a stepwise increasing methanol concentration. The resulting fractions were esterified with diazomethane, and then identified by GC, GC/MS using SPB -5 fused silica capillary column. Most of acidic compounds in Izmir tobacco leaves were elected from fraction B which was benzene-methanol(98 : 2) mixture on silicic acid column chromatography. The identified acidic compounds of Izmir tobacco leaves were 18 saturated acids, 8 unsaturated acids, 5 dicarboxylic acids, 13 aromatic acids and 7 terpenoid acids. The major acidic compounds of lzmir tobacco leaves were 2- methylbutanoic, 3-methyl butanoic, 3- methylpentanoic, hexanoic, nonanedioic, phenylacetic, benzoic, 4- methoxybenzoic, 3, 5- dimethoxybenzoic, methoxycinnamic and 3, 4- dimethoxycinnamic acid. Key Words : Izmir tobacco, Acidic compounds, GC/MS.

  • The ratio of saccharification and formation of furans during the acid hydrolysis of agar with oxalic acid and sulfuric acid were examined base on the contents of the agar and acids. The ratio of saccharification in oxalic acid appeared to be 51~59% somewhat higher than 49~61% of sulfuric acid. Formation of the furans during the acid hydrolysis increased proportional to the contents of agar and acid. The relative formation ratio was high 10~47% for furfural (FUR) and 15~29% for hydroxy-methyl furfural (HMF) in 0.5~1.25% sulfuric acid rather than those of oxalic acid. When comparing the removal efficiency of the furans using an alkali treatment, steam stripping and hydrophobic resins, FUR was eliminated 60% by the alkali treatment, 62~90% by steam stripping and 71~75% by Amberlite XAD4 and 7HP, while HMF was removed to low levels of 10.5%, 4~17% and 13~25%, respectively. The loss of reducing sugar was also observed in process of the removal of furans, and the loss rate was the level of 2~4% in alkali treatment, 11~16% in steam stripping and 7~9% in Amberlite resins.
