A Study on the Simulation of Toluene Recovery Process using Sulfolane as a Solvent (Sulfolane 용매를 이용한 톨루엔 회수공정의 모사에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, computer modeling and simulation works were performed to obtain nearly pure toluene product from toluene containing non-aromatic compounds using sulfolane as a solvent through an extractive distillation process. NRTL liquid activity coefficient model was adopted for phase equilibrium calculations and Aspen Plus release 12.1, a commercial process simulator, was used to simulate the extractive distillation process. In this study, it was concluded that the toluene product with a purity of 99.8 percent by weight and a recovery of 99.65 percent was obtained through an extractive distillation process.

Effects of Electrochemical Reduction Reactions on the Biodegradation of Recalcitrant Organic Compounds (ROCs) and Bacterial Community Diversity

  • Five bacterial species, capable of degrading the recalcitrant organic compounds (ROCs) diethyleneglycol monomethylether (DGMME), 1-amino-2-propanol (APOL), 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP), diethyleneglycol monoethylether (DGMEE), tetraethyleneglycol (TEG), and tetrahydrothiophene 1,1-dioxide (sulfolane), were isolated from an enrichment culture. Cupriavidus sp. catabolized $93.5{\pm}1.7$ mg/l of TEG, $99.3{\pm}1.2$ mg/l of DGMME, $96.1{\pm}1.6$ mg/l of APOL, and $99.5{\pm}0.5$ mg/l of NMP in 3 days. Acineobacter sp. catabolized 100 mg/l of DGMME, $99.9{\pm}0.1$ mg/l of NMP, and 100 mg/l of DGMEE in 3 days. Pseudomonas sp.3 catabolized $95.7{\pm}1.2$ mg/l of APOL and $99.8{\pm}0.3$ mg/l of NMP. Paracoccus sp. catabolized $98.3{\pm}0.6$ mg/l of DGMME and $98.3{\pm}1.0$ mg/l of DGMEE in 3 days. A maximum $43{\pm}2.0$ mg/l of sulfolane was catabolized by Paracoccus sp. in 3 days. When a mixed culture composed of the five bacterial species was applied to real wastewater containing DGMME, APOL, NMP, DGMEE, or TEG, 92~99% of each individual ROC was catabolized within 3 days. However, at least 9 days were required for the complete mineralization of sulfolane. Bacterial community diversity, analyzed on the basis of the TGGE pattern of 16S rDNA extracted from viable cells, was found to be significantly reduced in a conventional bioreactor after 6 days of incubation. However, biodiversity was maintained after 12 days of incubation in an electrochemical bioreactor. In conclusion, the electrochemical reduction reaction enhanced the diversity of the bacterial community and actively catabolized sulfolane.

  • Ionic liquids (ILs) have been extensively investigated as promising alternatives to conventional organic solvents such as sulfolane and N,N-dimethylformamide for the selective extraction of aromatic hydrocarbons from the $C_6-C_{10}$ hydrocarbon mixtures produced from the cracking processes of naphtha and light oils. The most important advantage of ILs over conventional organic solvents is that they are immiscible with aliphatic hydrocarbons, and thus the back extraction of ILs from the raffinate phases and top hydrocarbon-rich layers is not necessary. In this paper, a brief review on the state of the art in the utilization of ILs for aromatics separation is presented.

  • The relative viscosities and the osmotic coefficients of alkaline metal iodides (NaI, KI, RbI, CsI) in methanol, ethanol, dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), and sulfolane (TMS) have been measured by Ubbelohde viscometer and vapor pressure osmometry at 45 ∼ $120^{\circ}C.$ The order of A and B coefficients in viscosity for alkaline metal iodides are MeOH > EtOH > TMS > DMSO, and TMS > EtOH > DMSO > MeOH. dB/dT values for the alkaline metal iodides are in the order of NaI > KI > RbI > CsI in the protic solvents, while those for the aprotic solvents are in the reverse order. The order of the osmotic coefficients for the alkaline metal iodides is EtOH > DMSO > MeOH > TMS.

  • 본 논문에서는 온실가스인 이산화탄소를 연소전 조건에서 회수하기 위해 DMSO, Sulfolane, PEG를 이용하여 이산화탄소 흡수특성을 조사하였다. 회분식 기-액 평형반응기를 이용하여 고정압력에서 온도변화에 따른 용해도와 재생성, 초기흡수속도를 측정하였다. 실험결과 용해도의 경우 PEG가 뛰어났으며 초기흡수속도의 경우 DMSO가 우수하였다.

Groundwater Monitoring Network Design by Employing CPT Rig and BAT Sampling Techniques

  • This study was conducted to delineate plume occurred in hazardous waste disposal site. At first, CPT (Cone Penetrometer Test) rig and HydroPunch were used to collect depth-discrete groundwater samples in concerned area. However, it was not capable of sampling the groundwater due to the cone refusal where the residual clay are layered at nominal depth through the aquifer. Alternatively, a number of temporary wells were installed after each of locations was penetrated using a modified steel cone functioned by CPT rig. The samples taken from those of wells were characterized by GCMS and GCFID, which revealed that sulfolane and thiolane were mainly presented. Subsequent analyses performed for the samples taken from permanent nest piezometers consistently demonstrated that possible plume boundary can be presented in the study area where contaminants were found as low as detection limit or levels of not-detectable.

  • Poly (ether sulfone)s with Bisphenol-TP and Bisphenol-AF were prepared with Bisphenol-TP <4,4-dihydroxy tetraphenyl methane>, 4-Fluorophenyl sulfone, and Bisphenol-AF <4,4-(hexafluoroisopropylidene) diphenol> using Potassium carbonate in Sulfolane at $210^{\circ}C$. Sulfonated PBTP-AF were obtained by reaction of Chlorosulfuric acid with copolymers. A series of copolymers were studied by $^1H$-NMR spectroscopy, Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC), and Thermo Gravimetric Analysis (TGA). Sorption experiments were conducted to observe the interaction of polymers with water and methanol.
