An experimental study is performed to analyze flow structures behind a local suction/blowing in a flat-plate turbulent boundary layer, The local forcing is given to the boundary layer flow by means of a sinusoidally oscillating jet issuing from a thin spanwise slot at the wall. The Reynolds number based on the momentum thickness is about $Re_{\theta}=1700$. The effects of local forcing are scrutinized by altering the forcing frequency $(0.011{\leq}f^+{\leq}0.044)$. The forcing amplitude is fixed at $A_0=0.4$. It is found that a small local forcing reduces the skin friction, and this reduction increases with the forcing frequency. A phase-averaging technique is employed to capture the coherent structures. Velocity signals are decomposed into a periodic part and a fluctuating part. An organized spanwise vortical structure is generated by the local forcing. The larger reduction of skin friction for the higher forcing frequencies is attributed to the diminished adverse effect of the secondary vortex. An investigation of the random fluctuation components reveals that turbulent energy is concentrated near the center of vortical structures.

This paper deals with the noise evaluation technique of a reciprocating air-compressor and its noise reduction. The reciprocating air-compressors are widely used in the small, medium sized industrial firms, and lots of their employees are affected and irritated by their noise in the workplace. Thus, noise control actions should be taken appropriately by considering the hearing loss due to the occupational noise exposure. Lead-wrapping techniques are employed to identify the contribution of principal noise sources which are generally known as motor, belts, suction/discharge valves, moving pistons, and flow-induced noise caused by edges or discontinuities along the flow path e.g. expansions, contractions, junctions and bends etc .. As a result, main noise sources of the air-compressor can be categorized by the suction/discharge noise, valve noise, and compressed-air tank noise. Based on the investigations, mufflers are designed to reduce both the suction/discharge noise and the compressed-air tank noise. Instead of the conventional valve plate, polyethylene resin is used as a new one for the reduction of valve impact noise. In addition, attempts are made to reduce the valve noise propagation to the cylinder head and the compressor tank by using the insulation casings. As a result of the countermeasure plans, it can be achieved that the noise reduction of the air-compress is up to 10dB.
In order to acquire hydraulic characteristics for unsaturated layers, water retention tests were performed and compared by using the evaporation method, volumetric pressure plate extractor (VPPE) and chilled-mirror dew point method. The evaporation and chilled-mirror method are currently developed experimental technology and measure the water retention curve of unsaturated soils quickly and accurately. In the evaporation and VPPE method, the water retention has been measured and compared until 100kPa matric suction and consequently the result of the evaporation method could be verified. In the chilled-mirror method, the water retention has been measured until high level of matric suction and the overall shape of water retention curves could be obtained. As a result of water retention tests, the representative water retention curves were obtained and the applicability of each test method was discussed. Using both the evaporation and chilled-mirror methods, the soil water retention curve can be acquired reasonably for the whole range of matric suction.
This study has obtained Soil Water Retention Curve (SWRC) of the unsaturated soil from the volumetric pressure plate extractor test and the triaxial compression tests was also conducted. By using the rainfall data measured in the site the seepage analysis of unsteady flow was performed with the program of SEEP/W in Geostudio 2007 and stability of the slope was analyzed with SLOPE/W program. Results of analyses show that shear strength of the unsaturated soil increases with the increase of matric suction. And it was also found that the net volumetric stress and the apparent cohesion increased with the matric suction. The seepage analysis of rainfall represents that the increasing rate of negative pore pressure at the zone of large negative pore pressure is appeared to be high even though lower rainfall intensity, but this tendency declines with ground depth. The stability analysis of slope was carried out for the actual plane of failure with the data representing the field condition. The factor of safety thus calculated was about unity (1.0) or just below, which means that the adopted method of analysis is in good agreement with the field condition.

Vortical systems are considered a main feature to sustain turbulence in a boundary layer through interaction. Such turbulent structures result in frictional drag and erosion or vibration in engineering applications. Research for controlling turbulent flow has been actively carried out, but in order to show the effect of vortices in a turbulent boundary layer, it is necessary to clarify the mechanism by which turbulent energy is transferred. For this purpose, it is convenient to demonstrate and capture phenomena in a laminar boundary layer. Therefore, in this study, the interactions of disturbed flow around a hemisphere on a flat plate in laminar flow were analyzed. In other words, a street of hairpin vortices was generated following a wake region formed after flow separation occurred over a hemisphere. Necklace vortices surrounding the hemisphere also appeared due to a strong adverse pressure gradient that brought high momentum fluid into the wake region thereby leading to an increase in the frequency of hairpin vortices. To mitigate the effect of these necklace vortices, local suction control was applied through a hole in front of the hemisphere. Flow visualization was recorded to qualitatively determine flow modifications, and hot-film measurements quantitatively supported conclusions on how much the power of the hairpin vortices was reduced by local wall suction.

Turbulent flow analysis around a wind turbine blade was performed to evaluate the power performance of offshore wind turbine. Fluent package was utilized to solve the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations in non-inertial rotating coordinates. The realizable k-$\varepsilon$ model was used for turbulence closure and the grid system combining structured and unstructured grids was generated. In the first, lift and drag forces of 2-D foil section were calculated and compared with existing experimental data for the validation. Then torque and thrust of the wind turbine blade having NACA 4-series sections were calculated with fixed pitch angle and rpm. Tip speed ratio was varied by changing wind speed. In the next, three kinds of end plate were attached at the tip of blade in order to increase the power of the wind turbine. Among them the end plate attached at the suction side of the blade was found to be most effective. Furthermore, performance analysis with tilt angle and rake was also performed.

In order to study hydraulic properties and mechanical properties on unsaturated region, soil-water retention curve was obtained for suction plate method and pressure plate method, respectively. To investigate permeability of unsaturated soil and soil-water retention curve at the same time, unsaturated permeability tests using an improved Richard's method were performed on Joomoonjin Sand. These experimental results were compared with those by empirical equations. The relationship between air entry value and saturated permeability of filter was obtained for selecting a proper filter in unsaturated soil tests.
Hysteresis is a common feature exhibited in hydraulic properties of an unsaturated soil. This study focuses on hysteresis observed in a compacted weathered granite subgrade soils based on the pressure plate laboratory tests. It was found that the Soil-Water Characteristics Curve of a soil is hysteretic and unique. The results also show that the wetting and drying curves predicted using the Fredlund and Xing model is quite close to the laboratory-measured results. For a specific matric suction, water content or coefficient of permeability on a wetting curve is always lower than those found on a drying curve.

The wake behavior of extended flat plate and serration in the trailing edge of S809 airfoil is presented in this experimental study using wind tunnel testing. The clustering of wind turbines in wind parks has recently been a pressing issue, due to the expected increase in power output and deciding the number of wind turbines to be installed. One of the prominent factors which influence the performance of the subsequent wind turbines is the downstream wake characteristics. A series of wind tunnel investigations were performed to assess the downstream near wake characteristics of the S809 airfoil at various angles of attack corresponding to the Reynolds Number Re = 2.02 × 105. These experimental results revealed the complex nature of the downstream near wake characteristics featuring substantial asymmetry arising out of the incoherent flow separations prevailing over the suction and the pressure sides of the airfoil. Based on the experimental results, it is found that the wake width and the downstream velocity ratio decrease with an increase in the angle of attack. Nonetheless, the dissipation length and downstream velocity ratio increases proportionally in the downstream direction. Additionally, attempts were made to understand the physical nature of the near wake characteristics at 1C, 2C, 3C and 4C downstream locations.
Traditional vacuum cleaner adoptsa highly rotating centrifugal impeller for generating suction region at lower pressure. The rotational speed is very high at 35,000 to 40,000 rpm and accessory structure such as a circular brush at the base plate of the cleaning devices is equipped for gathering dusts. Highly rotating impeller is effective for low pressure generation but causes noise problems. Recently, the unwanted noise is removed by installation of air-pump, instead of a centrifugal impeller, and the internal flows of the modified system are estimated in numerical and experimental approach, respectively.
