  • GIS is linked with Numerical Model(PM5) for the effective conservation and management of groundwater resources. All the relevant system was systematically constructed to analyze the field status by means of precise understanding of the surface and subsurface environment and by accumulating large amounts data and attribute data into developed system. The necessity of integrated management of the groundwater information was demonstrated and the general direction of the construction of groundwater management system was suggested. The proposed system will guide a method for the rational decisions of groundwater development via the establishment of the appropriate database management and accurate prediction of future change.

  • This paper presents preliminary laboratory investigations on the electrokinetic (EK) remediation coupled with permeable reactive barrier (PRB) system. Atomizing slag was adopted as a PRB reactive material for remediation of groundwater contaminated with inorganic and/or organic substances. A series of laboratory experiments were performed with variable conditions such as (i) type of contaminant, (ii) applied electric field strength, (iii) processing time, and (iv) the application of PRB system. From the preliminary investigations, the coupled technology of EK with PRB system would be effective to remediate contaminated grounds without the extraction of pollutants from subsurface due to the reactions between the reactive materials and contaminants.

  • This study was performed to develop an information processing system for the sound conservation of soil and groundwater resources. The system contains the geographic information system, and the numerical model of groundwater flow and contamination. Numerical models (MODFLOW,MOC3D) and GIS (ArcView) were integrated for the construction of an integrated management system of subsurface environment. The developed system was applied to the management of three mineral water companies located in clean mountain area. The impact of pumping over the overall catchment basin was modeled using the developed system for the decision of future management criteria.

  • Protection of groundwater resources from contamination has been of increasing concern throughout the past decades. In practice, however, groundwater monitoring is performed based on the experience and intuition of experts or on the convenience. In dealing with groundwater contamination, we need to know what contaminants have the potential to threat the water quality and the distribution and concentration of the plumes. Monitoring of the subsurface environment through remote geophysical techniques or direct sampling from wells can provide such information. Once known, the plume can be properly menaged. Evaluation of existing methodologies for groundwater monitoring network design revealed that one should select an appropriate design method based on the purpose of the network and the avaliability of field information. Integer programming approach, one of the general purpose network design tools, and a cost-to-go function evaluation approach for special purpose network design were tested for field applicability. For the same contaminated aquifer, two approaches resulted in different well locations. The amount of information, however, was about the same.

  • Estimations of regional stress are demonstrated in this paper. Firstly, regional stress is defined and the characteristics of regional stress are then discussed based on the local stresses measured by the Compact Conical-ended Borehole Overcoring (CCBO) technique and the results from the earthquake focal mechanism. Secondly, the regional stresses are estimated by a back analysis of three-dimensional finite element models, using the local stresses measured by the CCBO and hydraulic fracturing.

  • Numerical and laboratory studies have been conducted to test the ability of Electrical Resistance Tomography-a technique used to map the electrical resistivity of the subsurface-to delineate contaminant plumes. Two-dimensional numerical models were created to investigate survey design and resolution. Optimal survey design consisted of both downhole and surface electrode sites. Resolution models revealed that while the bulk fluid flow could be outlined, small-scale fingering effects could not be delineated. Laboratory experiments were conducted in a narrow glass tank to validate theoretical models. A visual comparison of fluid flow with ERT images also showed that, while the bulk fluid flow could be seen in most instances, fine-scale effects were indeterminate.

  • The effect of the heavy metals copper and cadmium on the natural populations of surface microlayer and subsurface water was investigated. Two microbiological parameters, number of colony-forming bacteria and $^{14}C-glucose$ uptake rate, were evalated. The two natural bacterial populations showed different tolerances of the heavy metals. The ingibition of bacterial growth and activity occurred more strongly in the 1m-depth samples than in neuston populations. The results support the existence of autochthonous bacterioneuston populations in marine environment.

  • Objectives of this study are : 1) to utilize capillary theory and obtain pore-size distribution profiles from moisture-suction relationships using Laplace theory. 2) to investigate the behavior of Light Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids(LNAPLs) in the subsurface environment and to develop several predictive relationships which can be used to assess the effectiveness of various LNAPLs remediation technologies. The relationship to predict pore-size distribution function expressed in differencial equation is found by using capillary theory. Also, experiments are conducted to : the various LNAPLs subjected to vadose zone drainage, groundwater table drainage, waterflooding with surfactants. The experiments are performed with #2 heating oil, jet fuel. and kerosene. Several relationships have been derived describing the effect of various properties and process parameters on the LNAPL residual saturation.

  • Surfactants have been extensively considered for decontamination of the subsurface polluted with hydrophobic organic compounds. In order to investigate the effect of molecular structures on the solubilization of hydrophobic organic compounds, solubility enhancement of two PAHs in solutions of three different surfactants-conventional, dianionic, and gemini. The batch experimental results showed that the gemini was the most effective and the dianionic was the least, indicating that organic carbon content of the surfactants was the major factor which determines the sorption capacity of surfactant aggregates in water, unlike some of the previous reports.

  • Solubilization and partitioning of naphthalene was investigated in an aqueous system containing soils and surfactants. The environmental behavior of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) was mainly governed by their solubility and partitioning properties on soil media in a subsurface system. In surfactant-enhanced remediation systems, surfactants might be an additional variable. a natural soil ,silica and kaolinite were tested as soil media. two nonionic surfactants, Triton X-100 and Hydropropy1-$\beta$-cyclodextrin (HPCD) were employed for naphthalene solubilization. Naphthalene showed linear on natural soil while non-linear sorption on silica and kaolinite. Soils have higher sorption capacity for Triton X-100 than HPCD indicating Triton X-100 formed ad-micelle on the soil surface. Desorption study showed a hysterysis and reversible desorption. The partitioning coefficient(K$_{D}$) of naphthalene was increased as the concentration of surfactant was increased. (below CMC), however, the coefficient was decreased above CMC. This indicates that naphthalene is partitioned into the micelles and the partition occurs competitively on both ad-micelle and free micelles as surfactant concentration increases. Therefore, the target compounds to be dissolved into aqueous phase in a surfactant enhanced remediation system might be highly partitioned on to the ad-micelle resulting in an adverse effect rather increased solubilization would be achieved.d.
