  • Structural Dynamic Modification(SDM) is a technique to improve structure's dynamic characteristics by adding and removing substructures or changing material properties and shape of structures. This paper describes SDM techniques applied to a large structure with too many DOFs. The goal of this SDM technique is to modify a targe structure efficiently for its natural frequencies to avoid excitation frequencies. In this case, models reduced by Component Mode Synthesis(CMS) method that is a coupling technique are used to analyze a large structure efficiently. This paper considers a helicopter deck model with 55,000 DOFs as an application.

  • In this paper, a sensitivity analysis technique is presented for performing effective structural optimization of bus system. Design sensitivities are analyzed on natural frequency of bus substructures using super-element. Vibration modes of substructure, which large affect on the global vibration mode of bus B.I.W., are found through the sensitivity analysis using the chain rule. And design variables, which are determined from the sensitivity analysis, are changed through optimum design.

  • Complex systems are made of many subsystems, those are developed and manufactured by many part companies. Even though the information for a part is necessary to analyze the performance of the other part, it is not so easy to get the information for that part from other companies due to many reasons like security or compatibilities. If the modal parameters of a system between the connecting points are available, we can reconstruct a reduced model for that system in a physical coordinate not in a generalized coordinate. The assemble of the equations of motion for the main system and the reduced equations of motion for the connected system can give a response of the main system considering the effects of connected systems. The results show that the proposed method can give the response of a system accurately. The rule for the selection of modes is to use the fundamental modes whose natural frequencies are low.

  • The examined model consists of two substructures linked by a right angle rigid line joint. One element is a wall loaded externally along its upper edge by an uneven vertical load. The other element, defined as a plate, is not loaded. Stresses and displacements in the vicinity of the joint are analysed, considering the lateral distribution which leads to three-dimensional effects. The proposed solution combines classical approach with numerical means, using appropriate stress distribution polynomial functions along the joint. Space structure constructions supply cases of interest.

  • In the present study, we investigate the effects of long-term heat treatment at elevated temperatures on the mechanical softening of the Mn-Mo-Ni low-alloy steel. The influence of long-term heat treatment on microstructure and mechanical strength was evaluated. To simulate the long-term material degradation, heat treatment test was interrupted at several stages up to 10,000 hours in an electric furnace. The Mn-Mo-Ni low-alloy steel shows a typical bainitic phase, which consists of a well-developed lath substructure with fine precipitates along the lath boundaries. However, these fine precipitates were redissolved into the matrix with long-term heat treatment, and then the lath substructures were recovered. Consequently, ultimate tensile strength and yield strength decreased during long-term heat treatment showing a mechanical softening phenomenon.

  • Recent submillimeter observations of ALMA reveal that many protoplanetary disks contain substructures like gaps or rings. The disk-planet interaction is believed to be the most likely gap formation scenario, and most previous numerical work attempted to constrain the planet mass using the density profiles of gas in the gaps. Since the dust and gas distributions likely differ from each other in protoplanetary disks, however, perturbed rotational velocities that directly probe the gas would give a more reliable estimate to the planet mass. In this work, we run two-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations to measure the amplitudes and widths of rotational velocity perturbations induced by planets with different mass. We present the parametric relations of the gap widths and depths as functions of the planet mass and disk properties. We also apply our relations to HD 163296 to infer the masses of embedded planets.

  • Extremely metal-poor (EMP; [Fe/H] < -3.0) stars are thought to be genuine second-generation of stars because they were born from relatively pristine gas chemically enriched by one or two supernovae. So, the EMP stars presumably originated from outside the Milky Way (MW) are important tracers for the early chemical evolution and assembly history of the MW. In this study, we present the preliminary results on the early assembly history of the MW inferred by associating the dynamical properties of our EMP stars with those of known substructures in the MW. We also explore the star formation history of the progenitor galaxies of our EMP stars by investigating the elemental abundances of the EMP stars associated with the substructure.

  • Abell 1240 is a merging galaxy cluster hosting prominent, symmetric double radio relics. To constrain its merging history, we provide the first weak-lensing analysis of the dark matter distribution of the Abell 1240 field with Subaru/Suprime-Cam observations after robustly addressing instrumental systematics. We also investigate the cluster galaxy distributions, combining our new MMT/Hectospec observations and the spectroscopic redshifts from the literature. Both weak-lensing mass reconstruction and galaxy distribution show that Abell 1240 consists of two subclusters stretched north to south between the double radio relics. We quantify the significance of the substructures and present their mass estimates. Finally, we discuss a merging stage of Abell 1240 with the current weak-lensing results and the radio relic priors.

  • This study is a simulative Paper on scour around piers. As materials on the river bed have been changing through erosion, transportation and accumulation, so does the waterway's section. Analyzing them through the BOSS SMS. this study deals with the local-scour characters with the change of shapes in row piers which have been built in the identical direction of water flow.

  • Although the investigation on the effect of loaded out-of-plane braces on the values of the stress concentration factor (SCF) in offshore tubular joints has been the objective of numerous research works, a number of quite important cases still exist that have not been studied thoroughly due to the diversity of joint types and loading conditions. One of these cases is the multi-planar tubular KK-joint subjected to axial loading. Tubular KK-joints are among the most common joint types in jacket substructure of offshore wind turbines (OWTs). In the present research, data extracted from the stress analysis of 243 finite element (FE) models, verified against available experimental data, was used to study the effects of geometrical parameters on the chord-side SCFs in multi-planar tubular KK-joints subjected to axial loading. Parametric FE study was followed by a set of nonlinear regression analyses to develop three new SCF parametric equations for the fatigue analysis and design of axially loaded multi-planar KK-joints.
