Background: Tobacco smoking is considered a risk factor for cervical cancer development due to the presence of tobacco based carcinogenic metabolites in cervical cells of female smokers. In this study, we investigated the role of the T3801C (MspI) polymorphism of CYP1A1, a gene encoding an enzyme necessary for the initiation of tobacco based carcinogen metabolism, on cervical cancer risk. The T to C substitution may alter CYP1A1 activities, potentially elevating cervical cancer risk. Since results of gene-disease association studies vary according to the study population, the multi-ethnic population of Malaysia provides an excellent representative cohort for identifying and comparing the cervical cancer risk among the 3 major ethnics in Southeast Asia in relation to CYP1A1 MspI polymorphism. Materials and Methods: A total of 195 Thin Prep Pap smear samples from HPV negative and cancer free females were randomly selected as controls while 106 formalin fixed paraffin embedded samples from females with invasive cervical cancer were randomly selected for the cases group. The polymorphisms were identified using restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) PCR. Results: We found no significant associations between CYP1A1 MspI polymorphism and cervical cancer in the general Malaysian female population. However, upon ethnic stratification, the variant C/C genotype was significantly associated with a 4.66-fold increase in cervical cancer risk in Malay females (95% CI= 1.21-17.9; p=0.03). No significant association was observed in the Chinese and Indian females. Additionally, there were no significant associations in the dominant model and allele frequency model analysis in both the general and ethnically stratified female population of Malaysia. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that the C/C genotype of CYP1A1 MspI polymorphism is associated with the development of cervical carcinoma in the Malay females of Malaysia.
Clinopyroxene in the Geodo mine belongs to diopside-hedenbergite series. It is widely distributed throughout the mine area together with garnet and is also closely related with Fe-mineralization. Clinopyroxenes in the Geodo mine including two samples from the sangdong and Ulchin Mines are studied using polarized microscope, EPMA, XRD, and IR spectroscopy for occurrence, chemistry, structure, and crystal chemistry. Especially, variations in unit-cell parameters are examined in relation with the substitution scheme between Fe and Mg cations. Clinopyroxenes in the Geodo mine occur in both endoskarn and exoskarn zone. It is mostly anhedral to subhedral with fine- to medium-grained in texture, but some have bigger crystals of short prismatic or columnar habits. Clinopyroxene occurs as monomineralic or is associated with mostly garnet and sometimes with actinolite, magnetite, epidote, and chlorite. Chemical analysis reveals that the Geodo clinopyroxene is diopsidic in composition (Di: 65-96%). This fact is in good contrast with garnet chemistry showing mostly andraditic (An: 41-82%). Especially, clinopyroxene coexisting with magnetite belongs to nearly end member diopside (Di: 97-99%). Thus, diopside-andradite pair indicates that Geodo skarns were formed under the reduced environment. X-ray diffraction analysis shows unit-cell parameters vary with increase of Fe contents: a = 9.765-9.838$\AA$, b = 8.943-9.020$\AA$, c= 5.240-5.253$\AA$.$\beta$ = 105.70-104.83$^{\circ}$, and V =440.64-448.19$\AA$3. It is noted from the least square regression that a, b and V increase linearly with increase of Fe content, while $\beta$ slightly decreases and c remains nearly unchanged as change in Fe content. These trends are to difference between synthetic and natural clinopyroxenes. This fact is also recognized in IR spectra which show a slight shift of several absorption bands toward lower wavenumber region with increasing Fe content.

In this study, quasi-static according to the displacement-controlled (strain control) method tests on RC columns for seismic reinforcement performance in accordance with the provisions of the seismic design and construction before 1992 design code for highway bridges in korea. Used reinforcement that improves the performance of Inorganic Helical Bar, a kind of alloy steel, circular columns were tested outside the seismic reinforcing. In the experiment, fracture behavior, lateral load-displacement relation, ductility and energy assessment evaluation was performed through tests. The variables in experimental are section force of reinforcement, spiral reinforcement spacing, reinforcement method. Improved seismic performance and effect were confirmed through quasi-static test experiments. The results of study confirmed determination the appropriate size of reinforcement, reinforcement forces, spacing and selection of the type required, furthermore, not only mechanical reinforcement but also substitution of high-strength concrete reinforced with concrete cover improved seismic performance.
This study aims to investigate the relation between pressure, 3D length change, and subjective pressure sensation in sports brassieres. Seven Korean women in their 20s and 30s were chosen as subjects. In the experiment, the subjects evaluated four types of sports brassieres wherein the lower band was changed. The results of the study were as follows. The pressure according to the measurement position was lower at the front part than at the side and back parts (p<.05), and there was no difference in the pressure according to the brassiere type. It was observed that brassiere C, which had the higher extension band, was elongated more than the other brassieres when worn. In the case of brassiere B, which had a slit in the front center, it was observed that the 3D length of the front part changed very little as the slit spreads, and the back part stretched in a manner similar to those of the other brassieres. Subjective pressure sensation was statistically different only at the front and the side of the lower band. Brassiere B(with a silt) demonstrated the least subjective pressure sensation; the pressure sensation was high when wearing brassieres A and D (p<.05). Brassieres B and C were also preferred for overall comfort. In conclusion, it was observed that the substitution of material and morphological transformation affect subjective sensation.
Based on its geophysical feature, the island has long been recognized as a separate and self-sustaining space independent of neighboring continent or other islands. Literary tradition has used the island as a metaphor for a utopian alternative to mundane human society with its various kinds of wrongdoings. Recent nature writings have taken up this island metaphor to emphasize the wholeness of the ecosystem in specifically designated natural community or landscapes such as national parks or wilderness preservation areas. Human-nature relations as border-divided area is also recognized as the island. Modern island biogeography, however, has disproved such a concept of islands as autonomous, revealing the contrasting fact that the richness of species on an undisturbed island is determined largely by species immigration from and emigration to a source of colonists. This scientific finding has posited the island as the interconnected nature, but the public and metaphoric use of it still resorts to the old concept of it as isolated and autonomous nature, because this image has been ingrained deeply in our consciousness and culture. Considering the negative consequences from the recognition of nature and nature-humans as isolated space, we need a new nature metaphor that embodies interconnectedness in nature and of human-nature relations. Such feature of interconnectedness is best embedded in the concept of ecotone. Some ecotones are created and maintained through human participation in nature, and this human induced nature of ecotone denotes the possibilities of a constructive relation between them. The substitution of the island with the ecotone as the concept of nature and the image of human-nature relations is expected to correct ecocritical practices of reading of nature writing, which has been predominantly interpreted within the orientation of nature itself and nature-human relations as an isolated and self-autonomous island. Adopting the ecotone in literary study enables ecocriticism to dig out cultural elements embedded in nature writing and reveal socio-political, ideological factors hidden behind the writers' portrayal of nature as islands.
In this study, Austrian cleaner production program, ECOPROFIT, was introduced to 15 companies in Korea. The performance and the proposed options of the program were compared with those of Austria. Various options such as good housekeeping, process changes, internal/external recycling, substitution of raw materials were suggested for domestic companies. There are something in common between Korea and Austria such as no relation between company sizes and derived options and good housekeeping as a major option. The difference is that 1.9 years of recovery period on investment is required in Korea, while only 0.5 year is required in Austria. The reason for not applying the suggestions was due to the priority of the company policies in Korea, but was due to the technical problems in Austria. To activate the cleaner production in the Korean regional industry, more systematic analysis on the examples and performances as well as additional studies to disseminate informations and the best practices are necessary.
This study was performed to clarify whether the variation of stress related heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) (GenBank X68213) gene was associated with the nuclear morphological change of in vitro maturation and in vitro capacitation in oocytes of pig ovaries obtained at the slaughterhouse. The nucleic acid substitution of C to G at the 483rd position was found out in HSP70 K1 (290-512) from X68213. The ovaries were categorized into CC, CG, and GG genotypes using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) (BsiHKA I). After the second in vitro maturation of immature fresh oocytes, the relation of nuclear morphological change in oocytes with the genotype of HSP70 K1 gene was such that the MII ratios of the genotype GG and CG (46.93% and 42.20%, respectively) were significantly higher than that of the CC genotype (10.71%) (p<0.05). With respect to in vitro maturation of frozen-thawed oocytes by an open pulled straw (OPS) method, the percentage of oocytes matured to MII stage of the CG genotype showed a higher trend than CC and GG genotypes. After the in vitro maturation of immature fresh oocytes and frozen-thawed oocytes by the OPS method, the relation of the pronuclei change in oocytes matured in vitro with HSP70 genotype was assessed, and the result showed that the enlarged sperm heads (ESH) of matured fresh oocytes and frozen-thawed oocytes were 80.0% and 60.0% in the CC genotype, respectively. The CC genotype group had a significantly higher rate of ESH than the CG and the GG genotype group (p<0.05). The ratios of polyspermic invasion were not different among HSP70 of the three genotypes. It was considered that the rate of in vitro maturation of fertilized oocytes was expected to differ according to genotype of the stress related gene.
This study is to analyze the existence of the real buffer effect that reflects the effect of beginning-of-period inventory stocks effect on the demand for fixed investment, and the financial buffer effect indicates the substitution effect between end-of-period inventory stock and the source of financing for fixed investment. I use panel data of 361 Korean listed non-financial firms during 1990-2003. After the crisis, it also observed whether the relationship between inventory stocks and fixed investment has altered or not. I review the theoretical connection between inventory stock and fixed investment through the paper by Bo(2004) and estimate the investment model by the method of GMM-SYS. The results show negative relation between end-of-period inventory stock and fixed investment in the whole period and each period classified, also it confirms that the relation between fixed investment and end-of-period investment is significantly negative. It can be interpreted through two aspects that firms not only use inventory stock as a buffer in response to unexpectedly high demand, but also utilize inventory stock as a source of financing for fixed investment. The results imply that firm's decision-making is much correlated with production-and-inventory stock adjustment, decision-making about fixed investment, and decision-making about financial affairs.

This study is aimed to clarify the distribution chracteristics of marine terraces and extract the specific surface at Gampo-eup, Gyeongju city on the map of 1:5,000 using GIS. The effects and problems occurred on the process of using GIS were investigated for the research of marine terrace. The longitudinal profile analysis was carried out along the 12 sections on the geomorphic surfaces of the study area, and actually High higher surface(HH-surface) was found over 100m a.s.l., which has not been reported till now. And the occupancy rate could be calculated by substitution on the height between 4m and 87m a.s.l. for each mean slope degree $1-5^{\circ}$ obtained from the actual measuring along four sections. Consequently the lower-I surface was highly reliable to use as the key bed for studying marine terraces. The accurate and detail analysis about the marine terraces is able to be accomplished on the basis of meaningful actual measuring, though its general possible distribution area can be extracted from GIS with the less effort. Namely the quantified results obtained from GIS could offer the basis for the objective analysis of the geomorphic surfaces. And we can look over the landscape and investigate the surfaces with reliefs effectively in relation to the real geomorphology on the study area, where in situ approach is difficult. But the digital map with a large scale should be offered first of all in order to raise the accuracy of the analysis.
The aim of this study was to develop rice cookies based on 'Goami 2' rice, and made with sesame (white and black) and perilla seeds. Furthermore, we studied the physicochemical and sensory characteristics of the cookies as well as the alternative effects of the sesames or perilla seeds for butter, where we substituted the sesames or perilla for 30% of the total butter. The pH values of the cookie doughs made with the sesames or perilla seeds were significantly different (p<0.001), whereas the spread factors of the doughs were not significantly different. The Hunter color L-, a-, and b- values were significantly different for the cookies made with the added sesames or perilla seeds (p<0.001). The brittleness of the Goami 2 rice cookies (control) was significantly higher than that of the cookies made with the sesames or perilla (p<0.001). In a descriptive analysis performed by 8 trained panelists, the following sensory characteristics: yellow, black, sweet taste, nutty taste, nutty odor, oily flavor, and off flavor, were significantly different among the cookie samples. In a consumer test by 50 women students, the Goami 2 rice cookies were preferred in the following order: Goami 2 rice cookies with no additions > black sesame cookies > white sesame cookies > perilla cookies. In conclusion, some physicochemical and sensory characteristics of the cookies were different, in relation to being made with or without the sesame or perilla seeds. However, because of the small difference in acceptance among the cookies, the sesame and perilla rice cookies show strong potentials for consumer acceptance. Moreover, the black sesame cookies were more acceptable in terms of butter substitution for the cookie preparation.
