TOWARD THE EAST ASIAN OBSERVATORY

  • I report here about the future direction of cooperation of astronomy in East Asia region, which has been a long-years subject of the EAMA since 1990. During this EAMA-6 we had many positive discussions and remarkable progress toward the promotion of our cooperation. We also had an 'East Asian Observatory' WG meeting yesterday with many attendants, and actively discussed this important subject in some detail. The following report is to summarize the fruitful products we had in the EAMA-6 discussions and in past EAMA activities, and to propose a direction and some action items toward the bright future of astronomy in East Asia.

  • The International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) initiated by the Thailand Astronomical Society in 2007 is an annual competition for high school students. One of its aim is to enhance the development of international exchange in the field of school education in astronomy and astrophysics. This paper first provides the overview of the IOAA in terms of key regulations based on its statutes, history and current status. Secondly, the published syllabus of the IOAA is used for content analysis according to subject areas regarding the exam questions of the IOAA in theoretical, observational and data analysis parts from 2007 to 2010. Also, a scientific inquiry framework is applied to the same questions for assessment based on scientific inquiry in the cognitive aspect with two sub-classes of scientific knowledge and scientific reasoning. Among a dozen astronomy subject areas listed on the syllabus, the theoretical part of the IOAA makes more frequent use of the Sun, the solar system, properties of stars, and concept of time. In content knowledge, a factor of scientific knowledge, the IOAA questions, especially in the theoretical part have a lesser degree in difficulty than the IAO (International Astronomy Olympiad) exam questions for the same period whose degree in difficulty is comparable to college level. With regard to scientific reasoning, the IOAA questions tend to involve convergent rather than divergent thinking. Lastly, in light of these findings, discussions are given on the outcome of Korean participation in the previous IOAAs and ways to help better in preparing Korean students for future astronomy Olympiads.

북한 언론매체에 실린 천문 기사 연구 (A STUDY OF ARTICLES RELATED ON ASTRONOMY PUBLISHED IN NORTH KOREA MEDIA)

  • We have investigated the North Korean astronomical articles published in five media such as the Rodong Sinmun (노동신문), Minju Choson (민주조선), Tongil Sinbo (통일신보), Munhak Sinmun (문학신 문), and Choson Sinbo (조선신보) for 15 years from 2005 to 2019. The astronomical articles were classified by subject to study the astronomical activity in North Korea. We have examined the perceptions of astronomy in North Korean society through the temporal variation of astronomical articles according to four subjects. As a result, we have found that there are many articles in the subject of Historical Astronomy and Astronomical News in the media. In the era of Kim Jong-un, the articles on the Historical Astronomy decreased while the Astronomy news tended to increase. We have also summarized the specific issues and topics including the change of the standard meridian, launch of satellites, astronomical news, and so forth. The North Korean astronomical article is a valuable resource to examine the current status of North Korea's astronomy and astronomical education. We expect the results of this study to be a useful resource in preparing for inter-Korean astronomical cooperation.

초등예비교사들의 천문영역 교수방법에 대한 인식 조사 연구 (A Study on Perception Survey of Elementary Preservice Teachers on Teaching Methods in Astronomy)

  • 본 연구는 B 교육대학교의 2학년 심화과정 4개반 115명을 대상으로 하였다. 초등예비교사들은 초등과학 천문영역 주제에 대해서 어떤 교수 방법을 인식하고 있는지 조사하였다. 설문이 수집된 80명의 인식자료를 분석하였다. 본 연구를 위해 5일간의 설문조사를 하였다. 초등예비교사들은 과학과의 다양한 영역 중에서 천문영역 교수방법에 대해 어려움을 호소하고 있었다. 초등예비교사들이 초등과학 천문영역의 주제를 교수하는데 어떠한 어려움이 있는지 파악하고자 하였으며 천문영역 주제를 교수하는데 보다 효율적인 교수방법을 찾고자 연구하였다. 초등과학 천문영역의 주제를 교수하는데 어떠한 설문을 할 것인지에 대해서도 초등예비교사들과 함께 토의하여 설문에 대한 주제를 설정하였다. 초등과학 천문영역에 대한 주제는 여러 가지가 있으나 지구와 달에 대한 단원을 중심으로 2가지의 설문을 작성하였다. 3학년 1학기 4단원(1/10)에서 '지구는 어떤 모습일까요?'. 6학년 1학기 2단원(1/11)에서 '달은 어떤 모습일까요?'로 설정하였다. 초등예비교사들의 배경지식을 총동원하여 초등학생들에게 천문영역 주제를 어떻게 교수할 것인가에 대해서 솔직하게 서술하시오. 이러한 설문에 대한 결과 처리는 언어 분석방법으로 넷마이너를 활용하여 언어 표현을 가시화하여 나타내었으며, 초등예비교사들이 실제 설문에 응답한 내용을 기술하고 해석하였다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 초등예비교사들이 초등과학 천문영역 주제에 대해 보다 효율적인 교수방법을 제시하고자 하였다. 또한 초등과학 천문영역 주제를 강의하기 위한 기본적인 절차와 방법을 제시하였다. 초등예비교사들에게 초등과학 천문영역 주제를 교수하는데 보다 효율적인 교수방법을 제시하였다.

Study on Status of Solar Astronomy in North Korea

  • We present status of solar astronomy in North Korea through analysis of research papers written by North Korea scientists. For the study, we collected 42 papers published in North Korea and international journals. We have analyzed the papers statistically according to three criteria such as research subject, research field, and research members. The main research subjects are the sunspot (28%), observation system (21%), and space environments (19%). The research fields are distributed with data analysis (50%), numerical method (29%), and instrument development (21%). There have been 25 and 9 researchers in the solar astronomy and space environment, respectively since 1995. North Korea's solar research activities were also investigated in three area: instrument, solar physics, and international research linkage. PAO(Pyongyang Astronomical Observatory) has operated two of sunspot telescope and solar horizontal telescope for spectroscopy and polarimetry, but there is no specific information on solar radio telescopes. North Korea has cooperated in solar research with Europe and China. We expect that the results of this study will be used as useful resource in supporting astronomical cooperation between South and North Korea in the future.

Time-series Spectroscopy of the Pulsating Eclipsing Binaries using BOES

  • Oscillating Algol-type eclipsing binaries (oEA) are very interesting objects that have three observational features of eclipse, pulsation, and mass transfer. Direct measurement of their masses and radii from the double-lined radial velocity (RV) data and photometric light curves would be the most essential for understanding their evolutionary process and for performing the asteroseismological study. However, only handful oEA stars were studied in detail. To advance this subject, we have been obtaining high-resolution spectra for several oEA stars using Bohyunsan Optical Echelle Spectrograph (BOES). In this presentation, we present our results such as the accurate absolute parameters and evolutionary states for each object, based on the simultaneous analyses of the light and RV curves.

  • These days, advanced technologies provide an easy way for the public to obtain information about anything, including astronomy. Most people know astronomy for its sky events and scientific results. In Indonesia, the public has a high interest not only in astronomy information but also in participating in astronomy events, but it is limited to those who has access to a club nearby. Otherwise, for those who live in remote areas or simply don't have any access, they depend on information from newspapers, magazines, books or word of mouth. They usually think that astronomy is a difficult subject to learn, while in fact it is something doable and fun.

최근 천문학 연구 키워드와 천체 분야 교육과정 내용 요소 비교 분석 (A Comparative Analysis of Keywords in Astronomical Journals and Concepts in Secondary School Astronomy Curriculum)

  • 힉스입자 발견, 블랙홀 이미지 촬영, 외계행성 탐사, 깊은 우주탐사, 중력파 관측 등 최근 천문학은 매우 빠르게 성장하고 있으며, 학생들도 상대적으로 흥미가 높은 분야이다. 본 연구의 목적은 최근 10년간 천문학 연구 저널에서 높은 빈도로 등장한 키워드들과 중고등학교 과학 교육과정에 포함된 천문학 내용 요소를 7개 영역별로 비교하여 천문학 교육과정 개선에 대한 시사점을 얻는 것이다. 우선 선정된 4개 저널-ApJ, ApJL, A&A, MNRAS-에 2011년부터 2020년까지 게재된 모든 논문의 키워드를 R 패키지로 수집하여 연구 동향을 살펴보았다. 교육과정 내용 요소는 7학년부터 12학년 학생이 배우는 과목 중 천문학 내용 요소가 포함된 6개 과목(과학, 통합과학, 지구과학I, 지구과학II, 물리II, 융합과학)의 2015 개정 교육과정 문서에 제시된 내용 체계표, 성취기준, 성취기준해설을 현직 교사들이 코딩한 결과를 종합하여 추출하였다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 천문학에서 꾸준하게 많이 등장하는 키워드는 'galaxies: formation, galaxies: active, star: formation, accretion, accretion discs, method: numerical'이다. 둘째, 천문학 교육과정은 모든 학생이 배우는 공통 과학 과목 안에서 'High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena' 영역을 제외한 모든 영역을 포함하도록 구성되었으나 키워드 수준에서 보면 과목별, 학년별 내용 요소 배치와 새롭게 도입할 만한 주제에 대한 검토가 필요한 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 과목의 근간을 이루는 과학연구 분야와 교육과정을 비교한 탐색적 연구로서, 연구 결과는 향후 천문학 교육과정 개정에 시사점을 줄 수 있는 기초 연구가 되길 기대한다.

우리나라와 미국 초등 과학 교과서의 천문 영역 내용 비교 분석 (A Comparative Analysis of Astronomy Areas in the Elementary Science Textbooks of Korea and the U.S.A.)

  • Astronomy areas in the elementary science textbooks of Korea and the U.S.A. have been compared to find advantages and disadvantages of Korean textbooks. The analysis objects are the 7th national curriculum science textbooks for Korea and the Macmillan McGraw-Hill(MMH) science textbooks for the U.S.A. The results are as follows: First, in contexts, Korean science textbooks contain mostly inquiry activities and partly reading materials. However, MMH ones contain mostly explanations including photographs, related activities, and various reading materials. Second, in the contents and order, the observation activities of constellations are emphasized in Korean science textbooks, while the MMH ones explain solar system up to the universe in details. In addition, Korean science textbooks deal with one subject only once during the whole elementary course while MMH ones deal with one subject repeatedly in several grades. Third, in the frameworks of the international mathematics and science study (TIMSS) 2007, Korean science textbooks do not introduce some contents presented in TIMSS 2007, whereas MMH textbooks introduce every one of them in time. Fourth, the major subjects such as change of moon phases, constellations, the solar system, and change of seasons are handled independently in Korean science textbooks without strong correlation, while they are systematically done related with the rotation and the revolution of the earth in MMH ones.

Collision Avoidance Algorithm for Satellite Formation Reconfiguration under the Linearized Central Gravitational Fields

  • A collision-free formation reconfiguration trajectory subject to the linearized Hill's dynamics of relative motion is analytically developed by extending an algorithm for gravity-free space. Based on the initial solution without collision avoidance constraints, the final solution to minimize the designated performance index and avoid collision is found, based on a gradient method. Simple simulations confirm that satellites reconfigure their positions along the safe trajectories, while trying to spend minimum energies. The algorithm is applicable to wide range of formation flying under the Hill's dynamics.
