(Ba1-xCax)(Ti1-yZry)O3 Powder Synthesis Via Hydrothermal Treatment

  • $(Ba_{1-x}Ca_x)(Ti_{1-y}Zr_y)O_3(BCTZ)$ powders for the Ni-electrode Multilayer Ceramic Capacitor(MLCC) were synthesized via hydrothermal treatment using mixed aqueous solutions of $BaCl_2{\cdot}2H_2O,\Ca(NO_3)2{\cdot}4H_2O,\ ZrOCl_2{\cdot}8H_2O$ and $TiCl_4$. Two component and three component systems were also extensively studied for basic data. BT, CT and BZ powders were crystalline but CZ was determined to be amorphous under the same synthetic condition. In BTZ system, Zr and Ti were completely soluble and Ca would be substituted for Ba up to ∼6 mol% in BCT. The submicron-sized $(Ba_{0.95}Ca_{0.05})(Ti_{0.80}Zr_{0.20})O_3$ powder of the target composition was successfully synthesized at $150{\circ}$ for 12h.

익산지역 가을철 대기 중 호흡성 및 흡입성 먼지입자의 화학조성 (Chemical Composition of Respirable PM2.5 and Inhalable PM10 in Iksan City during Fall, 2004)

  • Intensive measurements of airborne respirable $PM_{2.5}$ and inhalable $PM_{2.5}$ were conducted in the downtown area of Iksan city. The $PM_{2.5}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ samples were collected twice a day in the Iksan city of Korea from October 17 to November 1, 2004. The purpose of the study was to determine the inorganic water-soluble components and trace elements of $PM_{2.5}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ in the atmospheric environment and estimate the contribution rate of major chemical components from a mass balance of all measured particulate species. The chemical analysis for PM samples was conducted for water-soluble inorganic ions using ion chromatography and trace elements using PIXE analysis. The mean concentrations of respirable $PM_{2.5}$ and inhalable $PM_{2.5}$ were $51.4{\pm}29.7$ and $79.5{\pm}39.6\;{\mu}g/m^3$, respectively, and the ratio was 0.62. The ion species of $NO_3$, $SO_4^2$, and $NH_4^+$ were abundant in both $PM_{2.5}$ and $PM_{2.5}$. These components predominated in respirable $PM_{2.5}$ fraction, while $Na^+$, $Mg^{2+}$, $Ca^{2+}$ mostly existed in coarse particle mode. Elemental components of S, Cl, K, and Si were abundant in both $PM_{2.5}$ and $PM_{2.5}$. These elements, except for Si, were considered to be emitted from anthropogenic sources, while Si, Al, Fe, Ca existed mainly in coarse particle mode and were considered to be emitted from crustal materials. The averaged mass balance analysis showed that ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulfate, crustal component, and other trace elements were composed of 18.4%, 13.2%, 4.8%, 3.5% for PM2.5 and 17.0%, 11.6%, 13.7%, 4.4% for $PM_{2.5}$, respectively.

A Bioactive Fraction from Streptomyces sp. Enhances Maize Tolerance against Drought Stress

  • Drought stress is threatening the growth and productivity of many economical crops. Therefore, it is necessary to establish innovative and efficient approaches for improving crop growth and productivity. Here we investigated the potentials of the cell-free extract of Actinobacteria (Ac) isolated from a semi-arid habitat (Al-Jouf region, Saudi Arabia) to recover the reduction in maize growth and improve the physiological stress tolerance induced by drought. Three Ac isolates were screened for production of secondary metabolites, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. The isolate Ac3 revealed the highest levels of flavonoids, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities in addition to having abilities to produce siderophores and phytohormones. Based on seed germination experiment, the selected bioactive fraction of Ac3 cell-free extract (F2.7, containing mainly isoquercetin), increased the growth and photosynthesis rate under drought stress. Moreover, F2.7 application significantly alleviated drought stress-induced increases in H2O2, lipid peroxidation (MDA) and protein oxidation (protein carbonyls). It also increased total antioxidant power and molecular antioxidant levels (total ascorbate, glutathione and tocopherols). F2.7 improved the primary metabolism of stressed maize plants; for example, it increased in several individuals of soluble carbohydrates, organic acids, amino acids, and fatty acids. Interestingly, to reduce stress impact, F2.7 accumulated some compatible solutes including total soluble sugars, sucrose and proline. Hence, this comprehensive assessment recommends the potentials of actinobacterial cell-free extract as an alternative ecofriendly approach to improve crop growth and quality under water deficit conditions.

  • The alveolar bone remodeling is essential in tooth movement by orthodontic forces. The collagen and chondroitin sulfate are acting as an important roles in bone remodeling. This study was performed to measure out the quantity of the collagen and chondroitin sulfate in the alveolar bone of rats applied by experimental orthodontic forces. The 150 Sprague-Dawley male rats were divided into the $PGE_2$ treated group, indomethacin treated group and the normal group. A 80gm force rubber band was used as a orthodontic appliance between upper incisors and right upper 1st molar, and left side of experimental rats with no appliance was regarded as a control side. The samples of alveolar bones were obtained from pressure and tension sites in all three groups. respectively, and in control sides, too. The results were as follows. 1. The change in total collagen remains stable in both pressure and tension sites of all three groups, compared with control side by the time consuming. 2. The change in soluble collagen showed the most highest level in tension site, lowest level in pressure site of $PGE_2$ treated group in 5th. experimental day. 3. The change in chondroitin sulfate showed the most highest level in pressure site, lowest level in tension site of $PGE_2$ treated group in 5th. experimental day. 4. In indomethacin treated group, the change of soluble collagen and chondroitin sulfate showed small range of variance compared with $PGE_2$ treated and normal group.

MgCl2에 의한 고무의 접착특성 및 기계적 강도 변화 (A Study on Adhesion of Mechanical Properties of Rubber by MgCl2)

  • 본 연구는 신발의 겉창용 고무 접착공정에서 버핑, 고무 프라이머 처리 등 전처리 공정을 생략하여 공정의 간소화로 생산효율을 높이기 위하여 $MgCl_2$가 포함된 고무 성형물에 대한 접착특성과 기계적 특성을 고찰하였다. $MgCl_2$함량 별로 평가한 결과, $MgCl_2$가 포함된 고무 성형물의 경우 수성 접착제에 대해 우수한 접착효과를 보였다. 이는 $MgCl_2$가 물에 녹는 염 인 것을 감안했을 때 일어나는 현상이라 판단했고, 접촉각 과 표면분석 측정으로 결과를 확인하였다. 또한, $MgCl_2$가 포함된 고무 성형물의 경우 가교효율이 증가되어 마모 특성이 증가하는 현상을 볼 수 있었다.

Effect of Treatment with Selected Plant Extracts on the Physiological and Biochemical Parameters of Rice Plants under Salt Stress

  • High soil salinity is the most severe threat to global rice production as it causes a significant decline in rice yield. Here, we investigated the effects of various plant extracts on rice plant stress associated with high salinity. Additionally, we examined various physiological and biochemical parameters such as growth, photosynthetic activity, chlorophyll content, and lipid peroxidation - in rice plants after treatment with selected plant extracts under salt stress conditions. Of the 11 extracts tested, four - soybean leaf, soybean stem, moringa (Moringa oleifera), and Undaria pinnatifida extracts - were found to effectively reduce salt stress. A reduction of only 3-23% in shoot fresh weight was observed in rice plants under salt stress that were treated with these extracts, compared to the 43% reduction observed in plants that were exposed to stress but not given plant extract treatments (control plants). The effectiveness varied with the concentration of the plant extracts. Water content was higher in rice plants treated with the extracts than in the control plants after 6 d of salt stress, but not after 4 d of salt stress. Although photosynthetic efficiency (Fv/Fm), electron transport rate (ETR), and the content of pigments (chlorophyll and carotenoid) varied based on the types and levels of stress and the extracts that the rice plants were treated with, generally, photosynthetic efficiency and pigment content were higher in the treated rice compared to control plants. Reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as superoxide radicals, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and malondialdehyde (MDA), increased as the duration of stress increased. ROS and MDA levels were lower in the treated rice than in the control plants. Proline and soluble sugar accumulation also increased with the duration of the stress period. However, proline and soluble sugar accumulation were lower in the treated rice than in the control plants. Generally, the values of all the parameters investigated in this study were similar, regardless of the plant extract used to treat the rice plants. Thus, the extracts found to be effective can be used to alleviate the adverse effects of stress on rice crops associated with high-salinity soils.

Vitamin contents and antioxidant characteristics of red and gold kimchi cabbages (Brassica rapa. L. ssp. pekinensis)

  • Kimchi cabbage is widely consumed in Korea, with the popularity of this pickled vegetable dish growing internationally due to its health benefits. In this study, the physical (size, color), functional (antioxidant activity, total polyphenol, and flavonoid content), and nutritional (water- and fat-soluble vitamins) characteristics of two new kimchi cabbage varieties, namely red and gold kimchi cabbages (RKC and GKC, respectively), were analyzed and compared with those of the common kimchi cabbage (CKC). There were no significant differences in the thickness or length of the three kimchi cabbages, although RKC had the narrowest outer leaves among the three varieties (11.94 cm). Regarding chromaticity, yellowness was highest in GKC (29.86), whereas redness was highest in RKC (9.31). Furthermore, RKC had the highest recorded vitamin B6 and B9 (1,288.5 ㎍/100 g and 776.7 ㎍ dietary folate equivalent/100 g, respectively). On the other hand, the fat-soluble vitamins vitamin A (β-carotene) and K (Phylloquinone) were both highest in GKC (907.1 ㎍/100 g and 712.2 ㎍/100 g, respectively). Generally, all kimchi cabbage samples contained high levels of vitamin E (1.8-4.9 mg α-tocopherol equivalent/100 g). RKC attained the highest antioxidant activity and total polyphenol and total flavonoid contents among the three kimchi cabbages. These results show that gold and red kimchi cabbage can be used as raw materials in the food-processing industry.

황해상 덕적도 PM2.5오염원의 확인 (Source Identification of PM2.5 at the Tokchok Island on the Yellow Sea)

  • An air pollution monitoring station has been operated at Tokchok Island since April 1999 to characterize the background atmosphere in the vicinity of the Yellow Sea. In this study, eight chemical species in PM$_{2.5}$ and three gaseous species were analyzed. A total of 53 samples were collected for the analysis of PM$_{2.5}$ and gaseous species from April, 1999 to April, 2001. The overall mean mass concentration of PM$_{2.5}$ was 20.8 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ and the eight soluble ionic species accounted for about 46.8% of PM$_{2.5}$ mass. Approximately 80% of samples appeared to experience the chloride loss effect. Air pollutant sources of PM$_{2.5}$ measured at Tokchok Island were qualitatively identified by the principal component analysis. It was found that five principal components are secondary aerosol, soil, incineration, phase change of nitrate, and ocean.and ocean.

통계분석을 이용한 경산 지역의 초미세먼지(PM2.5) 농도 특성 파악 (Characteristics of PM2.5 in Gyeongsan Using Statistical Analysis)

  • The ambient $PM_{2.5}$ samples were collected by $PM_{2.5}$ sampler from September 2010 to December 2012 at Daegu University, Gyeongsan. A total of 260 samples were collected and 27 species were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma, ion chromatography, and thermal optical reflectance methods. Factor analysis identified four sources such as biomass burning source/secondary aerosol source, soil source, industry source, and incinerator source/mobile source. Also, backward trajectories were calculated using HYSPLIT 4 (Hybrid single-particle lagrangian integrated trajectory) model and PSCF (Potential source contribution function) model was applied to identify the possible source locations of carbonaceous species and water soluble ions species. PSCF results showed that the possible source locations of most chemical constituents measured in Gyeongsan were the industrial areas in the eastern coast of China, northeast regions of China, the Gobi Desert, and east sea of Korea.

Antibiotic Components from the Rhizomes of Curcuma zedoaria

  • Two terpenoids, including one uniquely aromatized one (1), were isolated from CH2Cl2-soluble fraction of MeOH extracts of Curcuma zedoaria. They were identified to be a sesquiterpene ketolactone (1) and orobanone (2), respectively on the basis of their NMR data. The structure of compound 1 was confirmed by X-ray chrystallography and the reported NMR assignments for 1 were revised in this study. Antibiotic activities for compounds 1 and 2 were evaluated using disk diffusion assay. Compound 1 showed potent antibacterial activities against Listeria monocytogenes and Staphylococcus pseudointermedius while compound 2 was active against Bacillus cereus.
