  • This study proposes a $CO_2$ emission reduction method through correlation analysis of a sample building. First, energy saving factors of heating, cooling, lighting were determined for the correlation analysis and $CO_2$ emission contribution rate of the design parameters have been analyzed. Then optimal combination of each design parameter has been drawn. Heat transfer coefficient of walls and windows, air permeability, windows area ratio, and shading devices were selected as applicable energy saving factors of the sample building. Also computer simulation was conducted using experimental design by Orthogonal Arrays of the statistical method. And the contribution rate was estimated by Analysis of Variance-ANOVA. As a result, the $CO_2$ emission in heating was reduced to 51.9%; in cooling to 16.8%; and in lighting to 2% compared to the existing building. The majority of the reduction was presented by heating energy.

  • In this study, two different scenarios for ammonia liquefaction in the green ammonia manufacturing process were proposed, and the economic-feasibility and environmental impact of each scenario were analyzed. The two liquefaction processes involved gas-liquid separation before cooling at high pressure (high pressure cooling process) or after decompression without the gas-liquid separation (low pressure cooling process). The high-pressure cooling process requires higher capital costs due to the required installation of separation units and heat exchangers, but it offers relatively lower total utility costs of 91.03 $/hr and a reduced duty of 2.81 Gcal/hr. In contrast, although the low-pressure cooling process is simpler and cost-effective, it may encounter operational instability due to rapid pressure drops in the system. Environmental impact assessment revealed that the high-pressure cooling process is more environmentally friendly than the low-pressure cooling process, with an emission factor of 0.83 tCO2eq less than the low-pressure cooling process, calculated based on power usage. Consequently, the outcomes of this study provide relevant scenario and a database for green ammonia synthesis process adaptable to various process conditions.

  • Industrial cooling towers are often ageing infrastructure that is expensive to maintain and operate. A novel approach is introduced in which a heat pump circuit is incorporated to reduce the load upon the towers by extracting low-grade energy from the stream sent to the towers and repurposing in on-site processing operations. To demonstrate the concept, a model was constructed, which uses industrial data on cooling towers linked to a smelter's sulphuric acid plant, to allow direct economic and environmental impact comparison between different heat recovery and repurposing scenarios. The model's results showed that implementing a heat pump system would significantly decrease annual operating costs and achieve a payback period of 3 years. In addition, overall CO2 emissions could be reduced by 42% (430,000 kg/year) and a 5% heat load reduction on the cooling towers achieved. The concept is significant as the outcomes introduce a new way for energy intensive industrial sectors, such as mineral processing, to reduce energy consumption and improve long-term sustainable performance.

  • Porous thick film of alumina which is fabricated by freeze tape casting using a camphene-camphor-acrylate vehicle. Alumina slurry is mixed above the melting point of the camphene-camphor solvent. Upon cooling, the camphene-camphor crystallizes from the solution as particle-free dendrites, with the $Al_2O_3$ powder and acrylate liquid in the interdendritic spaces. Subsequently, the acrylate liquid is solidified by photopolymerization to offer mechanical properties for handling. The microstructure of the porous alumina film is characterized for systems with different cooling rate around the melting temperature of camphor-camphene. The structure of the dendritic porosity is compared as a function of ratio of camphene-camphor solvent and acrylate content, and $Al_2O_3$ powder volume fraction in acrylate in terms of the dendrite arm width.

  • In this study, dynamic characteristics analysis of AC system is investigated using a cool thermal storage system. A analysing program for cool thermal storage AC system is developed. The performances are studied by several variables and dynamic characteristics. Comparing the result at conventional operation condition with that at the condition using ice storage system, this study showed the effects of the sub cooled degree, superheated degree, efficiency of compressor and evaporating temperature. At the condition using thermal storage system, the thermal storage process was operated during midnight being not needed the cooling of the AC unit through the continuous running of the condenser. The refrigerant was sub-cooled using stored energy after being discharged from the air source condenser during the daytime. The COP was increased owing to the sub-cooling of refrigerant during daytime, thus the power consumption was effectively decreased.

  • An advanced superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) using $high-T_c$ superconducting (HTS) wire has been developed. The SFCL has a non-inductively wound magnet for reducing loss in normal state. Two types of non-inductively wound magnets, the solenoid type and the pancake type, were designed and manufactured by using Bi-2223 wire in this research. Short-circuit tests of the magnets were performed in sub-cooled $LN_2$ cooling system of 65 K. The magnets are thermally more stable and have a higher critical current in 65 K sub-cooled $LN_2$ cooling system than in 77 K saturated one. Because the resistivity of matrix at 65 K is lower than the resistivity at 77 K, the magnets generate a small resistance to reduce the fault current when the quench occurs. The magnets could limit the fault current to low current level with such a small resistance. The current limiting characteristic of the magnets was analyzed from the test result. The solenoid type was wound in parallel to make it non-inductive. The pancake type was also connected in parallel to be compared with the solenoid type in the same condition. The solenoid type was found to have a good thermal stability compared with the pancake type. It also had as large resistance as the pancake type to limit the fault current in sub-cooled $LN_2$ cooling system.

  • The numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the thermal-fluid phenomena occurred inside the experimental apparatus during a PCCS, used to remove heat released in accidents from a containment of light water nuclear power plant, operation. Numerical simulations of the flow and heat transfer caused by wall condensation inside the containment simulation vessel (CSV), which equipped with 18 vertical heat exchanger tubes, were conducted using the commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software ANSYS-CFX. Shear stress transport (SST) and the wall condensation model were used for turbulence closure and wall condensation, respectively. The simulation using the actual size of the apparatus. However, rather than simulating the whole experimental apparatus in consideration of the experimental cases, calculation resources, and calculation time, the simulation model was prepared only in CSV. Selective simulation was conducted to verify the effects of non-condensable gas(NC gas) concentration, CSV internal pressure, and wall sub-cooling conditions. First, as a result of the internal flow of CSV, it was observed that downward flow due to condensation occurred surface of the vertical tube and upward flow occurred in the distant place. Natural convection occurred actively around the heat exchanger tube. Due to this rising and falling internal flow, natural circulation occurred actively around the heat exchanger tubes. Next, in order to check the performance of built-in condensation model using according to the non-condensable gas concentration, CSV internal flow and wall sub-cooling, the heat flux values were compared with the experimental results. On average, the results were underestimated with and error of about 25%. In addition, the influence of CSV internal pressure and wall sub-cooling was small, but when the condensate was highly generated due to the low non-condensable gas concentration, the error was large compared to the experimental values. This is considered to be due to the nature of the condensation model of the CFX code. However, in spite of the limitations of CFD, it is valid to use the built-in condensation model of CFD for PCCS performance prediction from a conservative perspective.

  • Experimental study was performed to understand the real operation conditions of a showcase working usually in a convenient store and discount store. The purpose of this study was to show the possibility for practical use of cold-heat storage systems being operated for the showcase. To do that, evaporator and condenser temperatures were measured and the compressor electric power consumption were measured simultaneously. To use the ice storage system, the ice making process was typically operated during midnight being not needed the cooling of the showcase through the continuous running of the condenser unit. And then, the refrigerant was subcooled using the stored cold-heat after being discharged from the condenser during daytime. So, the cooling performance was increased with the sub-cooling of refrigerant during daytime, hence the actual running time of the compressor could be effectively decreased. Through the experiments, this study showed that the compressor electric power consumption during daytime could be transferred to nighttime for applying the refrigerant sub-cooling. So, for the convenient store, the maximum load transfer rates for each working cooler and showcase were estimated about 31.1% and 19.9% respectively. And for the discount store, the maximum load transfer rates for each refrigeration and freezing showcase were estimated about 34.1% and 49.0% respectively.

  • In order to cool the turbine blade under high temperature operating conditions, the film-cooling method is generally applied. In this study, $CO_2$ was used as working fluid and it helped the operating system to prevent the loss of compressed air. The trapezoidal diffuser shape was adopted at the cross section of hole and the characteristics of heat flow with various working fluids were numerically studied. In particular, the different mixture ratios of $CO_2$, such as various density ratios of 0.2, 0.8, and 1.0, respectively, were considered. Numerical results are graphically depicted with various conditions.
