  • This study represents a numerical research in vibration and buckling of functionally graded material (FGM) beam comprising edge crack by using finite element method (FEM) and multilayer perceptron (MLP). It is assumed that the material properties change only according to the exponential distributions along the beam thickness. FEM and MLP solutions of the natural frequencies and critical buckling load are obtained of the cracked FGM beam for clamped-free (C-F), hinged-hinged (H-H), and clamped-clamped (C-C) boundary conditions. Numerical results are obtained to show the effects of crack location (c/L), material properties (E2/E1), slenderness ratio (L/h) and end supports on the bending vibration and buckling properties of cracked FGM beam. The FEM analysis used in this paper was verified with the literature, and the fundamental frequency ratio ($\overline{P_{cr}}$) and critical buckling load ratio ($\overline{{\omega}}$) results obtained were compared with FEM and MLP. The results obtained are quite compatible with each other.

  • PVDF-HFP (binder)/silylated alumina (inorganic particle)-coated PE (polyethylene) separators were with various compositions of binder and inorganic particle were prepared by a dip-coating process with humidity control (R.H. 25% and 50%) using electron beam irradiation. The morphology of the coated PVDF-$HFP/Al_2O_3$ layer with various compositions of PVDF-HFP and $Al_2O_3$, and humidity condition was found to be an important factor in determining ionic conductivity of the prepared separators. The PVDF-$HFP/Al_2O_3$ (5/5)-coated PE separator prepared at R.H. 50% followed by electron beam irradiation at 200 kGy was applied for lithium-ion polymer battery and the cell test results showed improved high-rate discharge performance and better cyclic stability compared to the cells with the bare PE and the PVDF-HFP-coated PE separators.

  • Cellulose fibers were stabilized by treatment with an electron-beam (E-beam). The properties of the stabilized fibers were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The E-beam-stabilized cellulose fibers were carbonized in N2 gas at 800℃ for 1 h, and their carbonization yields were measured. The structure of the cellulose fibers was determined to have changed to hemicellulose and cross-linked cellulose as a result of the E-beam stabilization. The hemicellulose decreased the initial decomposition temperature, and the cross-linked bonds increased the carbonization yield of the cellulose fibers. Increasing the absorbed E-beam dose to 1500 kGy increased the carbonization yield of the cellulose-based carbon fiber by 27.5% upon exposure compared to untreated cellulose fibers.

  • SnO2 30/Ag 15/SnO2 30 nm(SAS) tri-layer films were deposited on the glass substrates with RF and DC magnetron sputtering and then electron beam is irradiated on the surface to investigate the effect of electron bombardment on the opto-electrical performance of the films. electron beam irradiated tri-layer films at 1000 eV show a higher figure of merit of 2.72×10-3 Ω-1 than the as deposited films due to a high visible light transmittance of 72.1% and a low sheet resistance of 14.0 Ω/☐, respectively. From the observed results, it is concluded that the post-deposition electron irradiated SnO2 30/Ag 15/SnO2 30 nm tri-layer films can be used as a substitute for conventional transparent conducting oxide films in various opto-electrical applications.

  • This study aimed to measure, quantitatively evaluate, and set the criteria for the minimum lead(Pb) shield thickness per level of clinically applied electron beam energy. The lead shield thickness per electron beam energy was measured using the primary field 95% reduction based on the open field at the depth of maximum dose (dmax) and depth from the surface as the reference depth of tissue dose(10 mm). The measured values were 1.906 mmPb and 1.992 mmPb at the dmax and 10 mm, respectively, regarding the lead shield thickness for 6 MeV electron beam; 2.746 mmPb and 3.743 mmPb for 9 MeV electron beam, 3.718 mmPb and 6.093 mmPb for 12 MeV electron beam, 7.300 mmPb and 15.270 mmPb for 16 MeV electron beam, and 16.825 mmPb and 25.090 mmPb for 20 MeV electron beam. Consequently, a thicker lead shield was required if the measurement was at 10 mm. The required lead shield thickness was also higher than that of the theoretical formula for electron beams of ≥ 16 MeV.

  • Swift heavy ion (SHI) beam irradiation can generate desirable defects in materials by transferring sufficient energy to the lattice that favours huge possibilities in tailoring of materials. The effect of Ag15+ ion irradiation with energy 200 MeV on spray deposited V2O5 thin films of thickness 253 nm is studied at various ion doses from 5 × 1011 to 1 × 1013 ions/㎠. The XRD results of pristine film confirmed orthorhombic structure of V2O5 and its average crystallite size was found to be 20 nm. The peak at 394 cm-1 in Raman spectra confirmed O-V-O bonding of V2O5, whereas 917 cm-1 arise because of distortion in stoichiometry by a loss of oxygen atoms. Raman peaks vanished completely above the ion fluence of 5 × 1012 ions/㎠. Optical studies by UV-Vis spectroscopy shows decrement in transmittance with an increase in ion fluence up to 5 × 1012 ions/㎠. The red shift is observed both in the direct and indirect band gaps until 5 × 1012 ions/㎠. The surface topography of the pristine film revealed sheath like structure with randomly distributed spherical nano-particles. The roughness of film decreased and the density of spherical nanoparticles increased upon irradiation. Irradiation improved the conductivity significantly for fluence 5 × 1011 ions/㎠ due to band gap reduction and grain growth.

  • In this study, we treated pitch-based activated carbon fibers (ACFs) in hydrogen peroxide using electron beam (E-beam) irradiation to improve nitrogen monoxide (NO) sensing ability as an electrode material of gas sensor. The specific surface area of ACFs treated by E-beam irradiation with 400 kGy increased from $885m^2/g$ (pristine) to $1160m^2/g$ without any changes in structural property and functional group. The increase in specific surface area of the E-beam irradiated ACFs enhanced NO gas sensing properties such as response time and sensitivity. When the ACFs irradiated with 400 kGy, response time was remarkably reduced from 360 s to 210 s and sensitivity was increased by 4.5%, compared to the pristine ACFs. These results demonstrate convincingly that surface modification of ACFs using E-beam in hydrogen peroxide solution can enhance textural properties of ACFs and NO gas sensing ability of gas sensor at room temperature.

  • In this paper, we studied the effects of the electron reflection on shadow mask on which the electron reflecting materials with $WO_3-ZnS:Cu.Al-PbO-SiO_2$ system were screen-printed and we evaluated the variation of the electron beam mislanding in CRT. As a result, the green emitted spectra on the electron reflecting layer are observed due to the transformation of the electron energy, when the electron impacted on shadow mask. The beam mislanding is reduced about 40% in comperision with that of CRT made by the conventional method.

  • Bi2212 and Bi2223 thin films are fabricated by ion beam sputtering method. Three phases of Bi2201, Bi2212 and Bi2223 appear as stable ones in spite of the condition for thin film fabrication of Bi2212 and bi2223 compositions, depending on substrate temperature(T$\sub$sub/) and ozone pressure (PO$_3$). It is found out that these phases show similar T$\sub$sub/ and PO$_3$dependence, and that the stable regions of these phases are limited within very narrow temperature.
