  • Epoxide hydrolase (EH) gene of Caulobacter crescentus was cloned by PCR and expressed in Escherichia coli. The C. crescentus EH (CcEH) primarily attacked at the benzylic carbon of (S)-styrene oxide, while the CcEH preferentially attacked at the terminal carbon of (R)-styrene oxide, thus leading to the formation of (R)-phenyl-1,2-ethanediol as the main product. (R)-phenyl-1,2-ethanediol was obtained with 85% enantiomeric excess and yield of 69% from racemic styrene oxide via enantioconvergent hydrolysis by using recombinant CcEH as the single biocatalyst.

  • We examined the culture conditions and degrading characteristics of styrene dimer (endocrine disrupter) using microorganism. The isolated microbe were consisted of 3 kinds of strain. The strains were identified to Pseudomonas sp. and Klebsiella pneumoniae by API 20E kit, but one was not identified. Single strain was not grown on the C-medium containing styrene dimer. However the complex strain YH3 could grow and we confirmed it by the broth color and O.D$_{660nm}$ (optical density 660 nm). The optimal culture conditions of complex strain YH3 were 35$^{\circ}C$, 1,000 ppm (v/v) of styrene dimer and pH 7.0, respectively. In tolerance test against the organic solvents, the complex strain YH3 could grow above log P=3.1, and could degrade ethyl benzene and 2,4-D, one kind of herbicide. As a result of TLC (Thin Layer Chromatography) analysis, we confirmed that the metabolite of styrene dimer was created by YH3 after 5th day, but not at control samples.

  • Background: This study was performed to evaluate the protective effect of Saururus chinensis ethanol extract (SCE) against styrene toxicity in mouse spermatocyte cells [GC-2spd (ts) cell line]. Methods and Results: Cytotoxicity in mouse spermatocyte cells was measured using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was determined using 2',7'-dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate (DCF-DA) assay. Semi-quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and western blotting were performed to quantify the mRNA and protein expression levels, resepectiviely, of stress or apoptosis-related genes including p21, p53, heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70), heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90), Bax, Bcl-2, and caspase-3. The results of the MTT assay showed that $50 {\mu}g/m{\ell}$ SCE did not affect cell viability. ROS generation in mouse spermatocyte cells increased by treatment with $100{\mu}M$ styrene, and decreased by co-treatment with SCE. SCE repressed the mRNA expression of stress-related genes, which increased by styrene treatment. In addition, SCE inhibited the apoptosis of mouse spermatocyte cells by ameliorating mRNA and protein levels of apoptotic genes that were altered by styrene treatment. Conclusions: These results suggest that SCE may alleviate styrene toxicity in mouse spermatocyte cells by reducing ROS stress and regulating genes related to styrene toxicity.

  • The zeta potential, called an electrokinetic potential, refers to the potential difference caused by electrodynamic phenomenon, which is a value obtained by quantifying the surface charge property. The zeta potential has been actively studied for membrane fouling, confirmation of modification and substituent confirmation through surface charge analysis. The methods of measurement for zeta potential were developed on the basis of electrophoresis, electrosmosis and streaming potential. Among them, it was known that the streaming potential method was suitable for the flat sheet membrane. So, in this study, aminated poly(styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene) membranes were prepared by introducing ammonium groups and the streaming potentials of the prepared membranes were measured by using an electrokinetic potential analyzer (SurPASS) and the results were analyzed.

  • The lithium isotopes separation experiments were carried out in hydrochloric acid with cation exchanger systerns. In these experiments were employed porous sulfonated styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer and Dowex 50w-x8 as cation exchanger. The contents of lithium of the fraction were determined with atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The relative mass of lithium isotopes of the fractions was analyzed on a mass spectrometer. The isotope separation factors of lithium were calculated from the isotope compositions of these eluted fractions. Separation factor for the system in hydrochloric acid and porous sulfonated styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer was found to be 1.0020, and for the case of system in hydrochloric acid and Dowex 50w-x8 was 1.0011${\om}$0.0002. From these results, we found that the separation factor for porous sulfonated styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer ionexchanger is larger than value of Dowex 50w-x8 ionexchanger.

  • Fabric ion-exchanger, aminated PP-g-styrene was synthesized with styrene monomer onto PP staple fiber by pre-irradiational grafting with E-beam and subsequent chloromethylation and amination. Degree of grafting was increased with increasing the styrene monomer concentration and the highest degree of grafting was obtained 118% at a monomer concentration of 80% styrene. Optimum condition of Mohr's salt and sulphuric acid were 1.0 ${\times}\;10^{-3}$ M and 0.1 M. Amount of amination was increased with increasing degree of grafting. Swelling ratio of aminated PP-g styrene was higher than that of trunk polymer. Ion-exchange capacity was 6.7 meq/g, which was three times greater than commercial ion-exchanger. Optimum condition of baron ion adsorption was pH 4 and amount of adsorption were increased with increasing the amount of amination.

  • The foam of ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA)/styrene-vinyl isoprene-styrene triblock copolymer(SVIS) blend was prepared to improve the shock-absorption and compression set characteristics at room temperature. The effects of blowing agent and blend ratio of EVA/SVIS on expansion ratio, cell structure and mechanical properties of the foam were investigated. As the SVIS content increased, the viscosity of blends was increased but the crosslinking rate was slow down, the expansion ratio was decreased. and the specific gravity was increased. At room temperature, the resilience was not affected by increasing the amount of blowing agent. The value of tan ${\delta}$ was increased by increasing the amount of SVIS. As a result, the value of compression set was decreased. This is due to the increased values of specific gravity and crosslinking density of the EVA/SVIS foam.

  • The characteristic biodegradation of monomeric styrene by Phanerochaete chrysosporium KFRI 20742, Trametes versicolor KFRI 20251 and Daldinia concentrica KFRI 40-1 was carried out to examine the resistance, its degradation efficiency and metabolites analysis. The estrogenic reduction effect of styrene by the fungi was also evaluated. The mycelium growth of fungi differentiated depending on the concentration levels of styrene. Additionally P. chrysosporium KFRI 20742 showed superior mycelium growth at less than 200 mg/l, while D. concentrica KFRI 40-1 was more than 200 mg/l. The degradation efficiency reached 99 % during one day of incubation for all the fungi. Both manganese-dependent peroxidase and laccase activities in liquid medium were the highest at the initial stage of incubation, whereas the lowest was after the addition of styrene. However, both activities were gradually recovered after. The major metabolites of styrene by P. chrysosporium KFRI 20742 were 2-phenyl ethanol, benzoic acid, cyclohexadiene-1,4-dione, butanol and succinic acid. From one to seven days of incubating the fungi, the expression of pS2 mRNA widely known as an estrogen response gene was decreased down to the level of baseline after one day. Also, the estrogenic effect of styrene completely disappeared after treatment with supernatant of P. chrysosporium KFRI 20742 from one week of culture down to the levels of vehicle.

  • Styrene is broadly used as a polymer and a copolymer and is useful in manufacturing contact lenses due to its high refractive index. This study used styrene with the cross-linker EGDMA (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate), HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) and the initiator AIBN (azobisisobutyronitrile) for copolymerization. Measurement of the physical characteristics of the copolymerized material showed that the refractive index is 1.4412 - 1.4628, water content 20 - 35%, visible transmittance 82.6 - 87% and the tensile strength 0.143 - 0.344 Kgf. Also, measurements showed that the refractive index and tensile strength increased while the water content decreased as the ratio of styrene increased. Based on the results of this study, the produced copolymer can be estimated to be suitable for use as a material for high performance functional contact lenses.
