Investigating Feasibility of Using Inferential Comprehension Test to Screen Students at Risk for Learning Disabilities (추론적 이해 특성 기반 학습장애 위험군 판별 가능성 탐색)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to analyze inferential comprehension ability of students at risk for learning disabilities compared with their peers and explore the possibilities of application of the inferential comprehension test for screening students at risk for leaning disabilities. Method: A total of students from 5th elementary schools participated in this study. First, t test was conducted to examine the differences between the general group and at risk students with learning disabilities. Second, the sensitivity and specificity were calculated using ROC analysis. Results: Findings of the study indicated that (1) students at risk for learning disabilities performed much lower than their peers on 6 tasks of inferential comprehension test and (2) especially inferencing meaning of the unknown words and making prediction were the useful indicators to diagnose the inferential abilities of students at risk for learning disabilities. Conclusion: According to the results, meaning and limitations of the study were discussed.

Effects of Scheme Based Strategy Instruction on Mathematical Word Problems of Ratio and Proportion for Underachievers or At-risk LD Students (학습부진 또는 학습장애 위험군 학생들의 비와 비례 문장제 문제해결 향상시키기: 도식기반교수의 역할)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of scheme based strategy Instruction on problem solving of word problems of ratio and proportion for students with under achievement or at risk for learning disabilities. Three $7^{th}$ graders of underachieving or at risk LD were participated in this study. Three steps of instructional experiment-testing baseline, intervention with schematic-based strategy, testing for the abilities of problem solving, generalization, & sustainability. The results showed that the schema-based strategy, FOPS was effective method for all three students enhancing problem solving abilities and for generalizing and sustaining the problem solving.
