purpose of this study was to examine the effect of Small-Scale Chemistry(below SSC) Lab Program on academic achievement and science-related affective domain of high school students. For this study, SSC Lab Program was developed on the basis of analyzing the chemistry part of the high school science textbook in the 7th curriculum. The experimental group was received SSC experiment lessons(below SSC group), and the comparison group was received traditional lessons. According to the result of this study, there was a significant difference (p<.01) between a SSC group and a comparison group in academic achievement. Also, there were significant differences in science-related affective domain, especially interest and scientific attitude. It showed that SSC Lab Program was more effective to improve the academic achievement and science-related affective domain. Student perceptions on SSC Lab Program were also discussed. Majority of students thought that SSC lab program was an effective and interesting way in science study.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the perspective of pre-service chemistry teachers on the learning situations of visually impaired students through scientific inquiry in a darkroom and to propose a teaching and learning method for students with visual impairments. Twenty-one pre-service chemistry teachers from college of education in Gyeongbuk were encouraged to explore individually hands-on model for the molecular structure of ice freely, and had a discussion with a one of the researchers during the activity. All the conversation and discussion were audio-taped and transcribed for analysis. As a result, pre-service chemistry teachers realized that learning situation of the visually impaired students was quite different with their perception while exploring and figuring out hands-on model of the molecular structure of ice in the darkroom. They already learned and could see this model by themselves but also recognized that visually impaired students had inconvenience and difficulty in learning science concepts. Based on these reflections, some pre-service chemistry teachers suggested directions for modification to fit visually impaired students' needs more.
This study examined the weight control and food habits in 160 obese children and 191 normal-weight children in 4th, 5th and 6th graders of some elementary schools in Gumi city. Regarding the subjects' self-recognition of their body shape, 27.8% of the normal weight group and 92.5% of the obese group acknowledged themselves to be obese. 58.9% of the normal weight group and 61.0% of the obese group were not satisfied with their own body shape and the difference between two groups was very small, 23.6% of the normal weight group and 87.5% of the obese group have tried to reduce weight. The main causative factor of weight gain that children themselves recognized was a sedentary life style. All the students showed a high rate of irregular and unbalanced diet. The obese children showed a significantly higher rate of skipping meals and eating meals faster than the normal weight children. More obese children disliked exercise, and did less excercise than the normal weight children. There was a negative correlation between the obesity index and the food habit score. In other words, they frequently skip a meals, eat in a hurry and dislike vegetables and dairy products. In addition, there was a positive correlation between the student's BMI and the parents' BMI. Overall, many normal weight children showed a high level of self-consciousness of being obese or underweight. Both groups showed a low degree of satisfaction with their own body shape. Therefore education for the distorted perception of body shape is needed because, even normal weight children have tried to reduce their weight. Obese children should be encouraged to exercise, not skip a meals and eat slowly. They also need a systematic education program on weight reduction and weight maintenance. Moreover, education on a healthy diet, healthy food habits, and healthy body shape are necessary for elementary school children.
The purpose of this study was to provide information about the development of curricula geared toward improving the oral health of college students and of oral-health education programs in an effort to teach college students to be knowledgeable about oral health throughout their lives. The subjects in this study were 455 students at three different colleges in Gyeonggi province, on whom a survey was conducted. As for the basic oral health care of the college students investigated, 54.5 percent had ever visited a dental clinic over the last year, and 34.7 percent had their teeth scaled over the last year. Regarding self-awareness of current oral health state, 77 percent felt there s something wrong with their oral health. Concerning the correlation of their oral health behavior and knowledge to each selected variable, better internal and external locus of control led to better oral health promotion behaviors and better oral health knowledge. As to their self-perception of oral health and influential factors, better toothbrushing, better dietary habits and periodical oral examination, which belonged to oral health promotion behaviors, were followed by better oral health locus of control, and higher concern for oral health led to better oral health locus of control as well. Better toothbrushing, better dietary habits, periodical oral examination and better internal locus of control were concurrent with higher interest in oral health. Better external locus of control and stronger concern for oral health were accompanied by better oral health promotion behaviors.

The purpose of this study was to assess the adolescents' perceptions of AIDS by reviewing the research findings on adolescents' knowledge and attitudes about AIDS, and to provide basic data for the development of AIDS prevention education program. Literature for the analysis was searched by using the terms 'AIDS', 'HIV', 'Adolescent', 'Student'. Finally, 17 articles from Korea and 3 from abroad were analysed. Major conclusions were as follows: 1. For the knowledge level of AIDS, most of the adolescents knew the definition, high risk group, and infection rout of AIDS. On the contrary, the knowledge level of the treatment of AIDS was low. 2. For the attitudes toward AIDS, the level of perceived severity was high. But the level of perceived susceptibility found to be low. Middle and high school students showed more positive attitudes toward AIDS patients than college students. Attitudes toward AIDS prevention education program were positive, but taking the blood test for the detection of AIDS was negative. 3. The experience rates of AIDS Education were ranged from 13.6% to 60%. Major channel for getting AIDS information were TV, newspaper and radio. The experience rates of sexual intercourse were ranged from 4% to 48.3%. The intention of using condom was 66.7%, but the rate of condom use was 38.4%. AIDS infection rates have been increasing rapidly among teens in recent years. Therefore, It is urgent to identify the determinants affecting AIDS related perception and preventive behavior, and to develop the prevention program for AIDS.
Urban planning and engineering undergraduate students need to understand the earth physical systems and that how human beings interact with the earth systems to planning and engineering urban area. The eco-friendly or geo-friendly design and planning of an urban area is a critical issue not only for economic benefits but more importantly for the sustainable future of urban life. However, little study has been done dealing with the urban engineering students' understanding of the earth as a system and what pedagogical approach is appropriate to improve their understanding of the earth as a system. This study is to investigate the impact of a purposely designed ESS course on urban engineering students' understanding of the earth as a system and their perceptions about the instructional approaches of the course on their learning competency. This study utilized a mixed-methodology with three main data sources: concept maps, student's perception survey about their learning competency, and course contents. Both the survey and concept maps were analyzed quantitatively as well as qualitatively. The result of this study showed that the urban engineering students' experience of team-based research about the topic they chose based on their own interest had a positive impact on their understanding of the earth as a system and their learning competency. The results of this study suggest that structuring and presenting the earth system contents in the context of engineering students' understanding and their future career be effective not only for the improvement of students' content knowledge but also for the enhancement of their learning competency such as creativity and problem-solving skills in everyday life situation.

Background: Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer among women worldwide. Studies evaluating the effect of health education on knowledge and perception of cervical cancer have generated conflicting results. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of educational intervention towards knowledge of HPV vacccination for cervical cancer prevention among pre-university students in Malaysia. Materials and Methods: This was an experimental before and after study performed between October 2014 and March 2015. Five hundred and eighty students were randomly assigned into intervention and control groups. All were required to complete both pre-intervention and post-intervention questionnaires. Those in the intervention group were given an information leaflet to read before answering the post-intervention questionnaire. Results: Almost half (48.3%) of the students had poor knowledge, with a score less than 5, and only 51 (8.8%) exhibited good knowledge, with a score of 11 and above. After educational intervention, the number of students with poor knowledge was reduced to 177 (29.3%) and the number of students who exhibited good knowledge increased to 148 (25.5%). Students from the intervention group demonstrated significant higher total scores in knowledge regarding 'HPV infection and cervical cancer' (p=0.000) and 'HPV vaccination and cervical cancer prevention' (p=0.000) during post-intervention as compared to the control group. Conclusions: Knowledge on HPV infection and vaccination is low among pre-university students. Educational intervention in the form of information leaflets appears effective in creating awareness and improving knowledge.
Since the advent of smart phone, a variety of text-based media are developed and used as popular communication tools even in mobile phone environment. This study explores differences in terms of users' perceived social presence level across different text-based media, specifically KakaoTalk, Facebook, SMS. A survey was conducted using items adopted from previous studies on social presence. 203 data points were collected and used for analysis. Across the whole sample, KakaoTalk is perceived as the highest in terms of perceived social presence level, followed by Facebook and SMS. Also, the users with higher level of sociality tends to reveal higher level of perceived social presence across all the media while younger and/or student users tend to maintain higher level of social presence perception across all the media. Further studies seem necessary investigating features of specific medium that may increase or decrease the perceived level of social presence.
KOREATECH has introduced a long-term co-op program called IPP (Industry Professional Practice) to address problems in engineering education of Korea since 2012. In order to evaluate and improve the IPP program, the IPP Center of KOREATECH has developed a comprehensive performance evaluation scheme on the basis of the Kirkpatrick's four stage performance evaluation model for training programs. This study aimed to analyze student questionnaire survey data from the IPP performance evaluation scheme, which was acquired before and after IPP terms in 2013 and measured students' perceptions on the five aspects of major competencies, non-major competencies, perception of and satisfaction with the IPP program and attitudes to occupation. The findings showed that the IPP program was effective to a certain degree at enhancing non-major competencies and attitudes to occupation of students. Participating students were quite satisfied with their jobs and companies. In the last part, several directions for improving the effectiveness of the IPP program were discussed.
School foodservice customers are likely to be tired of repeated cycle menus and their satisfaction for meals offered in school is inclined to be low. The menu variety is an important factor in increasing customer satisfaction. The purpose of this study was to investigate customer perspectives for applying rice based bread menus in order to add menu variety and promote using rice processed products in school foodservice. The questionnaire was distributed to 760 parent samples in elementary schools and 520 student samples in middle/high schools and a total of 665 and 387 usable data were collected, respectively. Food habits such as preference for cooking method, menu preference, food allergy and nutritional perspectives for menu and customer perception for rice based bread like quality, reliability, price, and purchasing convenience were investigated using 7 Likert scale. Also expected menu types applying rice based bread and offering frequency of rice bread menu were examined. Preference level for bread-based meals were moderate and students' preferences were slightly higher than parents. Menu types applying rice bread expected by middle/high school students were western food (49.4%), spaghetti (28.4%), set menu (13.7%), noodle (17.6%), Korean food (11.1%), Chinese food (10.9%) and porridge (4.5%). The most occupied rate was once in a week for expected offering frequency. Most respondents perceived that rice bread was more nutritive and qualitative than the wheat based one.
