The sectional methods of current design codes have been broadly used for the design of various kinds of reinforced concrete pile caps. Lately, the strut-tie model approach of current design codes also became one of the attracting methods for pile caps. However, since the sectional methods and the strut-tie model approach of current design codes have been established by considering the behaviors of structural concrete without D-regions and two-dimensional concrete structures with D-regions, respectively, it is inappropriate to apply the methods to the pile caps dominated by 3-dimensional structural behavior with disturbed stress regions. In this study, the refined 3-dimensional strut-tie models, which consider the strength characteristics of 3-dimensional concrete struts and nodal zones and the load-carrying capacity of concrete ties in tension regions, are proposed for the rational analysis and design of pile caps. To examine the validity of the proposed models and to verify the necessity of appropriate constituent elements for describing 3-dimensional structural behavior and load-transfer mechanism of pile caps, the ultimate strength of 78 reinforced concrete pile caps tested to failure was examined by the proposed models along with the sectional and strut-tie model methods of current design codes.
Continuous deep girders which transmit the gravity load from the upper wall to the lower columns have frequently long end shear spans between the boundary of the upper wall and the face of the lower column. This paper presents the results of tests and analyses performed on three 1:2.5 scale specimens with long end shear spans, (the ratios of shear-span/total depth: 1.8 < a/h < 2.5): one designed by the conventional approach using the beam theory and two by the strut-and-tie approach. The conclusions are as follows: (1) the yielding strength of the continuous RC deep girders is controlled by the tensile yielding of the bottom longitudinal reinforcements, being much larger than the nominal strength predicted by using the section analysis of the girder section only or using the strut-and-tie model based on elastic-analysis stress distribution. (2) The ultimate strengths are 22% to 26% larger than the yielding strength. This additional strength derives from the strain hardening of yielded reinforcements and the shear resistance due to continuity with the adjacent span. (3) The pattern of shear force flow and failure mode in shear zone varies depending on the amount of vertical shear reinforcement. And (4) it is necessary to take into account the existence of the upper wall in the analysis and design of the deep continuous transfer girders that support the upper wall with a long end shear span.

In current research, it was attempted a preliminary design and evaluation of non-uniform ultra high-strength concrete (UHSC) truss members. UHSC used here has the compressive strength of 180 MPa, the tensile strength of 8 to 20 MPa, and the tensile strain after cracks up to 2%. By the three-dimensional finite element stress analysis as well as strut-tie approach on concrete solid beams, the non-uniform truss shape of UHSC truss was designed with the architectural esthetic concept. In a series of examples, to compare with conventional concrete members, the proposed UHSC truss members have advantages in capabilities of the slender design with minimum weight with high performances under transverse loadings as well as the aesthetically non-uniform design for spatial structures.

There is a complex variation of stress in PSC anchorage zones and box girder diaphragms because of large concentrated load by prestress. According to the AASHTO LFRD design code, three-dimensional effects due to concentrated jacking loads shall be investigated using three-dimensional analysis procedures or may be approximated by considering separate submodels for two or more planes. In this case, the interaction of the submodels should be considered, and the model loads and results should be consistent. However, box girder diaphragms are 3-dimensional disturbed region which requires a fully three-dimensional model, and two-dimensional models are not satisfactory to model the flow of forces in diaphragms. In this study, the strengths of the prestressed box girder diaphragms are predicted using the 3-dimensional grid strut-tie model approach, which were tested to failure in University of Texas. According to the analysis results, the 3-dimensional strut-tie model approach can be possibly applied to the analysis and design of PSC box girder anchorage zones as a reasonable computer-aided approach with satisfied accuracy.
This paper presents a numerical study on structural behavior of hammer head pier cap beams, extended on verges and reinforced with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) plates. A 3-D finite element (FE) model along with a simplified analytical model are presented. Concrete damage plasticity (CDP) was adapted in the FE model and an analytical approach predicting the CFRP anchor strength was adapted in both FE and analytical model. Total five quarter-scaled pier cap beams with various CFRP reinforcing schemes were experimentally tested and analyzed with numerical approaches. Comparison between experimental results, FE results, analytical results and current ACI guideline predictions was presented. The FE results showed good agreement with experimental results in terms of failure mode, ultimate capacity, load-displacement response and strain distribution. In addition, the proposed strut-and-tie based analytical model provides the most accurate prediction of ultimate strength of extended cap beams among the three numerical approaches.
Recently rapid construction of bridge is a main interest in construction. A research on rapid construction of pier coping is urgently needed because pier, which is a bridge understructure, directly affect lane reduction and increase of social cost. Precast assembly method and pre-assembly method are the main subjects of rapid construction. But these researches have focused not on reduction of reinforcement amount, but on modifying production method of coping. Reinforcement amount of design specification is as much as that of coping under constructing. So different approach is needed for reduction of reinforcement amount. In this paper, design of pier coping using strut-tie model was proposed for reduction of reinforcement amount and improvement of constructability. Railway bridge pier coping under constructing was analyzed using a finite element method and designed using strut-tie model.
Test results of thirteen reinforced concrete corbels with shear span-to-depth ratio greater than unity are reported. The main variables studied were compressive strength of concrete, shear span-to-depth ratio and parameter of vertical stirrups. The test results indicate that the shear strengths of corbels increase with an increase in compressive strength of concrete and parameter of vertical stirrups. The shear strengths of corbels also increase with a decrease in shear span-to-depth ratio. The smaller the shear span-to-depth ratio of corbel, the larger the stiffness and the shear strength of corbel are. The higher the concrete strength of corbel, the higher the stiffness and the shear strength of corbel are. The larger the parameter of vertical stirrups, the larger the stiffness and the shear strength of corbel are. The softened strut-and-tie model for determining the shear strengths of reinforced concrete corbels is modified appropriately in this paper. The shear strengths predicted by the proposed model and the approach of ACI Code are compared with available test results. The comparison shows that the proposed model can predict more accurately the shear strengths of reinforced concrete corbels than the approach of ACI Code.

Reinforced concrete deep beams are commonly used in many structural applications, including transfer girders, pile caps, foundation walls, and offshore structures. The existing design methods were developed and calibrated using normal strength concrete test results, and their applicability th HSC deep beams must be assessed. For the shear strength prediction of high-strength concrete(HSC) deep beams, this paper proposed Softened Strut-and-Tie Model(SSTM) considered HSC and bending moment effect. The shear strength predictions of the refined model, the formulas the ACI 318-02 Appendix A STM, and Eq. of ACI 318-99 11.8 are compared with the collected experimental data of 74 HSC deep beams with compressive strength in the range of 49-78MPa . It is shown the shear strength of deep beam calculated by those equations are conservative on comparing test results. The comparison shows that the performance of the proposed SSTM is better than the ACI Code approach for all the parameters under comparison. The parameters reviewed include concrete strength, the shear span-depth ratio, and the ratio of horizontal and vertical reinforcement. The proposed SSTM gave a mean predicted to experimental ratio of 0.99, 32 percent higher than ACI 318-02 Code, however with the low coefficient variation.

This study is aimed to evaluate the shear strength of reinforced concrete deep beams subject to concentrated loads, using a simplified strut-tie model. For the shear strength prediction of deep beams, it is prerequisite to evaluate the effective width of strut and to verify the efficiency factors proposed by MacGregor et al.. The results analyzed by truss models have been compared with those calculated by domestic code for the existing data of 90 deep beam specimens. The shear strength of deep beams were reviewed with respect to concrete strength, the shear span-depth ratio, and the ratio of web reinforcements. The results showed that the shear strength of the proposed model gave a better agreement than the domestic code approach.

The behavior of concrete deep beams in shear is substantially influenced by beam size and shape, loading conditions, reinforcement details, and material properties. Therefore, it is not easy to predict the ultimate response of beams correctly and take into account all those factors in practical shear design. In this study, a grid softened strut-tie model approach for determining the shear strengths of various reinforced concrete deep beams is proposed. The validity of the approach is examined through the strength analysis of numerous reinforced concrete deep beams tested to failure. The approach can be further developed to improve the current deep beam design procedures by incorporating the actual shear resisting mechanisms of deep beams.
