Inclined piles are commonly used in civil engineering constructions where significant lateral resistance is required. Many researchers proved their positive performance on the seismic behavior of the supported structure and the piles themselves. However, most of these numerical studies were done within the framework of linear elastic or elastoplastic soil behavior, neglecting therefore the soil non-linearity at low and moderate soil strains which is questionable and could be misleading in dynamic analysis. The main objective of this study is to examine the influence of the pile inclination on the seismic performance of the soil-pile-structure system when both the linear elastic and the nonlinear soil models are employed. Based on the comparative responses, the adequacy of the soil's linear elastic behavior will be therefore evaluated. The analysis is conducted by generating a three-dimensional finite difference model, where a full interaction between the soil, structure, and inclined piles is considered. The numerical survey proved that the pile inclination can have a significant impact on the internal forces generated by seismic activity, specifically on the bending moment and shear forces. The main disadvantages of using inclined piles in this system are the bending forces at the head and pile-to-head connection. It is crucial to account for soil nonlinearity to accurately assess the seismic response of the soil-pile-structure system.

This paper presents a computer program for a 2-D fluid-structure-soil interaction analysis. With this computer program the fluid can be modeled by a spurious free 4-node displacement-based fluid element which uses rotational penalty and mass projection technique in conjunction with the one point reduced integration scheme to remove the spurious zero energy modes. The structure and near field soil are discretized by the standard finite elements while the unbounded far field soil are discretized by the standard finite elements while the unbounded far field soil is represented by the frequency dependent dynamic infinite elements. Sine this method models directly the fluid-structure-soil system it can be applied to the dynamci analysis of 2-D liquid storage structure with complex geometry. For the purpose of verification dynamic analyses for tanks on a rigid foundation and on compliant embankment are carried out. Comparison of the present results with those by ANSYS program shows good agreement.

This paper evaluates the effects of topographical and geotechnical irregularities on the dynamic response of the 2-D soil-structure systems under ground motion by coupling finite and infinite elements. A numerical procedure is employed, and a parametric study is carried out for single-faced slope topographies. It is concluded that topographic conditions may have important effects on the ground motion along the slope. The geotechnical properties of the soil will also have significantly amplified effects on the whole system motion, which cannot be neglected for design purposes. So, dynamic response of a soil-structure systems are primarily affected by surface shapes and geotechnical properties of the soil. Location of the structure is another parameter affecting the whole system response.
The main purpose of the current study is to develop the new coefficients for consideration of soil-structure interaction effects to find the elevated tank natural period. Most of the recommended relations to find the natural period just assumed the fixed base condition of elevated tank systems and the soil effects on the natural period are neglected. Two different analytical systems considering soil-structure- fluid interaction effects are recommended in the current study. Achieved results of natural impulsive and convective period, concluded from mentioned models are compared with the results of a numerical model. Two different sets of new coefficients for impulsive and convective periods are developed. The values of the developed coefficients directly depend to soil stiffness values. Additional results show that the soil stiffness not only has significant effects on natural period but also it is effective on liquid sloshing wave height. Both frequency content and soil stiffness have significant effects on the values of liquid wave height.

A wide literature review on Static Soil-Structure-Interaction (SSI) is done to highlight the key impacts of soil complexity on structural members of framed structures. Attention is paid to the developed approaches, i.e., conventional and Finite Element Method (FEM), to emphasize on deficiencies and merits of the proposed methods according to their applicability, accuracy and power to model and idealization of the superstructures as well as the soil continuum. Proposed hypothesis are much deeply discussed herein for better understanding which is normally neglected in literature review papers due to the large number of references and limit of space.
This paper presents dynamic infinite element formulations which have been developed for soil-structure interaction analysis both in frequency and in time domains by the present authors during the past twenty years. Axisymmetric, 2D and 3D layered half-space soil media were considered in the developments. The displacement shape functions of the infinite elements were established using approximate expressions of analytical solutions in frequency domain to represent the characteristics of multiple waves propagating into the unbounded outer domain of the media. The proposed infinite elements were verified using benchmark examples, which showed that the present formulations are very effective for the soil-structure interaction analysis either in frequency or in time domain. Example applications to actual interaction problems are also given to demonstrate the capability and versatility of the present methodology.
In this study, the accuracy and reliability of fully nonlinear method against equivalent linear method for dynamic analysis of soil-structure interaction is investigated comparing the predicted results of both numerical procedures with the results of experimental shaking table tests. An enhanced numerical soil-structure model has been developed which treats the behaviour of the soil and the structure with equal rigour. The soil-structural model comprises a 15 storey structural model resting on a soft soil inside a laminar soil container. The structural model was analysed under three different conditions: (i) fixed base model performing conventional time history dynamic analysis, (ii) flexible base model (considering full soil-structure interaction) conducting equivalent linear dynamic analysis, and (iii) flexible base model performing fully nonlinear dynamic analysis. The results of the above mentioned three cases in terms of lateral storey deflections and inter-storey drifts are determined and compared with the experimental results of shaking table tests. Comparing the experimental results with the numerical analysis predictions, it is noted that equivalent linear method of dynamic analysis underestimates the inelastic seismic response of mid-rise moment resisting building frames resting on soft soils in comparison to the fully nonlinear dynamic analysis method. Thus, inelastic design procedure, using equivalent linear method, cannot adequately guarantee the structural safety for mid-rise building frames resting on soft soils. However, results obtained from the fully nonlinear method of analysis fit the experimental results reasonably well. Therefore, this method is recommended to be used by practicing engineers.
The most important features of linear soil-foundation-structure interaction are reviewed, using stochastic modeling and considering kinematic interaction, inertial interaction, and structural distortion as three separate stages of the dynamic response to the free-field motion. The way in which each of the three dynamic stages modifies the spectral density of the motion is studied, with the emphasis being on interpretation of these results, rather than on the development of new analysis techniques. Structural distortion and inertial interaction analysis are shown to be precisely modeled as linear filtering operations. Kinematic interaction, though, is more complicated, even though it has a filter-like effect on the frequency content of the motion.
The importance of considering soil-structure interaction effect in the analysis and design of RC frame buildings is increasingly recognized but still not penetrated to the grass root level owing to various complexities involved. It is well established fact that the soil-structure interaction effect considerably influence the design of multi-storey buildings subjected to lateral seismic loads. The shear walls are often provided in such buildings to increase the lateral stability to resist seismic lateral loads. In the present work, the linear soil-structure analysis of a G+5 storey RC shear wall building frame resting on isolated column footings and supported by deformable soil is presented. The finite element modelling and analysis is carried out using ANSYS software under normal loads as well as under seismic loads. Various load combinations are considered as per IS-1893 (Part-1):2002. The interaction analysis is carried out with and without shear wall to investigate the effect of inclusion of shear wall on the total and differential settlements in the footings due to deformations in the soil mass. The frame and soil mass both are considered to behave in linear elastic manner. It is observed that the soil-structure interaction effect causes significant total and differential settlements in the footings. Maximum total settlement in footings occurs under vertical loads and inner footings settle more than outer footings creating a saucer shaped settlement profile of the footings. Each combination of seismic loads causes maximum differential settlement in one or more footings. Presence of shear wall decreases pulling/pushing effect of seismic forces on footings resulting in more stability to the structures.
