In this study, the newly constructed optical measurement system, which was mainly composed of a parametric tunable laser and a near infrared photoelectric multiplier, was introduced to clarify the optical characteristics of wood as discontinuous body with anisotropic cellular structure from the viewpoint of the time-of-flight near infrared spectroscopy (TOF-NIRS). The combined effects of the cellular structure of wood sample, the wavelength of the laser beam λ, and the detection position of transmitted light on the time resolved profiles were investigated in detail. The variation of the attenuance of peak maxima At, the time delay of peak maxima Δt and the variation of full width at half maximum Δw were strongly dependent on the feature of cellular structure of a sample and the wavelength of the laser beam. The substantial optical path length became about 30 to 35 times as long as sample thickness except the absorption band of water. Δt ${\times}$ Δw representing the light scattering condition increased exponentially with the sample thickness or the distance between the irradiation point and the end of sample. Around the λ=900-950 nm, there may be considerable light scattering in the lumen of tracheid, which is multiple specular reflection and easy to propagate along the length of wood fiber. Such tendency was remarkable for soft wood with the aggregate of thin layers of cell walls. When we apply TOF-NIRS to the cellular structural materials like wood, it is very important to give attention to the difference in the light scattering within cell wall and the multiple specular-like reflections between cell walls. We tried to express the characteristics of the time resolved profile on the basis of the optical parameters for light propagation determined by the previous studies, which were absorption coefficient K and scattering coefficient S from Kubelka-Munk theory and n from nth power cosine model of radiant intensity. The wavelength dependency of the product of K/S and n, which expressed the light-absorbing and -scattering condition and the degree of anisotropy, respectively, was similar to that of the time delay of peak maxima Δt. The variation of the time resolved profile is governed by the combination of these parameters. So, we can easily find the set of parameters for light propagation synthetically from Δt.

Clays coated with cationic surfactants (organoclays) have been investigated due to their effectiveness in sorbing organic compounds from water The objectives of this study were to (1) study the sorption characteristics or a cationic surfactant (HDTMA) to clay minerals; (2) examine the partitioning of HOC (naphthalene) to the adsorbed surfactants within the context of the first objective, and (3) develop overall HOC distribution coefficients that consider sorbed surfactant amounts. The sorption of hydrophobic organic contaminant was due to partitioning of the organics into the organic pseudophase created by the surfactant tail groups. Sorption of naphthalene by HDTMA-clays at different surfactant surface coverages revealed that the naphthalene K$\_$d/ values were affected by the surface concentration of surfactant. In our study the kaolinite was modified with a cationic surfactant to achieve different fractional organic carbon contents and different surfactant molecule configurations on the surface. All of the sorption isotherms were nearly linear and could be described by a distribution coefficient (K$\_$d/). The sorption of naphthalene by the surfactant-modified kaolinite was found to be dependent on the bound surfactant molecule configuration as well as on the fractional organic carbon content but halloysite was not affected by the increase of surfactant amounts. Results from this investigation provide additional insight into the role that sorbed surfactant structure plays in HOC partitioning.

This paper presents a sensorless speed control of cylindrical permanent magnet synchronous motors(PMSM) using an adaptive integral binary observer In view of composition with a main loop regulator and an auxiliary loop regulator, the binary observer has a property of the chattering alleviation in the constant boundary layer. However, the steady state estimation accuracy and robustness are dependent upon the width of the constant boundary. In order to improve the steady state performance of the binary observer, the binary observer is formed by adding extra integral dynamics to the switching hyperplane equation. With the help of integral characteristic, the rotor speed can be finely estimated and utilized for a sensorless speed controller for PMSM. Since the Parameters of the dynamic equations such as machine inertia or a viscosity friction coefficient are lot well known, there are many restrictions in the actual implementation. The proposed adaptive integral binary observer applies an adaptive scheme so that observer may overcome the problem caused by using the dynamic equations and the rotor speed is constructed by using the Lyapunov function. The observer structure and its design method are described. The experimental results of the proposed algorithm are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach.

A wind tunnel experiment for the flow around a 1/5 scale passenger vehicle model has been carried out. A 5-hole Pitot tube is used for measuring velocity distributions around the model and a scanivalve with 48 ports is used for measuring surface pressure distribution at various Reynolds numbers. In order to observe the flow on the surface and in the wake region, a flow visualization experiment has been performed using wool tuft with and without paper cones. In addition, a 2-dimensional viscous calculation considering only the mid-plane section of the model has been performed. A complex wake structure in the immediate rear of the model has been confirmed. The distributions of the surface pressure coefficient are not sensitively dependent on the Reynolds Number. In the first half of the model, they do not seem to vary form section to section. However, in the second half, they do vary from section to section, especially at the bottom surface, which indicates that the cross flow vortex is more affected by the bottom surface than the top surface. The qualitative agreement of the measured and calculated velocity field also explains the usefulness of the 2-dimensional calculation in the limited sense.
Quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSARs) on the inhibition activities by oleanolic acid analogues (1-19) as a potent inhibitor against protein tyrosine phosphatase-1B were studied quantitatively using 2D-QSAR and HQSAR methodologies. The inhibition activity was dependent on the variations of $R_{4-}$substituent, and as shown in 2D-QSAR model ($r^2=0.928$), it has a tendency to increase as the negative Randic Indice (RI) goes up. The size of the molecular fragments used in HQSAR varied from five to eight. The fragment distinctions had the best statistic value, whose predictability is $q^2=0.785$ and correlation coefficient is $r^2=0.970$, on condition of connections. From the atomic contribution maps, the factor that contributes to the inhibition activities is the $C_{15}{\sim}C_{17}$ bond in the D ring. From the analysis result of these two the models, the structural distinctions and descriptors that contribute to the inhibition activities were obtained.

This paper presents sensorless speed control of a cylindrical permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) using the adaptive integral binary observer. In view of the composition with a main loop regulator and an auxiliary loop regulator, the normal binary observer has the feature of chattering alleviation in the constant boundary layer. However, the steady state estimation accuracy and robustness are dependent upon the thickness of the constant boundary layer. In order to improve the steady state performance of the binary observer, a new binary observer is formed by the addition of extra integral dynamics to the existing switching hyperplane equation. Also, because the parameters of the dynamic equations such as machine inertia or viscosity friction coefficient are not well known and these values can be changed during normal operations, there are many restrictions in the actual implementation. The proposed adaptive integral binary observer applies an adaptive scheme so that the observer may overcome the problems caused by using dynamic equations. The rotor speed is constructed by using the Lyapunov function. The observer structure and its design method are described. The experimental results of the proposed algorithm are presented to prove the effectiveness of the approach.
Tetraazamacrocyclic ion exchangers tethered to Merrifield peptide resin (DTDM, TTTM) were prepared and the ion exchange capacity of these was characterized. The isotope separation of lithium was determined using breakthrough method of column chromatography. The isotope separation coefficient was strongly dependent on the ligand structure by Glueckauf's theory. We found that the isotope separation coefficients were increased as the values of distribution coefficients were increased. In this experiment the lighter isotope, 6Li was enriched in the resin phase, while the heavier isotope, 7Li in the solution phase. The ion radius of lighter isotope, 6Li was shorter than the heavier isotope, 7Li. The hydration number of lithium ion with the same charge became small as mass number was decreased. Because 6Li was more strongly retained in the resin than 7Li, the isotopes of lithium were separated with subsequent enrichment in the resin phase.
$MnBi_{1-x}Ti_x$ (x = 0, 0.4, 0.7, 1) alloys were prepared by arc-melting, followed by heat treatment. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) were used to measure and investigate the phase structure and magnetic properties. The temperature dependent magnetization curves indicate that the phase transitions between LTP and HTP MnBi occur with heating or cooling in $MnBi_{1-x}Ti_x$ ($x{\leq}0.7$) samples. However, MnTi samples are in $Mn_2Ti$ single-phase, with very low magnetic properties. Furthermore, the coercivity exhibits a positive temperature coefficient. The results show that the optimal content of Ti for the coercivity of $MnBi_{1-x}Ti_x$ alloy is x = 0.4. For MnBi sample, the coercivity reaches a maximum value of 1.13 T at 550 K. However, the remanence and energy product show apparent decrease with the addition of Ti in $MnBi_{1-x}Ti_x$ alloys.
The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between physical impairments and daily activities on the basis of the outcome measurements in stroke patients. Seventy-six stroke patients participated in this study. Two physical therapists evaluated 3 clinical common measurements, i.e., the Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA), the Berg Balance Scale (BBS), and the Functional Independence Measure (FIM). Multiple regression analysis was used, as the dependent variables were the BBS and FIM; the independent variables were post-stroke duration, FMA of Upper Extremity (FMU), and FMA of Lower Extremity (FML). In the regression equation of the BBS, the coefficient of determination ($R^2$) was .383, and the FML was found to be the most important variable for determining the BBS score. In the regression equation of the FIM, $R^2$ was .531, and the FML was found to be the most important variable for determining the FIM. These results suggest that there is a need to determine the function of activities on the basis of the physical impairments of stroke patients. More variable measurement tools on the levels of body function and structure, as well as activity limitations are required.

Electronic and photovoltaic characteristics of two sensitizers (TA-BTD-CA and TA-BTD-St-CA), composed of a different $\pi$-conjugation in the linker group, have been investigated by theoretical and experimental methods. The electronic structure, transition dipole moment and oscillator strengths of two sensitizers have been scrutinized by using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) method. The LUMO level and the oscillator strength of TA-BTD-St-CA was higher than that of TA-BTD-CA, which may facilitate the electron injection process as well as increase the absorption coefficient. The relative efficiencies of the electron injection from the excited sensitizer to nanocrystalline TiO2 and SnO2 films have also been investigated by nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. The relative electron injection efficiency of TA-BTD-St-CA exhibited similar injection efficiency for two different semiconductors. However, in the case of TA-BTD-CA sensitizer, electron injection into SnO2 was approximately three times larger than that into TiO2. This enhancement of electron injection of TA-BTD-CA for the SnO2 is due to the increment of the driving force caused by positive shift of conduction band of semiconductor, which was also confirmed from the investigation for the photovoltaic characteristics according to the electrolyte additive, such as LiI additive.
