  • This study aimed to develop a seismic retrofit technique using a steel frame which can be easily transported and assembled on site. This enables the retrofit steel frame to be easily attached to an existing structure minimizing the unwanted gap between the structure and the steel frame assembly. A one-story one-bay RC frame was tested with and without seismic retrofit using the proposed steel frame to verify the seismic retrofit effect of the proposed system, and an analysis model was developed in Opensees for seismic performance evaluation of a case study soft first-story model structure retrofitted with the developed steel frame assembly. Seismic performance of the model structure was also evaluated considering soil structure interaction effect. The experimental study confirmed that the proposed seismic retrofit system can be applied effectively to improve the seismic performance of framed structures. Time history analysis results of the model structure showed that the proposed steel frame assembly was effective in increasing the seismic load resisting capacity of the soft first-story structure. However more steel frame assemblies were required to satisfy the given performance limit state of the model structure located on weak soil due to the negative soil-structure interaction effect.

  • In this paper, we present a novel approach for the structure of Fuzzy Neural Network(FNN) based on wavelet function and apply this network structure to the modeling of chaotic nonlinear systems. Generally, the wavelet fuzzy model(WFM) has the advantage of the wavelet transform by constituting the fuzzy basis function(FBF) and the conclusion part to equalize the linear combination of FBF with the linear combination of wavelet functions. However, it is very difficult to identify the fuzzy rules and to tune the membership functions of the fuzzy reasoning mechanism. Neural networks, on the other hand, utilize their learning capability for automatic identification and tuning. Therefore, we design a wavelet based FNN structure(WFNN) that merges these advantages of neural network, fuzzy model and wavelet transform. The basic idea of our wavelet based FNN is to realize the process of fuzzy reasoning of wavelet fuzzy system by the structure of a neural network and to make the parameters of fuzzy reasoning be expressed by the connection weights of a neural network. And our network can automatically identify the fuzzy rules by modifying the connection weights of the networks via the gradient descent scheme. To verify the efficiency of our network structure, we evaluate the modeling performance for chaotic nonlinear systems and compare it with those of the FNN and the WFM.

  • Accurate peak response estimation of a seismically excited structure with frictional damping system (FDS) is very difficult since the structure with FDS shows nonlinear behavior dependent on the structural period, loading characteristics, and relative magnitude between the frictional force and the excitation load. Previous studies have estimated the peak response of the structure with FDS by replacing a nonlinear system with an equivalent linear one or by employing the response spectrum obtained based on nonlinear time history and statistical analysis. In case that earthquake excitation is defined probabilistically, corresponding response of the structure with FDS becomes to have probabilistic distribution. In this study, nonlinear time history analyses were performed for the structure with FDS subjected to artificial earthquake excitation generated using Kanai-Tajimi filter. An equation for the probability density function (PDF) of the displacement response is proposed by adapting the PDF of the normal distribution. Coefficients of the proposed PDF are obtained by regression of the statistical distribution of the time history responses. Finally, the correlation between the resulting PDFs and statistical response distribution is investigated.

  • Usually, Evolutionary Algorithms are considered more efficient for optimal system design, However, the performance of the system is determined by fitness function and system environment. In this paper, in order to overcome the limitation of the performance by this factor, we propose a co-evolutionary method that two populations constantly interact and coevolve. In this paper, we apply coevolution to neural network's evolving. So, one population is composed of the structure of neural networks and other population is composed of training patterns. The structure of neural networks evolve to optimal structure and, at the same time, training patterns coevolve to feature patterns. This method prevent the system from the limitation of the performance by random design of neural network structure and inadequate selection of training patterns. In this time neural networks are trained by evolution strategies that are able to apply to the unsupervised learning. And in the coding of neural networks, we propose the method to maintain nonredundancy and character preservingness that are essential factor of genetic coding. We show the validity and the effectiveness of the proposed scheme by applying it to the visual servoing of RV-M2 robot manipulators.

  • The present piping modeling method requires detailed inputs from a designer to generate a piping model, and thus it takes much time for the designer to perform such task. Moreover, the piping model has no relation with that of hull structure. Thus, it is time-consuming and requires much effort if design changes arise. In this study, a method that generates quickly many pipes using a pipe tray and a conversion method that converts automatically the pipes into objects related with the hull structure are proposed. A piping modeling system based on the proposed methods is developed. The applicability of the developed system is demonstrated by applying it to the generation of the piping model of a deadweight 300,000ton VLCC(Very Large Crude oil Carrier). The results show that the developed system can quickly generate the piping model in relation with the hull structure.

  • This paper proposes a systematic method to develop short-term electrical load forecasting systems using neuro-fuzzy models. The primary goal of the proposed method is to improve the performance of the prediction model in terms of accuracy and reliability. For this, the proposed method explores the advantages of the structure learning of the neuro-fuzzy model. The proposed load forecasting system first builds an initial structure off-line for each hour of four day types and then stores the resultant initial structures in the initial structure bank. Whenever a prediction needs to be made, the proposed system initializes the neuro-fuzzy model with the appropriate initial structure stored and trains the initialized model. In order to demonstrate the viability of the proposed method, we develop an one hour ahead load forecasting system by using the real load data collected during 1993 and 1994 at KEPCO. Simulation results reveal that the prediction system developed in this paper can achieve a remarkable improvement on both accuracy and reliability compared with the prediction systems based on multilayer perceptrons, radial basis function networks, and neuro-fuzzy models without the structure learning.

  • The purpose of this study was to find out the most reasonable design in the superstructure of an underground parking lot which needs to be considered with the economic efficiency being influenced on the subdivision price, construction duration, workability and the maintenance of crack and leakage status of apartment house. In this research, we've evaluated the fitness for the superstructure of an underground parking lot by examination of construction constraint, which was based on the calculated data of structural design and quantity survey. The results of this study are summarized as follows. 1. The system of the absent structure of beam is proper structure for economic efficiency, construction duration and workability, but it is disadvantageous at the side of maintenance efficiency because of the many part of large slab. In the opposite direction, the establishing structure of beam has the advantages of structural stability except economic efficiency, construction duration and workability 2. It's required a proper selection for the views being contrary to each other which the owners considers good quality, on the other hand, the contractors consider construction duration and workability. 3. In making a selection for the superstructure of an underground parking lot, we have concluded that it is the most important to choose the proper structure for the demanded performance by contrasting with two system. • The connection of the steel structure serves to transmit external forces to the main components. The same is true for the behavior of modular systems composed mainly of steel or composite members. In this study, the joint performance of the composite and steel modules proposed was evaluated. The analytical models of the two joint types were constructed and were subjected to cyclic loading to assess the safety and the energy dissipation capacity of the joint types. The analysis results of the joints showed that the joints of the modular systems remain stable when the joint rotation reached the seismic performance limit state of the 0.02 rad required for steel intermediate moment frame. It was also observed that the joint of the composite modular system showed higher energy dissipation capacity compared with the steel modular system.

  • A helmet is essential for safety when operating personal mobility. However, user's actual helmet wear rate is low due to the inconvenience of wearing and poor ventilation. In this study, a new helmet structure with improved ventilation for personal mobility devices was designed. To design a new structure with improved breathability compared to the existing helmet while satisfying the safety regulations for the helmet, a generative design method was applied to the shock-absorbing liner of the helmet. In addition, other materials were applied to create a structure with improved ventilation while maintaining safety. The generated design result was verified for shock absorption through simulation. As a result of the study, EPS, the current material was replaced with CFRP and Kevlar, and the structure was changed. This design was judged to satisfy safety regulations against impact. The new helmet structure is expected to improve the helmet usability for personal mobility and increase the helmet wear rate of users.

  • This study structurally analyzes major inefficiency of Korea's healthcare delivery system by utilizing the systems thinking. In particular, the phenomenon of patient's concentrated visits to large hospitals, waste of resource due to competitions between clinics and large hopitals, and the structure of oversupply were visualized using the causal loop diagram. The inefficient structure of healthcare delivery system can be understood more clearly by utilizing the major system archetypes of 'success to the successful', 'tragedy of commons', 'escalation' and 'limits to growth'. This study also finds solution from archetypal structure suggested by Wolstenholme. The inefficient status of healthcare delivery system might be explained by the 'out of control' archetype. In conclusion, the public resources such as the national health insurance need to be acknowledged as the entire achievement. All the participants should cooperate with each other in order to improve the inefficiency of the healthcare delivery system. In addition, the arrangement of incentive system for cooperation, acceleration of health information technology, and development of innovative business models make the sustainable healthcare delivery system.
