  • In this research, the structural analysis and safety evaluation for Sungnyemun -No.1 national treasure of Korea- was performed. Roof loads were calculated in detail, and structural analysis model was constructed using Midas Gen ver.820. Static structural analysis under vertical loads was performed and safety of main structural members and serviceability of main horizontal members were evaluated. To evaluate dynamic characteristics of Sungnyemun, both field measurements by impact hammer test and eigenvalue analysis by structural analysis software were performed and the results were compared. Sungnyemun showed rooms in their structural capacity.

  • In this work, the structural integrity was investigated of the structural design results of internal components for the aircraft engine. The radiator and intercooler were combined with the internal components of the engine. Therefore, the safety of the radiator and intercooler was investigated during flight conditions. The structural integrity was evaluated through structural analysis, using the finite element analysis method. The acceleration load for structural design and analysis was considered. The structural safety evaluation found the structural design results to be valid.

  • An evaluation of the accidental limit state (ALS) for design of a semi-submersible drilling rig is one of the essential design requirements as well as ultimate limit state (ULS) and fatigue limit state (FLS). This paper describes the ALS evaluation on the explosion accident at shale shaker room of semi-submersible drilling rig. There are three steps for the ALS evaluation such as structural analysis at concept design, risk based safety design and structural analysis at detailed design. For the ALS evaluation at concept design, conceptual explosion overpressure from the Rule guided by the classification society was used in the structural analysis that was carried out using LS-DYNA. To set up the design accidental load (DAL), explosion analysis was carried out using FLACS taking safety barriers into consideration. Then, the structural analysis was carried out applying DAL for the ALS evaluation at detailed design. Through the ALS evaluation on the explosion at shale shaker room, the importance of the risk based safety design was described.

  • Today, a great effort to develop PBSD procedure to be utilized in Korea is given by domestic structural engineers, academics, and governmental organizations. After Great East Japan Earthquake (2011) took place, lots of clients in Korea became to concern of their buildings so that requests of seismic performance evaluation and seismic rehabilitation for existing buildings have been gradually increased. Such interests in seismic events initiated a rapid development of a series of guidelines for seismic performance evaluation and seismic performance enhancement. For new buildings, however, design guidelines for PBSD are yet well prepared in Korea and prescriptive design methods are dominant design procedure still. Herein, seismicity demands used in seismic performance evaluation and some important design parameters in NLRH are introduced. Some project examples for seismic performance evaluation and rehabilitation applying passive energy dissipation devices are also described in the latter part of paper.

  • In this paper, structural design requirements and safety evaluation criteria of the spent nuclear fuel disposal canister are studied for deep geological deposition. Since the spent nuclear fuel disposal canister emits high temperature heats and much radiation, its careful treatment is required. For that, a long term(usually 10,000 years) safe repository for the spent nuclear fuel disposal canister should be secured. Usually this repository is expected to locate at a depth of 500m underground. The canister which is designed for the spent nuclear fuel disposal in a deep repository in the crystalline bedrock is a solid structure with cast iron insert, corrosion resistant overpack and lid and bottom, and entails an evenly distributed load of hydrostatic pressure from underground water and high pressure from swelling of bentonite buffer. Hence, the canister must be designed to withstand these high pressure loads. If the canister is not designed for all possible external loads combinations, structural defects such as plastic deformations, cracks, and buckling etc. may occur in the canister during depositing it in the deep repository. Therefore, various structural analyses must be performed to predict these structural problems like plastic deformations, cracks, and buckling. Structural safety evaluation criteria of the canister are studied and defined for the validity of the canister design prior to the structural analysis of the canister. And structural design requirements(variables) which affect the structural safety evaluation criteria should be discussed and defined clearly. Hence this paper presents the structural design requirements(variables) and safety evaluation criteria of the spent nuclear fuel disposal canister.

  • Deterioration of the educational facilities built before 1985 is a serious situation. The purpose of this study is to present the efficient remodeling method of old educational facilities. This paper, part II, presents the systemic and synthetic judgment method of deterioration grade of structural components. Deterioration grade of the whole structural components are judged by synthetic evaluation score which is the total of the score of ten evaluation items. And we added the importance coefficient of the viewpoint of four performance to each evaluation item.

  • In a various regulations and standards related to the spent fuel storage, the storage casks should be designed to sustain the structural integrity under the accident conditions of predicted operation and design criteria. These conditions for the structural evaluation requires the drop, tip-over, wind like tornado and typhoon, flood and earthquake. This paper describes the load cases and conceptual evaluation method for the structural evaluation. Preliminary safety analysis of the concrete storage system were peformed.

  • Structural integrity evaluation is important item in the aircraft certification. Recently, it is designed for limit load, material weakness about fatigue and corrosion, damage by bird strike in flight to evaluate structural integrity of aircraft. And static/fatigue analysis are performed to secure structural integrity, it was verified by static and fatigue tests. To evaluate the structural integrity of small aircraft tail, structural integrity was calculated by the finite element analysis. In the present study, finite element analysis are performed to pick out load cases in flight occurrence, and secure margin of safety to evaluate structural integrity of KC-100 tail unit. The proprieties of finite element analysis results are compared with the static structure test results. The estimation process of structural integrity for small aircraft tail may help the design.

  • Seismic performance evaluation of existing building usually needs much time and man power, especially in case of nonlinear analysis. Many data interaction steps for model transfer are needed and engineers should spend much time with simple works like data entry. Those time-consuming steps could be reduced by applying computerized and automated modules. In this study, computational platform for seismic performance evaluation was made with several computerized modules. StrAuto and floor load transfer module offers a path that can transfer most linear model data to nonlinear analysis model so that engineers can avoid a lot of repetitive work for input information for the nonlinear analysis model. And the new nonlinear property generator also helps to get the nonlinear data easily by importing data from structural design program. To evaluate the effect of developed modules on each stages, seismic performance evaluation of example building was carried out and the lead time was used for the quantitative evaluation.
