  • In this study, fluid/structure coupled analyses have been conducted f3r 3-D stator and rotor configuration. Advanced computational analysis system based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and computational structural dynamics (CSD) has been developed in order to investigate fluid/structure responses of general stator-rotor configurations. To solve the fluid/structure coupled problems, fluid domains are modeled using the structural grid system with dynamic moving and local deforming techniques. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with Spalart-Allmaras (S-A) and SST ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ turbulence models are solved for unsteady flow problems. A fully implicit time marching scheme based on the Newmark direct integration method is used for computing the coupled aeroelastic governing equations of the 3-D turbine blades for fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems. Detailed fluid/structure analysis responses for stator-rotor interaction flow conditions are presented to show the physical performance and flow characteristics.

  • An advanced aeroelastic analysis using a computational structural dynamics (CSD), finite element method (FEM) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is presented in this Paper. A general aeroelastic analysis system is originally developed and applied to realistic design problems in the transonic flow region, where strong shock wave interactions exist. The present computational approach is based on the modal-based coupled nonlinear analysis with the matched-point concept and adopts the high-speed parallel processing technique on the low-cost network based PC-clustered machines. It can give very accurate and useful engineering data on the structural dynamic design of advanced flight vehicles. For the nonlinear unsteady aerodynamics in high transonic flow region, Euler equations using the unstructured grid system have been applied to easily consider complex configurations. It is typically shown that the advanced numerical approach can give very realistic and practical results for design engineers and safe flight tests. One can find that the present study conducts a virtual flutter flight test which are usually very dangerous in reality.

  • Short antimicrobial peptide, A4W, have been studied by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation in an explicit dodecylphosphocholine (DPC) micelle. Peptide was aligned with DPC micelle and transferred new peptide-micelle coordinates within the same solvent box using specific micelle topology parameters. After initial energy minimization and equilibration, the conformation and orientation of the peptide were analyzed from trajectories obtained from the RMD (restrained molecular dynamics) or the subsequent free MD. Also, the information of solvation in the backbone and the side chain of the peptide, hydrogen bonding, and the properties of the dynamics were obtained. The results showed that the backbone residues of peptide are either solvated using water or in other case, they relate to hydrogen bonding. These properties could be a critical factor against the insertion mode of interaction. Most of the peptide-micelle interactions come from the hydrophobic interaction between the side chains of peptide and the structural interior of micelle system. The interaction of peptide-micelle, electrostatic potential and hydrogen bonding, between the terminal residues of peptide and the headgroups in micelle were observed. These interactions could be effect on the structure and flexibility of the peptide terminus.

  • This paper examined the stability of high-dense dislocation substructures (HDDSs) associated with martensite laths in High Cr steels supposed to be used for FBR, based on a series of dislocation dynamics (DD) simulations. The DD simulations considered interactions of dislocations with impurity atoms and precipitates which substantially stabilize the structure. For simulating the dissociation processes, a point defect model is developed and implemented into a discrete DD code. Wall structure composed of high dense dislocations with and without small precipitates were artificially constructed in a simulation cell, and the stability/instability conditions of the walls were systematically investigated in the light of experimentally observed coarsening behavior of the precipitates, i.e., stress dependency of the coarsening rate and the effect of external stress. The effect of stress-dependent coarsening of the precipitates together with application of external stress on the subsequent behavior of initially stabilized dislocation structures was examined.

  • In this research performed on a pneumatic actuator, the air flow entering and exiting the cylinder, and the motion and deformation characteristics of the piston during operation of the actuator, were predicted. This was carried out by utilizing an FSI(Fluid-Structural Interaction) analysis technique that incorporates principles in computational fluid dynamics and structural stress analysis, and potential performance degradation factors were examined. Analysis results indicated that performance improvements could be made through design modifications. These include adding an inlet and outlet on the upper and lower sections of the cylinder in the conventional model, and increasing the number of sites for piston guide bars from three to four.

  • The dynamic equations for an arbitrary cluster comprising rigid spheres or assemblies of spheres (subclusters) encountered in granular-type systems are considered. The system is treated within the framework of multibody dynamics. It is shown that for an arbitrary cluster topology the governing equations can be given in an explicit scalar from. The derivation is based on the D'Alembert principle, on inertial coordinate system for each body and direct utilization of the path matrix describing the topology. The scalar form of the equations is important in computer simulations of flow of granular-type materials. An illustrative example of a three-body system is given.

  • The use of the shape memory alloy, Nitinol wire, is investigated as an actuator for enhancing the damping in structural vibration systems. The first-order mathematical model of the Nitinol wire is obtained from the experimental data for an actuator. Finite element method is utilized for the strain gage sensor model, which is installed at the root of cantilever beam. A simple system, cantilever beam, is built as a flexible structural system to implement a control law with the Nitinol wire actuator. The system model including sensor and actuator is derived, which agrees with the experimental results. The actuator dynamics is augmented with the system so as to design PI controller and the one of robust controllers, LQG/LTR controller, and the control laws are implemented experimentally. The experimental study shows the feasibility of utilizing the Nitinol wire as an actuator for the purpose of vibration control.

  • In metal cutting chatter is the unstable cutting phenomenon which caused by the interaction between the dynamics of the chip removal process and the structural dynamics of machine tool. When the vibration and chatter on, it reduces tool life and results in poor surface roughness and low productivity of the machining process. In order to observe the effect of chatter on the turned surface, the surface simulation model based on the surface-shaping system are developed under the ideal condition and the occurrence of the regenerative chatter, and it is compared with experiment of profile. • In metal cutting, chatter is an unstable cutting phenomenon which is due to the interaction of the dynamics of the chip removal process and the structural dynamics of machine tool. When chatter occurs, it reduces tool life and results in poor surface roughness and low productivity of the machining process. In this study, the experiments have been conducted to investigate phenomenon of the chatter in CNC lathe without cutting fluid. In the experiments, two accelerometers were attached at the tail stock and tool holder and the signals were caught. In order to observe the effect of chatter on the surface roughness profiles, surface roughness profiles were generated under the ideal condition and the occurrence of the chatter based on the surface simulation model using surface-shaping system. Finally, the result of experiment and simulation have been compared.
