A reliability analysis is straightforwardly applied to the sloped coastal structures against the random wave overtopping. A reliability function can be directly derived from a empirical formula in which may take into account many variables associated with the random wave overtopping. The probability of failure exceeded the allowable overtopping discharge can be evaluated as a function of dimensionless crest height with some reasonable statistical properties and distribution functions of each random variable. Some differences of probabilities of failure occurred from variations of the slopes of structures as well as types of armour are investigated into quantitatively. Additionally, the effects of the crest width of units placed in front of the concrete cap on the probability of failure may be analyzed. Finally, the sensitivity analyses are carried out with respect to the uncertainties of random variables. It is found that the overall characteristics similar to the known experimental results are correctly represented in this reliability analyses. Also, it should be noted that the probabilities of failure may be quantitatively obtained for several structural and hydraulic conditions, which never assess in the deterministic design method. Thus, it may be possible for determination on the crest height of sloped coastal structures to consider the probability of failure of wave overtopping, by which may be increased the efficiency of practical design.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the salt water resistance of concrete depending on various types of cement. In this regard, 5 types of concrete were selected and their strength, void ratio and chloride ion diffusion characteristics were tested, and mutual correlation were analyzed. From the test results, the compressive strength and void ratio of concrete which using Type V cement was as good as Type I cement at long-term ages but the chloride diffusion coefficient of Type V cement was larger than Type I cement. And the concrete replacing some portion of the Type I cement with fly ash was superior in the cases of compressive strength, void ratio and the resistance of chloride ion permeation compared to the Type I cement with the lapse of ages. On the other hand, the compressive strength, the void ratio and the chloride diffusion coefficient of the concrete all indicated high levels of the correlation coefficient and the coefficient of determination regardless of the type of cement.

This study is a part of research for developing the technologies of long life pavements having more than 40-year design life. The objective of this study is to develop the simplified design procedure for determining the layer thickness and modulus of the long life pavement. A synthetic database was established using the finite element program of a pavement structure with various combinations of layer thickness and modulus. The synthetic database includes the structural and material information, surface deflection, and critical pavement responses. Using the developed synthetic database, this paper suggests the minimum layer thickness and modulus for long life pavements bared on the limited strain level concept. Results demonstrate that the pavement greater than 410mm of total AC layer thickness is considered as the long life pavements regardless of the material characteristics and thickness in each layer. To become a long life pavement, a total thickness of AC layer should be greater than 250mm. The design procedure for determining the layer thickness and modulus of the pavements with AC layer thickness ranging from 250 to 410mm is also presented in this paper.

Surface cracks in concrete are common defects that can cause significant deterioration and failure of concrete structures. Therefore, the early detection, assessment, and repair of the cracks in concrete are very important for the structural health. Among studies for crack depth assessment, self-calibrating surface wave transmission method seems to be a promising nondestructive technique, though it is still difficult in determination of the crack depth due to the variation of the experimentally obtained transmission functions. In this paper, the spectral energy transmission method is proposed for the crack depth estimation in concrete structures. To verify this method, an experimental study was carried out on a concrete slab with various surface-opening crack depths. Finally, effectiveness of the proposed method is validated by comparing the conventional time-of-flight and cutting frequency based methods. The results show an excellent potential as a practical and reliable in-situ nondestructive method for the crack depth estimation in concrete structures.
Succeed to structural elucidation, the anthocyanins in the Korean restive Brassica juncea were quantitatively investigated. And obtained results were as follows: 1. The amount of total anthocyanins showed a little difference according to harvesting season, such as 175.5mg% in spring and 192.7mg% in autumn, as peonidin-3-glucoside. 2. By colored degree of leaf, the amount of total anthocyanins showed 290.2mg% in both side colored, 73.6mg% in one side colored and 40.0mg% in none colored as peonidin-3-glucoside. 3. The characteristic color of fresh Brassica juncea couldn't he detected with naked eyes within the limits of 40mg% of anthocyanin as peonidin-3-glucoside. 4. There were no differences with the harvesting season and the colored degree in the ratio of two kinds of anthocyanins, which was consisted of 57.3% of peonidin-3-glucoside and 44.7% of peonidin-3-galactoside.
Earthquake can occur anywhere in the world and it is essential to design important members in special structures based on maximum possible forces that can be produced in them under severe earthquake. In addition, since the earthquake is an accidental phenomena and there are no similar earthquakes, therefore the possibility of strong earthquakes should be taken into account in earthquake-resistant design of important structures. Based on this viewpoint, finding the critical acceleration which maximizes internal forces is an essential factor in structural design. This paper proposes critical excitation method to compute the critical acceleration in design of important members in special structures. These critical accelerations are computed so that the columns' internal shear force at the base of the structure at each time step is maximized under constraints on ground motion. Among computed critical accelerations (of each time step), the one which produces maximum internal shear force is selected. A numerical example presents to show the efficiency of critical excitation method in determining the maximum internal shear force and base moment under variety of constraints. The results show that these method can be used to compute the resonant earthquake which have large enough effective duration of earthquake strong motion (between 12.86 sec to 13.38 sec) and produce the internal shear force and base moment for specific column greater than the same value for selected earthquakes in constructing the critical excitation (for different cases about 2.78 to 1.29 times the San Fernando earthquake). Therefore, a group of them can be utilized in developing the response spectrum for design of special structures.
An experimental method was suggested for obtaining fracture toughness ($K_{Ic}$) and the tensile strength (${\sigma}_t$) of chopped strand glass fiber reinforced polymer concretes (PC). Semi-circular bend (SCB) specimens subjected to three-point bending were used for conducting the experiments on the PC material. While the edge cracked SCB specimen could be used to evaluate fracture toughness, the tensile strength was obtained from the un-cracked SCB specimen. The experiments showed the practical applicability of both cracked and un-cracked SCB specimens for using as suitable techniques for measuring $K_{Ic}$ and ${\sigma}_t$ in polymer concretes. In comparison with the conventional rectangular bend beam specimen, the suggested SCB samples need significantly less material due to its smaller size. Furthermore, the average values of ${\sigma}_t$ and $K_{Ic}$ of tested PC were approximately 3.5 to 4.5 times the corresponding values obtained for conventional concrete showing the improved strength properties of PC relative to the conventional concretes.
In this study, an effective load increment method for multi modal adaptive non-linear static (pushover) analysis (NSA) for building type structures is presented. In the method, lumped plastisicity approach is adopted and geometrical non-linearties (second-order effects) are included. Non-linear yield conditions of column elements and geometrical non-linearity effects between successive plastic sections are linearized. Thus, load increment needed for formation of plastic sections can be determined directly (without applying iteration or step-by-step techniques) by using linearized yield conditions. After formation of each plastic section, the higher mode effects are considered by utilizing the essentials of traditional response spectrum analysis at linearized regions between plastic sections. Changing dynamic properties due to plastification in the system are used on the calculation of modal lateral loads. Thus, the effects of stiffness changes and local mechanism at the system on lateral load distribution are included. By using the proposed method, solution can be obtained effectively for multi-mode whereby the properties change due to plastifications in the system. In the study, a new procedure for determination of modal lateral loads is also proposed. In order to evaluate the proposed method, a 20 story RC frame building is analyzed and compared with Non-linear Dynamic Analysis (NDA) results and FEMA 356 Non-linear Static Analysis (NSA) procedures using fixed loads distributions (first mode, SRSS and uniform distribution) in terms of different parameters. Second-order effects on response quantities and periods are also investigated. When the NDA results are taken as reference, it is seen that proposed method yield generally better results than all FEMA 356 procedures for all investigated response quantities.
Multi-storey precast concrete skeletal structures are assembled from individual prefabricated components which are erected on-site using various types of connections. In the current design of these structures, beam-to-column connections are assumed to be pin jointed. Welded plate beam to-column connections have been used in the precast concrete industry for many years. They have many advantages over other jointing methods in component production, quality control, transportation and assembly. However, there is at present limited information concerning their detailed structural behaviour under bending and shear loadings. The experimental work has involved the determination of moment-rotation relationships for semi-rigid precast concrete connections in full scale connection tests. The study reported in this paper was undertaken to clarify the behaviour of such connections under symmetrical vertical loadings. A series of full-scale tests was performed on sample column for which the column geometry and weld arrangements conformed with successful commercial practice. Proprietary hollow core slabs were tied to the beams by tensile reinforcing bars, which also provide the in-plane continuity across the connections. The strength of the connections in the double sided tests was at least 0.84 times the predicted moment of resistance of the composite beam and slab. The secant stiffness of the connections ranged from 0.7 to 3.9 times the flexural stiffness of the attached beam. When the connections were tested without the floor slabs and tie steel, the reduced strength and stiffness were approximately a third and half respectively. This remarkable contribution of the floor strength and stiffness to the flexural capacity of the joint is currently neglected in the design process for precast concrete frames. In general, the double sided connections were found to be more suited to a semi-rigid design approach than the single sided ones. The behaviour of double sided welded plate connection test results are presented in this paper. The behaviour of single sided welded plate connection test results is the subject of another paper.

Current guidance considers that uniaxially loaded specimen with a deep crack is used for the determination of the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature. However, reactor pressure vessel is under biaxial loading in real and the existence of deep crack is not probable through periodic in-service-inspection. The elastic stress intensity factor and the elastic-plastic J-integral which were used for crack-tip stress field and fracture mechanics assessment parameters. The difference of the loading condition and crack geometry can significantly influence on these parameters. Thus, a constraint effect caused by differences between standard specimens and a real structure can over/underestimate the fracture toughness, and it affects the results of the structural integrity assessment, consequentially. The present paper investigates the constraint effects by evaluating the master curve $T_0$ reference temperature of PCVN (Pre-cracked Charpy V-Notch) and small scale cruciform specimens which was designed to simulate biaxial loading condition with shallow crack through the fracture toughness tests and 3-dimensional elastic-plastic finite element analyses. Based on the finite element analysis results, the fracture toughness values of a small scale cruciform specimen were estimated, and the geometry-dependent factors of the cruciform specimen considered in the present study were determined. Finally, the transferability of the test results of these specimens was discussed.
