공극스케일에서의 시뮬레이션을 통한 암석물성의 이해와 예측 (Understanding and predicting physical properties of rocks through pore-scale numerical simulations)

  • 지구과학은 지구와 지구시스템을 기술(description)하던 기존의 역할에서 벗어나, 진화하는 지구 시스템 안에서 일어나는 프로세스의 모델링(process modeling), 시뮬레이션(simulation) 그리고 이러한 현상들을 구상화(visualization)하는 방향으로 그 접근 방법이 서서히 그러나 매우 역동적으로 변화하고 있다. 하지만 이러한 모델링 및 시뮬레이션은 현대의 컴퓨터 기술의 발달에도 불구하고 그 수행이 쉽지는 않다. 그 이유로는 지구의 현상들은 그 현상의 기초원인이 되는 물리적 화학적 프로세스들이 비선형적이며, 서로 다른 프로세스들이 상호 연동되어 발생하고, 시간에 따라 변화를 보이기 때문이다. 더구나 이러한 복잡한 프로세스들이 암석의 공극구조라는 매우 복잡한 구조 안에 일어날 때, 그 현상의 모델링 및 시뮬레이션은 그 어려움이 더욱 커지게 된다.따라서 이러한 지구시스템의 여러 가지 프로세스들에 대한 효과적인 모델링 및 시뮬레이션을 위해선 지구의 기본 구성단위인 암석의 구조, 즉 복잡한 공극구조의 이해 및 그 형태를 효과적으로 컴퓨터상에서 수치적으로 기술하는 방법의 개발이 선행되어야 한다. 본 발표에서는 이러한 공극스케일의 모델링을 위한 격자볼츠만 방법, 유한요소법을 이용한 수치방법과 그 결과와, 지구의 여러가지 비선형적이고 시간종속적인 프로세서의 모델링에의 응용가능성에 대한 내용을 제시한다.

Impact of the masonry infills on the correlation between seismic intensity measures and damage of R/C buildings

  • This paper investigates the role of the masonry infills on the correlation between widely used earthquake Intensity Measures (IMs) and the damage state of 3D R/C buildings taking into account the orientation of the seismic input. For the purposes of the investigation an extensive parametric study is conducted using 60 R/C buildings with different heights, structural systems and masonry infills' distributions. The results reveal that the correlation between the IMs and the seismic damage can be strongly affected by the masonry infills' distribution, depending on the special characteristics of the structural system, the number of stories and the incident angle.

  • As the power facilities grow up, the optimal operation and the best maintenance of power plant can not be overestimated too much, which can enhance the plant availability and reliability much further. In this respect, fault diagnosis methodologies of dynamic system which is time-varing and strongly nonlinear have been studied. On of them is to use algorithm which is based on time-invariant, linear system, but this is not so nice a method for applying to power Plant. Therefore, the study on other techniques using Artificial Intelligence (AI) is under way. In this paper, the existing ways of fault detection are surveyed and their problems are also discussed.

차륜/레일 기하학적 접촉 시뮬레이션 프로그램 개발 (Development of a Wheel/Rail Geometric Contact Simulation Program)

  • Wheel/Rail geometric constraint relationships, such as effective conicity and gravitational stiffness, strongly influence the lateral dynamics of railway vehicles. In general, these geometric contact characteristics are nonlinear functions of the wheelset lateral displacement. There is a need to develop a wheel/rail geometric contact simulation program for wheels and rails with arbitrary profiles for the prediction of the dynamic behavior of railway vehicles. An algorithm to simulate any combination of wheels and rails is employed and a GUI for easy analysis is constructed. The simulation program is applied to KTX which will run on both KTX and conventional rails, two rail standards having different rail profiles. The results show that the two rail systems have different geometric contact characteristic

  • This paper is concerned with the modeling and identification of sequencing batch reactor (SBR) via genetic algorithm based polynomial neural network (GA-based PNN). The model describes a biological SBR used in the wastewater treatment process fur nitrogen removal. A conventional polynomial neural network (PNN) is applied to construct a predictive model of SBR process fur nitrogen removal before. But the performances of PNN depend strongly on the number of input variables available to the model, the number of input variables and type (order) of the polynomials to each node. They must be fixed by the designer in advance before the architecture is constructed. So the trial and error method must go with heavy computation burden and low efficiency. To alleviate these problems, we propose GA-based PNN. The order of the polynomial, the number of input variables, and the optimum input variables are encoded as a chromosome and fitness of each chromosome is computed. Simulation results have shown that the complex SBR process can be modeled reasonably well by the present scheme with a much simpler structure compared with the conventional PNN model.

Energy dissipation system for earthquake protection of cable-stayed bridge towers

  • For economical earthquake resistant design of cable-stayed bridge tower, the use of energy dissipation systems for the earthquake protection of steel structures represents an alternative seismic design method where the tower structure could be constructed to dissipate a large amount of earthquake input energy through inelastic deformations in certain positions, which could be easily retrofitted after damage. The design of energy dissipation systems for bridges could be achieved as the result of two conflicting requirements: no damage under serviceability limit state load condition and maximum dissipation under ultimate limit state load condition. A new concept for cable-stayed bridge tower seismic design that incorporates sacrificial link scheme of low yield point steel horizontal beam is introduced to enable the tower frame structure to remain elastic under large seismic excitation. A nonlinear dynamic analysis for the tower model with the proposed energy dissipation systems is carried out and compared to the response obtained for the tower with its original configuration. The improvement in seismic performance of the tower with supplemental passive energy dissipation system has been measured in terms of the reduction achieved in different response quantities. Obtained results show that the proposed energy dissipation system of low yield point steel seismic link could strongly enhance the seismic performance of the tower structure where the tower and the overall bridge demands are significantly reduced. Low yield point steel seismic link effectively reduces the damage of main structural members under earthquake loading as seismic link yield level decreases due their exceptional behavior as well as its ability to undergo early plastic deformations achieving the concentration of inelastic deformation at tower horizontal beam.

ZnO-Bi2O3-Sb2O3 세라믹스의 전기적 특성 (Electrical Properties of ZnO-Bi2O3-Sb2O3 Ceramics)

  • In this study, it has been investigated on the changing behavior of electrical properties in $ZnO-Bi_2O_3-Sb_2O_3$ (Sb/Bi=2.0, 1.0 and 0.5) ceramics. The samples were prepared by conventional ceramic process, and then characterized by I-V, C-V curve plots, impedance and modulus spectroscopy (IS & MS) measurement. The electrical properties of ZBS systems were strongly dependent on Sb/Bi. In ZBS systems, the varistor characteristics were deteriorated noticeably with increasing Sb/Bi and the donor density and interface state density were increased with increasing Sb/Bi. On the other hand, we observed that the grain boundary reacted actively with the ambient oxygen according to Sb/Bi ratio. Especially the grain boundaries of Sb/Bi=0.5 systems were divided into two types, i.e. sensitive to oxygen and thus electrically active one and electrically inactive intergranular one with temperature. Besides, the increased pyrochlore and $\beta$-spinel phase with Sb/Bi ratio caused the distributional inhomogeneity in the grain boundary barrier height and the temperature instability. To the contrary, the grain boundary layer was relatively homogeneous and more stable to temperature change and kept the system highly nonlinear at high Bi-rich phase contents.

회귀분석을 통한 선형 단면의 변환가능 중점영역 예측 (A Method to Predict the Feasible Region of Geometric Centroid for Closed Hull Form Area Using Regression Analysis)

  • There is a constant demand for hull variation related to ship design. Various input variables are generally given to achieve the objective functions assigned by each variation process. When dealing with geometric shapes accompanied by nonlinear operations during the variation process, vague relationships or uncertainties among input variables are commonly observed. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to identify those uncertainty factors in advance. A method to modify the shape of a closed hull form with a new area and a centroid had been introduced as a new process of hull variation. Since uncertainty between input variables still existed in the method, however, it was not easy for the user to enter the area and the corresponding centroid. To overcome this problem, a method is presented in this paper to provide the feasible region of centroids for a given area. By utilizing the concept and techniques used in the statistics such as the number of samples, probability, margin error, and level of confidence, this method generates the distribution of possible centroids along the regression curve. The result shows that the method helps the user to choose an appropriate input value following his or her design intention.

고분자 전해질 연료전지용 막가습기의 상대습도 추정을 위한 소프트센서 개발 (Soft Sensor Development for Predicting the Relative Humidity of a Membrane Humidifier for PEM Fuel Cells)

  • It is important to accurately measure and control the relative humidity of humidified gas entering a PEM (polymer electrolyte membrane) fuel cell stack because the level of humidification strongly affects the performance and durability of the stack. Humidity measurement devices can be used to directly measure the relative humidity, but they cost much to be equipped and occupy spaces in a fuel cell system. We present soft sensors for predicting the relative humidity without actual humidity measuring devices. By combining FIR (finite impulse response) model with PLS (partial least square) and SVM (support vector machine) regression models, DPLS (dynamic PLS) and DSVM (dynamic SVM) soft sensors were developed to correctly estimate the relative humidity of humidified gases exiting a planar-type membrane humidifier. The DSVM soft sensor showed a better prediction performance than the DPLS one because it is able to capture nonlinear correlations between the relative humidity and the input data of the soft sensors. Without actual humidity sensors, the soft sensors presented in this work can be used to monitor and control the humidity in operation of PEM fuel cell systems.
