In the manufacturing process of PCB , three kinds of VOCs such as aceton, methanol and 2-metoxyethanol are being used. In this study, adsorption characteristics of activated carbon fibers(ACFs) and active carbon were examined to temove these VOCs. The experimental results showed that ACF has better adsorption and regeneration efficiency than activated carbon. Phenolic-resin based ACF showed the highest adsorption capacity and the capacity was not decreased after repeated regeneration by steam. On the adsorption and desorption experiments for ternary components, preferential adsorption with roll-over phenomena was appeared. 2-Metoxyethanol was strong adsorbaste and it displaced adsorbed methanol and aceton.
The main goals of this work are to investigate the effect of molecular weight distribution(MWD) and activated carbon adsorption capacity after conventional coagulation and enhanced coagulation. The ozonation was very effective to decompose the NOM to smaller size and to remove molecular smaller than 1,000. The concentration of DOC was reduced 0.25mg/L and 0.56mg/L by the conventional coagulation and the enhanced coagulation, respectively The conventional coagulation was not effective to remove NOM. However, the enhanced coagulation was effective to remove MW bigger than 10,000. The higher MW was shifted to smaller weight by ozonation in the raw water and the after conventional coagulation. After enhanced coagulation the MW had not changed significantly by ozonation. Also, it was observed that the ozone dosage did not have significant impact on MW shifting to smaller size. The adsorption capacity simulated by IAST comparing K values showed that the adsorption capacity was not impacted by ozone doses. There was very strong correlation between MW smaller than 10,000 and the mid- and strongly adsorbable fractions.

Carbon based sorbents for $CO_2$ adsorption were prepared by impregnation with alkali metals ($Li^+$, $K^+$) and alkaline earth metals ($Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$). BET surface area of test sorbents was lower than the intrinsic activated carbon. In particular, impregnation of $Ca^{2+}$ or $Mg^{2+}$ resulted in lower surface area of specific adsorption sites than that of $Li^+$ or $K^+$. While the adsorption capacity for $CO_2$ was high in the sorbents containing $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$, strong interaction with $CO_2$ would cause to drop the capacity after regeneration. The adsorption was found high relatively in the flow with a high concentration of $CO_2$ and in a low flow rate. The adsorption isotherm for the present modified AC sorbents fits well with the Freundlich model.
Soil properties which affect the retention of Pb(I) were investigated in the laboratory. It was determined, through selective removal, that organic matter and Fe-oxides are of lesser importance in influencing Pb retention than are soil clay minerals. The following trend : clays > organic matter > Fe-oxides represents the relative importance of each constituent in the adsorption of Pb by soils. The consistently greater Pb uptake by surface over subsurface samples was apparently due to differences in organic matter content, inasmuch as organic matter removal from both resulted in similar adsorption characteristics. All five soils stooled exhibited a pH-dependent trend of adsorption. The extent of Pb adsorption was least at low pH values(4~5), was maximum in the neutral pH range, and leveled off or diminished under more alkaline conditions. There was no strong correlation between Pb uptake and soil cation exchange capacity as routinely measured by the NH$_4$OAc method. A knowledge of clay mineralogy in conjunction with soil pH is suggested as being the most reliable guide to predicting Pb retention by soils.
The adsorption ability of heavy metal ions from the aqueous solution by chitosan, which it is well known natural biopolymer, has been investigated. The fundamental study in this research is focusing on the physicochemical adsorption utilizing the chitosan as a organic chelating adsorbent, adsorb especially heavy metal ions from the waste liquid solution. The adsorption ability of the chitosan between metal ions, having different characteristics with Mw of 188,600, 297,200, and 504,200 g/mol and degree of deacetylation (DD) of 86.92% and 100% were investigated targeting on the $Ni^{2+}$, $Co^{2+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, and $Pb^{2+}$ ions, respectively. The uptake of heavy metal ions with chitosan was performed by atomic absorption flame emission spectrophotometer (AAS) as conducted residual metal ions. It was found that chitosan has an strong adsorption capacity for some metals under certain conditions. Chitosan, which have 100% degree of deacetylation showed high adsorption recovery ratio and have an affinity for all kinds of heavy metals. In contrast, the molecular weight of chitosan was not completely affected on metal ion adsorption.

Development of hematite-coated sand was evaluated for the application of the PRB (permeable reactive barrier) in the arsenic-contaminated subsurface of the metal mining areas. The removal efficiency of As(III) and As(V), the effect of anion competition and the capability of arsenic removal in the flow system were investigated through the experiments of adsorption isotherm, arsenic removal kinetics against anion competition and column removal. Hematite-coated sand followed a linear adsorption isotherm with high adsorption capacity at low level concentrations of arsenic (< 1.0 mg/l). When As(III) and As(V) underwent adsorption reactions in the presence of anions (sulfate, nitrate and bicarbonate), sulfate caused strong inhibition of arsenic removal, and bicarbonate and nitrate caused weak inhibition due to specific and nonspecific adsorption onto hematite, respectively. In the column experiments, high content of hematite-coated sand enhance the arsenic removal, but the amount of the arsenic removal decreased due to the higher affinity of As(V) than As(III) and reduced adsorption kinetics in the flow system, Therefore, the amount of hematite-coated sand, the adsorption affinity of arsenic species and removal kinetics determined the removal efficiency of arsenic in the flow system. arsenic, hematite-coated sand, permeable reactive barrier, anion competition, adsorption.

Poly(methacrylic acid)-functionalized SBA-15 silicas (denoted as P-x-PMA/SBA-15 where x is molar ratio of TSPM/(TEOS+TSPM) in percentage in the initial mixture) were synthesized by co-condensation of tetraethoxysilane and varying contents of 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate in acidic medium with the block copolymer Pluronic 123 as a structure directing agent and then polymerization by methacrylic acid in the presence of ammonium persulfate as an initiator. The functionalized materials were characterized by PXRD, TEM, SEM, IR, and $N_2$ adsorption-desorption at 77 K. The investigation of phenol adsorption in aqueous solution on the materials showed that the poly(methacrylic acid)-functionalized mesoporous silicas possess strong adsorption ability for phenol with interaction of various kinds of hydrogen bonds. The adsorption data were fitted to Langmuir isotherms and the maximum adsorption capacity of the three functionalized materials P-5-PMA/SBA-15, P-10-PMA/SBA-15, and P-15-PMA/SBA-15 to be 129.37 mg/g, 187.97 mg/g, and 78.43 mg/g, respectively, were obtained. The effect of the pH on phenol adsorption was studied.
This study was conducted to improve the operating conditions of an adsorption tower filled with potassium impregnated activated carbon for high hydrogen sulfide capture capacity. Heat treatment modified the surface properties of activated carbon, and ultimately determined its adsorption capacity. The activated carbon doped with potassium showed 57 times more adsorption at room temperature than that of using the raw adsorbent. It is believed that uniform pore formation and strong bonding of the potassium on the surface of carbon contributed to the chemical and physical absorption of hydrogen sulfide. The SEM analysis on the surface structure of various commercial carbons showed that the modification of surface properties through the heat treatment generated the destruction of pore structures resulted in the decrease of the absorption performance. The pressure drop across the activated carbon bed was closely related with the grain size and shape. The optimum size of irregularly shaped activated carbon granules was 2~4 mesh indicating economical feasibility.
Soil residues of paraquat (1,1-dimethyl-4,4-dipyridinium dichloride) were determined in apple, pear, grape, and peach orchards for which 15 sites each were selected randomly from the corresponding large-scale production area throughout the country. Strong adsorption capacity measured using wheat bioassay (paraquat concentration required to reduce 50% root growth of wheat, SAC-WB) was also investigated on the orchard soils and the paraquat residue level was calculated against total SAC-WB values (SAC-WB value + paraquat residue). Average bound residue of paraquat on the 60 sites was 6.9 ppm, while paraquat residue in apple orchard reached 20.2 ppm which was the highest among the orchards and was almost double as compared with those in the other three orchards. Loosely bound residue of paraquat determined on the bound residue high top five soils occurred less than 0.5 ppm detection limit. Average SAC-WB value was 276.1 ppm and there were no any correlations between the SAC-WB value and clay content, organic matter content, and cation exchange capacity of the orchard soils. Paraquat residue level of the orchard soils against total SAC-WB recorded 2.43%.
The purpose of this research is to absorb and remove sulfur dioxide existing in the air by using ion exchange non-woven fabric. So we found out very appropriate condition of anionic exchange fabric scrubber by measuring amount of SO$_2$ adsorption under the atmosphere that concentration, velocity, and humidity was 100∼200 ppm, 0.6∼1.0 m/sec, and 30∼90 RH%, respectively. Ion exchange capacity of ion exchanger showed the maximum value, 3.75 meq/g at pH 4, and adsorption equilibrium time was the maximum value, 30 h when gas velocity was 0.6 m/sec, moreover, at 80$\^{C}$, adsorption equilibrium time tended to decrease more than 10 h. When concentration was 200 ppm, while reaction speed between SO$_2$ and ligand of fibrous ion exchanger was getting faster, adsorption break point had a tendency to get faster as well. In addition, when relative humidity in the scrubber was 90%, adsorption efficiency was 7.6%/h that seemed to be 30% higher than 4.6%/h coming from the condition that relative humidity had been 30%, and it was totally absorbed under 5 wt% NaOH solution in 5 minutes.
