A Road Feature Extraction and Obstacle Localization Based on Stereo Vision (스테레오 비전 기반의 도로 특징 정보 추출 및 장애 물체 검출)

  • In this paper, we propose an obstacle localization method using a road feature based on a V-disparity map binarized by a maximum frequency value. In a conventional method, the detection performance is severely affected by the size, number and type of obstacles. It's especially difficult to extract a large obstacle or a continuous obstacle like a median strip. So we use a road feature as a new decision standard to localize obstacles irrespective of external environments. A road feature is proper to be a new decision standard because it keeps its rough feature very well in V-disparity under environments where many obstacles exist. And first of all, we create a binary V-disparity map using a maximum frequency value to extract a road feature easily. And then we compare the binary V-disparity map with a median value to remove noises. Finally, we use a linear interpolation for rows which have no value. Comparing this road feature with each column value in disparity map, we can localize obstacles robustly. We also propose a post-processing technique to remove noises made in obstacle localization stage. The results in real road tests show that the proposed algorithm has a better performance than a conventional method.

Evaluation on Noise Characteristics by Field Application of Improved Rumble Strip (개선된 럼블스트립의 현장적용에 따른 사후 소음특성 평가)

  • PURPOSES : This research investigates traffic noise characteristics as change the transverse rumble strips shape from rectangular to cylinder at toll plaza of highway. METHODS : The traffic noise was investigated at two different places at toll plaza of highway. One is modified grooving, another is employed cylinder shape of TRS instead of rectangular shape of TRS. A measurement of traffic noise was conducted at same location and time period. The traffic volume information was gotten from office of highway office and vehicle speed was measured by speed measuring device. The traffic noise measurement was conducted from 13:00 to 23:00 and by pass-by method. Also, the traffic noise was measured behind noise barrier. Various distance from noise barrier(7.5m, 30m, 50m) and different heights(1.2m, 3m, and 5m) were parameter for measurement of traffic noise in this study. RESULTS : The class 1 vehicle was contributed from traffic volume which was increased 1,500. However, the distribution of traffic speed didn't change compare to previous investigated period. From this study, It was found that the external traffic noise was changed as function of geometric shape of TRS. The external noise from modified grooving was less than 1.2dB(A) of the current TRS. A difference of traffic noise was 20dB(A) before and after barrier. It came from a noise barrier effect as reduction of traffic noise. According to investigate a traffic noise distribution near barrier, there is similar noise characteristic as function of height at 7.5m distance from noise barrier. Also, There is no different traffic noise between 30m and 50m from source of the noise of sound barrier. CONCLUSIONS : Based on this traffic noise investigation result, there is a clear characteristic difference as changed TRS shape. The traffic noise was reduced by changed TRS shape. Specially, traffic noise was decreased although the traffic volume was increase for same investigation time and period. It is implied that cylinder type of TRS significantly reduces the traffic noise. The specification of various TRS will be studied in the future.

Construction and Design Related Issues in Road Widening for Concrete Pavement (콘크리트포장 확장접속부의 시공 및 설계상의 문제점 분석)

  • Through field surveys and evaluation on several widened concrete pavements, issues on construction and design related problems are broken down into three categories to be discussed; poor smoothness, influence of traffic vibration on concrete curing, and poor connection to the existing pavement. There are many places where about 100mm only of the marginal strip is removed and where defects such as widening and faulting are observed. Also cracks arise again from the patched areas due to stress concentration near the joint. Roughness on the widened concrete pavement was evaluated and there are some stations where the smoothness limit is over passed. For design consideration, shortage of the required force in the tie-bar is expected in case of road widening specially from 3 lanes to 4 lanes. Finally the average pull-out force of specimens made from the current practice was about 57% of the required force. New connecting methods were suggested in this study.

  • This study aims to clarify the characteristics of townhouse corresponding to the changing life style for the future, and suited to the small and medium urban areas of Korea(focused on Chongju area) from its traditionality and regionality's point of view. The results of this study are as follows; 1. The traditional design elements of Chongju area : 1) A court; a court of inner building - light, wind. 2) A balcony; intermediate space, cornice. 3) Eave line; a horizontal line for approach. 2. The regional design elements of Chongju area : 1) Maintenance of skyline which had the same building height as strip of road. 2) The formal spatial design elements to think about natural view. 3) Simple appearance and delicate detail.

  • In the study, planning indicator that should be considered in applying traffic calming technique was derived, and it was intended to analyze the importance of indicator that should most considered in planning traffic calming technique through AHP analysis on the basis of it. The result of planning indicator may be summarized by dividing into road section and crossing section. In road section, hump (0.35) for equipment stimulating reduction of speed, hump image/fort (0.31) for visual control equipment, and slalom type road (0.52) for chicane, and bollard (0.47) for blocking passing route are shown to be the most important and come before anything. In crossing section, signal indicator (0.33) for visual control equipment, rumble strip (0.44) for equipment stimulating reduction of speed, zigzag type road (0.65) for chicane, and blocking going straight at crossing (0.45) for blocking passing route are shown to be the most important and come before anything. The result of the study is judged to be used for basic material in applying traffic calming technique and establishing policy hereafter.

Noise Evaluation of the Rumble Strips Constructed at Tall Gate of Highway (고속도로 영업소 광장의 럼블스트립 관련 소음평가)

  • PURPOSES: This study evaluated a measuring technique for tire-pavement interaction noise that uses a noble close proximity (NCPX) method as well as for noise level measured inside of a car (e.g., Inside Noise Level) in term of rumble strips constructed at a tall gate. METHODS: According to the measurements of NCPX and inside noise level (INL), 1/3 octave band frequency analysis and overall noise level calculation were conducted in order to evaluate noise levels of NCPX and INL, depending on types of rumble strips. RESULTS: The tested sections of general concrete pavement surface and two different types of rumble strips were evaluated, using 1/3 octave band frequency analysis and overall noise level. From the analyzed results, it can be concluded that rumble strips generate a relatively huge noise levels when compared to the concrete pavement surface. CONCLUSIONS: Noting that above 3 dBA different noise levels can let drivers know that they are getting close to toll gate; therefore, they should apply their brakes. Thus, the noise levels of rumble strips are required to be reduced, based on considering the neighbors living near toll gates.

  • The reinforced earth wall, which is able to improve the strength of soil highly, is required in case of supporting high surcharge load such as high speed rail way, high embankment road, and massive reinforced earth wall in a mountainous area. And also, it is continuously required that the method is able to minimize the amount of excavated soil on account of environmental issue, boundary of land, etc., on excavation site. However, because the required length of reinforcement should be $60{\sim}80%$ of the height of reinforced earth wall for general reinforced earth wall, in fact the reinforced earth wall is hardly applied on the site of cut slope. In this paper we studied the design and construction cases of hybrid reinforcement retaining wall system combined with steel strips and soil nails, connecting the reinforced earth wall reinforcements to the slope stability reinforcements (soil nails) to ensure sufficient resistance by means of reducing the length of reinforcements of reinforced earth wall. And the feasibility of hybrid reinforcement retaining wall system, suggested by real data measured on site, is also discussed.

Study on the Changes in Evapotranspiration according to the Decentralized Rainwater Management (분산식 빗물관리시설 적용에 따른 증발산 변화 연구)

  • In this study, the influence of decentralized rainwater management over the changes in evapotranspiration was analyzed. The analysis method was obtained by establishing the decentralized rainwater management plan according to different scenarios, and subsequently examined evapotranspiration in the plan. Scenario 1 refers to the analysis of the existing situation, in which was 100% of a parking lot is asphalt pavement. In Scenario 2, the pavement of the parking surface in the parking lot is replaced with lawn blocks. In Scenario 3, some asphalt pavement was removed to establish a flower-bed type infiltration system to allow rainwater to permeate. In Scenario 4, infiltration and storage of rain water would be achieved by transforming the parking surface into lawn blocks, keeping the asphalt for the parking road while establishing a vegetation strip. The amount of evapotranspiration of the target site was analyzed with a water budget analysis program (CAT) using the 2001 meteorological data for each scenario According to the analysis values of S2 and S3, it was found that evapotranspiration is critically affected by the amount of area replaced with pervious area in the total target site. An energy equivalent to 680kWh is required for 1 ton of water to evaporate. Hence, it can be seen that the active inducement of evapotranspiration in urban area makes a positive contribution not only to heat island mitigation, but also to the small-scale water circulation process in a city.

A Study of the Relationship between Driver's Anxiety EEG & Driving Speed in Motorway Sections (주행속도와 기하구조에 따른 운전자 불안뇌파 분석 -고속주행시를 중심으로-)

  • For establishing a standard of design element of the smart highway, this study investigated driver's anxiety EEG according to running speeds and geometric designs. Also, the experiment was implemented on 60 subjects. Based on running speed data and brainwave data, which were obtained from the experiment, this study analyzes anxiety EEG according to running speeds and geometric designs, and finally draws a forecasting model of anxiety EEG by selecting affecting factors of anxiety EEG. Forecasting model shows that left curve is the most influential on anxiety EEG figure. The reason is because when driver is driving on the first-lane, his or her visibility is impeded by a median strip. For this reason, anxiety EEG figure increases. And also steep downward slope and large radius of curve are heavily influential on driver's anxiety EEG figure. It is judged that anxiety EEG figure is increased by high speed on those section. Thus, the forecasting model of anxiety EEG suggested on this study will be utilized for design phase, and will decide the design speed on the superhighway. So, it will be used to make practical and safety road.

A Study on the Analysis of the Physiological Growth Condition and Improvement of Street Trees in Seoul (서울시 가로수 생육환경분석 및 개선에 관한 연구)

  • The planting pattern of Seoul street tree could be divided into six patterns, that was, one row, double row, median strip type and bicycle road type. The protection facilities of installed street tree was inadequate, because it was so small and weak. Recently, the growth rate of street tree in Seoul was decreasing because of air pollution. Strong alkali soil proved to be inappropriate for the growth of street tree. Soil hardness of treepit equipped with treegrill was lower than unequipped one. From the analysis of correlation between the growth environments of street tree, we could conclude that the vitality of street tree are proportioned to the distance from the center of Seoul. The way of improvement for physiological growth and increase of street tree were as follows; establishment reform of street facilities, the installation of protection equipment, continuous and systematic management.
