In this study, a series of finite element analysis using LUSAS were performed in order to assess the quantitative effects of repair and retrofit of stringer in steel plate girder railway bridge with fatigue cracks. And cutoff types of end part of upper flange were considered as right-angled type and round-angled type. Also, as a method of repair and retrofit of fatigue cracks in stringer, perforation of stop-hole and installation of bracket were considered. From the analysis result, it was possible to assess the fatigue safety and fatigue life of stringer with fatigue cracks, and to estimate the stress intensity factor range in cut-off part of stringer using J-integral method. Also, according
to the method of perforation of stop-hole and installation of bracket, it was possible to calculate the crack propagation life at the cut-off part of stringer.
While the external axial compressive load is applied to only the shell edge of stringer-stiffened shell in the most of numerical and analytical previous studies (entitled as conventional approach), a part of external load is applied to the stringers in real conditions. It leads to decrease the accuracy of the axial buckling load calculated by the conventional eigenvalue analysis approach performed in the most of previous studies. In this study, the distribution of stress in the pre-buckling analysis was enhanced by applying the axial external compressive load to both shell and stringers to perform an accurate eigenvalue analysis of the stringer-stiffened composite shell. In this regard, a model was developed in FORTRAN environment to simulate the laminated stringer-stiffened shell under axial compressive load using finite strip method. The axial buckling load of the shell was obtained through eigenvalue analysis. A comparison was made between the results obtained from the model and those available in the previous studies to evaluate the validity of the results obtained from the model. Through a parametric study, the effects of different parameters such as stringer properties and composite layup on the buckling load of the shell under different loading patterns were investigated. The results indicated that in some cases, the axial buckling load obtained for the conventional approach used in the most of previous studies is significantly overestimated or underestimated due to neglecting the stringer in distribution of external load applied to the stringer-stiffened shell. According to the results obtained from the parametric study, some graphs were derived to show the accuracy of the axial buckling load obtained from the conventional approach utilized in the literature.

E/R bulkhead is watertight bulkhead between engine room and cargo hold. So, it must have sufficient strength about cargo load of aft hold. Especially, partial stringer deck between tank top and $2^{nd}$ deck of engine room must have sufficient strength because it has function of primary supporting member. Generally, cargo hold structure is verified through the direct calculation as finite element analysis of cargo hold, but engine room structure doesn't perform it. Therefore, we have performed finite element analysis of engine room stringer deck which considered cargo hold load. And then, it will be able to apply similar ship design.

The minimum weight design for the simply supported orthogonally stiffened cylindrical shell subjected to axial compression is studied by a mathematical programming. A smeared-out method is used for the computation of buckling load in the optimization process and optimization is accomplished by a gradient projection method. Maximum eight design variables and twenty-one inequality constraints considering the buckling, stress and geometric restraints are used. The three stringer types are considered as the optimization models : (1) rectangular stringer (2) I-stringer (3) T-stringer. Two design examples are compared with those in the other studies and the results demonstrate the validity of the present study. From the calculation the design with T-stringer can be more efficient than the one with rectangular or I-stringer.

Optimization of the aircraft panel assembly constructed by skin and stringers is investigated. For the design of panel assembly of the aircraft structure, it is necessary to determine the best shape of the stringer which accomplishes lowest weight under the condition of no instability. A panel assembly can fail in a variety of instability modes under compression. Overall modes of flexure or torsion can occur and these can interact in a combined flexural/torsion mode. Flexure and torsion can occur symmetrically or anti-symmetrically. Local instabilities can also occur. The local instabilities considered in this paper are buckling of the free and attached flanges, the stiffener web and the inter-rivet buckling. A program is developed to find out critical load for each instability mode at the specific stringer shape. Based on the developed program, optimization is performed to find optimum stringer shape. The developed instability analysis program is not adequate for sensitivity analysis, therefore RSM (Response Surface Method) is utilized instead to model weight and instability constraints. Since the problem has many local minimum, Genetic algorithm is utilized to find global optimum.

A composite Iso-grid panel is manufactured and tested by compressive load. Vertical stringers and side stringers are joined with skin by secondary bonding using a liquid type adhesive. Bonding fixtures were developed to attach the stringers to skin. A-scan was done for inspection of secondary bonding region. The out of displacement field is visualized by shadow moire system. The strain and vertical displacement are measured by strain gages and L VDT (Linear Variable Differential Transformer). A local buckling is occurred at all grid sections. After that, the final failure is occurred. The strain of side stringer is much less than that of vertical stringer and skin. Due to the side stringer, the local buckling is delayed. Therefore the ratio of the first buckling to failure load is greater than that of vertical stringer stiffened panel.
In this study, reinforcing effects of umbrella-type shell roofs structures such as stadium, exhibition, auditorium and museum are analyzed. Umbrella-type shell roofs treated in this study are practical shapes of conical shells. The objective of this study is to analyze reinforcing effects of umbrella-type shell roofs with stiffeners. Various locations of stiffeners, that is, edge ring A, B, center ring, junction stringer and center stringer are presented and the effects of reinforcement is examined. Also, the reduction effects of roofs thickness by stiffeners are examined. It is shown that the thickness of roofs can be reduced about $20{\sim}30%$ by junction stringer and more than 60% by edge ring A.
This study encompasses the performance of static and fatigue test for the 8 large scale test specimens to clarify the fatigue behavior of coped stringer and the effect of the repair and strengthening on the damaged stringer of the floor system in steel railway bridges. For the purpose of the research, the actual stress wave for the existing bridge was measured, the basic stress range frequency histogram was made and the equivalent stress range was calculated. Using the result from the equivalent stress range made by adjusting the stress range, the static and fatigue test was carried out by identifying the previous rehabilitation and after. As the result of the static tests, it was revealed that the level of local stress under the S1 specimen test of the real equivalent stress range was similar to tensile strength of the test material, and it was consistent with the requirement of the initiation condition of the fatigue crack. Through the various rehabilitation methods to the damaged specimens, the effects of the repair and reinforcement were analyzed. According to the results of the repair of effect, bolting the high tension bolt over the stop hole was confirmed to be more adequate method than drilling only stop hole to delay the fatigue crack growth. Futhermore, in case of the stringer subjected by bending moment, the reinforcement over the upper flange side was determined to be a useful strengthening method, and the reinforcement to the web of the stringer was not appropriate to accomodate as a adequate strengthening method. Also it was confirmed that the category of the fatigue design for the coped stringer met with the category E specified on the fatigue design criteria of the Highway Standard Specification in Korea.

An aircraft wing or fuselage panel of skin-stringer assembly can fail in a variety of instable modes under compression loads. Instability modes can be buckling of the panel, local buckling of the stringer, flexure, torsion, wrinkle and combined flexural/torsional buckling of the panel assembly. Although researches on these buckling behaviors have been carried out for a long time, there are some difficulties to apply to the practice because of complex theoretical and empirical equations. Accordingly, It is well known that leading aerospace companies are using their own in-house programs for the convenience of practical usage, but our domestic situation is that no such program has been ever developed. In this study a comprehensive program has been developed, which can identify the instability modes and the magnitude of reserve factor of the modes for the skin/stringer panel assembly under compression load. The developed program is based on the theory manual of the Airbus program APA114. For the verification, calculation of the instable reserve factors for the A320 wing panel and A380 low wing panel sections were carried out and compared with results by APA114.
