Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities were investigated from the portions of shoots and roots in accordance with developmental stage and in response to environmental stress and antioxidants using Rhodiola-seedlings. The rates of SOD activities were revealed highly at the portion of roots and its tip of seedlings in the latter stages rather than the initial stages. SOD activities of seedlings in the initial stages treated with sodium chloride and cadmium as environmental stressors showed the decrease by 15 and 30% with respect to the control, respectively. However, in spite of stressor-treatments, the activities in the roots were increased according to the growth period showing a maximum rate of up to 45%. Also, SOD activities of the seedling treated with ascorbic acid as a antioxidant were increased by 46% of control value, but this was similar to the rate revealed in the presence of stressors. These results suggest that SOD activities in Rhodiola-seedlings may be related with the important defence-system against injurious environments.
Noise is not only affecting the ear and the auditory cortex locally, but its influence is widely spread throughout the brain structures, e. g., the reticular formation, the brain stem nuclei or the subcortical forebrain area. Hence, any of the organism's activities can be hindered or stimulated by noise. High noise is a stressor and the catecholamine level can be used both as a stress marker and as an indicator of modified sympathetic nervous system activity. Several recent studies have found that the urinary excretion of catecholamines is increased due to high noise intensity, especially unexpectedly high and long lasting noise. The present study was conducted in order to examine the effects of noise stress on urinary excretion of ctecholamines in rats and humans. Rats were exposed to 90 dB noise for 10, 30, and 60 minutes, 3 and 12 hours. 24 hour . urinary samples were collected and the catecholamones were extracted by alumina and analyzed by HPLC-ECD. Catecholamine levels increased with time of exposure up to 60 minutes : norepinephrine concentration at 60 min of noise=1.038 ng/ml, epinephrine=0.636 ng/ml. Urine catecholamines of blue collar workers exposed to 90 dB of noise at the work place were collected between 2 and 4 p.m. and compared to that of white collar workers exposed to 70 dB. Mean norepinephrine level of the blue collar workers was 0.89 ng/ml (${\pm}0.25$), epinephrine 0.24ng/m1 (${\pm}0.09$), and that of the white collar workers 0.48 ng/ml (${\pm}0.12$), epinephrine 0.19 ng/ml(${\pm}0.05$). It was concluded that noise acts as a stressor and increases the catecholamine levels in both rats and humans.
This study was carried out to determine bioaccumulation levels of total mercury on various fish tissues in two streams (Banseok and Hasin Stream) and one lake (Yeongsan Lake) during April-May 2007. We also determined natural background levels of total mercury bioaccumulation to evaluate relative individual impacts of fish and compared the levels with reference sites as a preliminary study to evaluate heavy metal stressor using fish. For the study, we collected fishes in the sampling sites and analyzed the concentrations of total mercury in the liver, kidney, gill, vertebral column, and muscle tissues using Direct Mercury Analyzer (DMA-80, US EPA Method 7473). The levels varied depending on the types of waterbody and tissues used. Concentrations of total mercury ranged between 5.1${\mu}g$$kg^{-1}$ and 108.6 ${\mu}g$$kg^{-1}$ in the streams and between 5.3${\mu}g$$kg^{-1}$ and 87.3 ${\mu}g$$kg^{-1}$ in the reservoir, and the values were highest in the muscle tissues. Levels of natural background levels of total mercury, even though the sampling number was few, averaged 23.6 ${\mu}g$$kg^{-1}$ in the study sites. The individual and mean values in each system was not so high in terms of US EPA criteria of fish health and human health, indicating that the impact was minor in the study site. Further studies should be done for the determination of mercury levels in the systems.
This study attempts to discover ways to prevent and cope with stress m primary school students, Specific, ally, we wish to investigate the sources of stress and to identify the variance and frequency of coping methods which have been used by the subjects. After examining the school children's list of items about stress and coping strategies by on open structure method, subjects ranked the seventy of stressor's and frequency of a coping strategies by closed structure method. A survey was done of 720 students who were from the 4th to 6th grade in 4 primary schools in the Chonbuk area from April 1st to May 30th, 1995. The major results obtained from this study were the following. 1. The sources of stress bad were classified in 57 items Among the 57 items, 'were school records' 'illness of parents' 'death of family members' 'meetings with trouble makers' ranked high ranking in the stress ratings. 2. Severity of stress. the mean total stress scores were 186.4 with 285 as the highest score. 3. The kinds of coping with stress using were classified in 35 items, Among the 35 items, 'wandering and walking alone' 'mood getting out of the in any way' 'trying to forget the stressor' 'were among the highest scored. 4. Frequency of coping with stress: mean total stress coping scores were 67.9 with 140 as the highest score. 5. Difference m stress and coping strategies between sex, age, living district and religion groups were examined. 1) Significant variables influencing stress scoring were sex (t=-2,29, p<.001) and grade (F=6.33, p<.001). 2) Significant variables influencing stress coping practice were residence (t=1.94, p<.05), sex (t=-3.17, p<.002) and religion (F=5,95, p<.0001).
Purpose : The purpose of this study was to examine the stressors and coping patterns of dental hygiene students in a bid to boost the efficiency of guidance and counseling. Subjects and Method : The subjects in this study were 359 dental hygiene students from some colleges. After a survey was conducted, the collected data were analyzed with SPSS 13.0 program. Statistical data on frequency and percentage were obtained, and ANOVA and t-test were utilized. Findings : 1. The dental hygiene students investigated suffered the most stress with excessive workload, and anxiety about the national examination was the greatest stressor. Among the areas of stressors, school life put the most pressure on them(3.25). 2. The most dominant way for the dental hygiene students to handle stress was talking with friends(4.32). Out of the areas of stress-coping patterns, mental coping was most prevalent(2.94), and the least common stress-coping area was physical coping(2.23). 3. As for the relationship between the place where they were raised and stress-coping styles, physical coping and direct coping were more widespread among the students who were brought up in large urban communities than the others. Conclusion : As the dental hygiene students were different in stress-coping styles according to the place where they were grown, educators who nurture dental hygienists should offer customized education and counseling in consideration of where students were brought up.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the structural relationships among frontline hotel employees' core-self evaluations (self-esteem, generalized self-evaluations, locus of control, and emotional stability) as personal resources, customer verbal aggression as a job stressor, and turnover intention as a job outcome. Data were gathered from a sample of frontline employees of 10 five-star hotels in Busan via self-administered questionnaires. A total number of 405 questionnaires were utilized. This study used structural equation modeling to verify the research model and hypotheses. As hypothesized, the results demonstrated that core-self evaluations reduced customer verbal aggression and turnover intention, and customer verbal aggression amplified turnover intention. Finally, practical implications were discussed in detail and limitations of the study and future research directions were also suggested.

Objectives: The questionnaire of occupational stress index (OSI) has been popular in the workplace, and it has been tailored for bus drivers in Taiwan. Nevertheless, its outcomes for participants are based on self-evaluations, thus validation by their physiological stress biomarker is warranted and this is the main goal of this study. Methods: A cross-sectional study of sixty-three city bus drivers and fifty-four supporting staffs for comparison was conducted. Questionnaire surveys, 24-hour urine cortisol testing, and blood draws for dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate (DHEA-S) testing were performed. The measured concentrations of these biological measures were logarithmically transformed before the statistical analysis where various scores of stressor factors, moderators, and stress effects of each OSI domain were analyzed by applying multiple linear regression models. Results: For drivers, the elevated 24-hour urine cortisol level was associated with a worker's relationship with their supervisor and any life change events in the most recent 3 months. The DHEA-S level was higher in drivers of younger age as well as drivers with more concerns relating to their salary and bonuses. Non-drivers showed no association between any stressor or satisfaction and urine cortisol and blood DHEA-S levels. Conclusion: Measurements of biomarkers may offer additional stress evaluations with OSI questionnaires for bus drivers. Increased DHEA-S and cortisol levels may result from stressors like income security. Prevention efforts towards occupational stress and life events and health promotional efforts for aged driver were important anti-stress remedies.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate the minor stress in daily life related to undergoing hemodialysis and the relationship between minor stresses, coping skills, and subjective quality of life among the patients with end stage renal disease. Methods : Seventy seven patients on hemodialysis were enrolled in this study. Minor stress was assessed with daily stress inventory-Korean version(K-DSI), ways of coping checklist identified the use of the following coping strategies:problem-focused, seek social support, emotion-focused coping and wishful thinking. Socio-demographic data were obtained and World Health Organization-Quality of Life Scale(brief form) was also administered to subjects. Results : Participants mean age was $55.92{\pm}13.71$ years. The mean of the event, impact and impact/event (I/E) ratio scores of K-DSI were $29.06{\pm}21.57$, $88.69{\pm}75.88$ and $2.92{\pm}1.11$, respectively. These scores were much higher than normative data of K-DSI. Among the 5 categories of this inventory, the scores of cognitive stressors were highest. 5 categories of the inventory showed positive relationship with way of coping subscales, which showed coefficient of correlation between 0.259(p<.01) and 0.495(p<.001). However, no significant correlation was found between minor stress subscales and quality of life. Hemodialysis patients in our study used more emotional-focused coping methods, which was considered as passive way of cope than problem-orientated coping methods. Conclusion : The main findings of this study indicated that patients on hemodialysis showed higher level of perceived minor stress than normal population. The patients treated with hemodialysis tend to use passive way of coping primarily. For assessing the stress in patients on hemodialysis, clinician has to consider both level of perceived minor stress and the ways of coping the patients primarily use.
This paper examined the relationship between job stressor and job satisfaction according to the general property of disabled workers. Role ambiguity, role conflict, and role overload were cast as the factors of job satisfaction to explore their relationship with the general property and type of disabled workers. The results revealed that role ambiguity had the strongest meaningful relationships with job satisfaction and role conflict, role overload had not shown the meaningful relationships with their Job satisfaction. The reason of this results seemed to be from the fact that the work type available or not available to disabled worker was determined beforehand according to their disability type. Finally, these findings provide a guidelines of efficiency human resource management and strategic development program for the disabled workers.
Investigating cross-cultural differences of family stress and adaptation in Korea and Australia, 49 families in open adoption were administered the Family Index of Regenerativity and Adaptation-General (McCubbin, 1987), Family Problem Solving Communications (McCubbin et al., 1988), and Social Support Index (McCubbin et al., 1982). Data were analyzed by T-test and correlation analysis. Results indicated that adoption itself was the primary stressor in both countries. Korean adoptive families were under stress by family-oriented factors; Australian adoptive families experienced external family stress. Regarding family hardiness, coping efforts and family communication, Australian adoptive families reported significantly higher family functioning than Korean adoptive families. Findings suggested that a broad range of social support is needed to improve family adaptability in both countries.
