Steel pipe piles have been used as various deep foundation materials for a long time. Recent increase in steel material cost has made engineers reluctant in using it even with its good quality and ease of construction. Therefore when constructing with steel pipe pile, the decision to reuse the excessive pile length that is cut off from the designed pile head elevation after pile driving can be cost saving. This has caused many constructors to reuse the pile leftovers with new piles, but the absence of quantitative structural capacity behaviors of steel pipe pile after pile driving or appropriate countermeasures and standards in reusing steel pipe pile has resulted in wrong applications, pile structural integrity problems, inappropriate limitation of reusable pile length, etc. The structural performance analysis between a new pile and a pile that has undergone working state and ultimate state stress level during pile driving was performed in this research by means of comparing the results between the dynamic pile load test, tensile load test, charpy energy test and fatigue test for high strength steel of $440N/mm^2$ yield strength. Test results show that under working load conditions the yield strength variation is less than 2% and for ultimate load conditions the variation is less than 5% for maximum total blow count of 3000. The results have been statistically analyzed to check the sensitivity of each factors involved. From the test results, reusability of steel pipe pile lies not in the main pipe yield strength deviation but in the reduction of absorb energy, strength changes and quality control at the welded section, shape deformation and local buckling during pile driving.

In the southeast coastal zone of Yellow Sea, the tide characteristics showing ebb-dominant tide and tidal flow were confirmed by analysis of observed tide and tidal currents. Physical factors generating asymmetric tide were reviewed. Influence of bottom shear stress, tidal flat, and nonlinear terms in shallow water equations was investigated by two-dimensional tide modeling. The model results gave good agreements with observed tides, but the amplitude of simulated $M_4$ tide was less than that of observed tide. The tidal flats existing in the study area widely have great effect on the generation of nonlinear tide. The M4 tide is mainly generated near the tidal flats. The deletion of tidal flats prevents the production of the M4 tide. We can conclude that the wide tidal flats is a primary cause of tide asymmetry in the study area.

Seven constructed and three natural tidal flats were compared to evaluate state-of- the-art of creation and restoration technology for tidal flats. parameters studied were physico-chemical and biological characteristics of soils and rate of respiration. The natural tidal flats had higher contents of silts, nitrogen and organic matter compared to the constructed ones. The natural ones had reductive Bone below 2 cm whereas the constructed ones had oxidative zone from the surface to below 20 cm. The bacterial population in the soil of the constructed tidal flats was one to two magnitudes lower than that in the natural ones. Biomass of macrobenthos and microbial respiration rate, however, were not different significantly between the natural and the constructed tidal flats. The purification capacity by diatom+bacterial+meiobenthos and macrobenthos in the constructed tidal flats was higher than that in the natural ones due to deeper permeable layer for purification in the constructed tidal flats. There was an exceptional constructed tidal flat with similar physico-chemical and biological characteristics to natural ones. Shearing stress to the surface of the tidal flat by the flow of seawater was as low as that of natural ones. These hydraulic conditions seemed to be a controlling factor on structures and functions of tidal flats. The control of hydraulic condition seemed to be one of the most important factors to create natural-like tidal flats.

It has been demonstrated that majority of cells in the mammalian body such as myocytes and epithelial cells of skin and intestine respond to mechanical force or environmental factors and exhibit partial disruption of cell membrane, i. e., cell wounding, even in a physiological condition. Myocardial cells are rather apt to be wounded than other cells since they are definitely exposed to mechanical stress by contraction-relaxation and blood flow. However, the mechanism how myocardial cells protect themselves against cell wounding is not yet clarified. On this background, the present study was performed to elucidate whether albumin leakage is related to cell wounding and to assess whether diltiazem, a potent calcium channel blocker, is beneficial in isoproterenol-induced cell wounding in the heart. Hearts isolated from New Zealand White rabbits ($1.5\sim2.0kg$ body weight, n=20) were perfused with Tyrode solution by Langendorff technique. After stabilization of baseline hemodynamics, the hearts were subjected to bolus administration of isoproterenol and diltiazem as following order: $1.6{\mu}M$ isoproterenol at zero min (the beginning point): $16{\mu}M$ diltiazem at 20min; $1.6{\mu}M$ isoproterenol at 25min; $16{\mu}M$ isoproterenol at 45 min; $160{\mu}M$ diltiazem at 65 min; $16{\mu}M$ isoproterenol at 70 min. During all experiments, the left ventricular function was recorded, albumin leakage in the coronary effluents was analyzed by electrophoresis and Western blot, and myocardial cell membranes were examined by conventional transmission electron microscopy. Data were analyzed by t-test and linear regression test. Isoproterenol significantly increased the inotropic and chronotropic contractions, coronary flow, and frequency of arrhythmia, however, diltiazem did not influence on hemodynamics except decrease in the frequency of arrhythmia and a slight decrease in contractility. Isoproterenol also resulted partial disruption of myocardial cell membrane and inclose in albumin leakage, while diltiazem pretreatment showed number of electron-dense plaques in the cell membrane and a tendency of decrease in albumin leakage. These results indicate that albumin leakage may be an indirect index of cell wounding in the heart and diltiazem nay be beneficial to protect myocardial cells against isoproterenol-induced cell wounding. It is likely that diltiazem promotes resealing process of the cell membrane.
Objectives: This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between heat-related illnesses developed in the summer of 2012 and temperature. Methods: The study analyzed data generated by a heat wave surveillance system operated by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention during the summer of 2012. The daily maximum temperature, average temperature, and maximum heat index were compared to identify the most suitable index for this study. A piecewise linear model was used to identify the threshold temperature and the relative risk (RR) above the threshold temperature according to patient characteristics and region. Results: The total number of patients during the 3 months was 975. Of the three temperature indicators, the daily maximum temperature showed the best goodness of fit with the model. The RR of the total patient incidence was 1.691 (1.641 to 1.743) per $1^{\circ}C$ after $31.2^{\circ}C$. The RR above the threshold temperature of women (1.822, 1.716 to 1.934) was greater than that of men (1.643, 1.587 to 1.701). The threshold temperature was the lowest in the age group of 20 to 64 ($30.4^{\circ}C$), and the RR was the highest in the ${\geq}65$ age group (1.863, 1.755 to 1.978). The threshold temperature of the provinces ($30.5^{\circ}C$) was lower than that of the metropolitan cities ($32.2^{\circ}C$). Metropolitan cities at higher latitudes had a greater RR than other cities at lower latitudes. Conclusions: The influences of temperature on heat-related illnesses vary according to gender, age, and region. A surveillance system and public health program should reflect these factors in their implementation.
Objectives : Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's diseases are chronic inflammatory disease of the gastrointestinal tract identified mainly for diarrhea, stomachache, hemafecia. The source and pathologic mechanism about ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease are still unknown but stress, infection, a genetic factor, environmental factors etc. may be the cause of chronic inflammatory disease of the gastrointestinal tract recently. Methods : Because ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease is recognized as Ha-ri(下痢) or Jang-Byok(腸?) in Oriental Medicine, Rhizoma Coptidis Herbal acupunctures were injected in hapgok $(LI_4)$ which is used to treat intestinal disease in clinic. All animals were subjected to the injection of saline $(300\;{\mu}l,\;500\;{\mu}l)$ for a study control and TNBS $(300\;{\mu}l,\;500\;{\mu}l)$ into the lumen of the colon, 8cm proximal to the anus through the intestine. Rhizoma Coptidis Herbal (20 mg/ml, 0.4 ml) acupuncture solution was injected to the $LI_4$ (both hands) at the secondary injection time of TNBS in rats. And body weight, RBC count, WBC count, total protein, Paw edema rate, rate of protein leakage into CMC-pouch fluid, IgG levels and IgM levels were observed to study the effects of Rhizoma Coptidis Herbal acupuncture in hapgok $(LI_4)$. Results : In results, Rhizoma Coptidis Herbal acupuncture in hapgok $(LI_4)$ on TNBS-induced colitis reduced the rate of weight loss but had no effect on RBC and WBC count. And it reduced total protein concentration, paw edema, rate of protein leakage into CMC-pouch fluid, IgG levels and IgM levels. Conclusion : Data suggest that injection of Rhizoma Coptidis herbal acupuncture solution into hapgok has significant therapeutic effect on the colitis.
The Hancock porcine xenograft valves had been used in Seoul National University Hospital, mainly because of their antithrombogenicity despite of the predicted failure, from March 1976 to April 1984, and a total and consecutive 163 patients were retrospectively studied for late results with the special stress on the structural failure. The hospital mortality rate [within 30 days] was 6.1 %, and the 153 early survivors were followed up for a total of 822.9 patient-years [p-y][Mean * SD 5.38 * 3.02 years]. The linealized late mortality was 1.823%/p-y. Four major complications related to the Hancock valve were: 1.822% thromboembolism/p-y; 0.729 % bleeding/p-y; 0.972% endocarditis/p-y; 3.646% overall valve failure/p-y and 2.187 % primary tissue failure [PTF]/p-y. The actuarial survival rates at 5 and 10 years were 94.90 * 1.89% and 80.58 * 5.21 %; and the probabilities of freedom from thromboembolism at 5 and 10 years were 90.93 * 2.63% and 83.35 * 7.64 9o respectively. The probabilities from PTF at 5, 10 and 12 years were 98.02 * 1.39%, 60.62 * 8.89% and 49.60 * 12.34 %. One hundred-eighteen patients [72.4%] had single MVR [age, 34.0 * 10.9 years] with the operative mortality rate of 4.2%; and 113 early survivors were followed up for a total 616.4 patient-years[5.46 * 2.96 years]. The late mortality rate was 1.460 %/p-y. The major complications were: 1.622 % thromboembolism /p-y; 0.487% bleeding/p-y; 0.649 % endocarditis/p-y; 2.920% primary valve failure/p y and 1.785% PTF/p-y. The actuarial survival rates were 97.08 * 1.67%[at 5 years] and 81.27 * 6.64%[at 10 years], and the probabilities of freedom from thromboembolism 92.44 * 2.76 %[at 5 years] and 80.89 * 11.08%[at 10 years]. The probabilities of freedom from PTF at 5 and 10 years were 98 70 * 1.29% and 65.59 * 9.78% respectively. The mean age of 11 patients of PTF was 25.7 * 8.8 years and the valve extraction period 7.16 * 1.45 years. Failure of bioprosthetic xenograft valves are reportedly known to occur earlier in young patients in an accelerated fashion. The study with two groups divided into the cumulative younger and the cumulative older patients according to the age limits of 5-year interval strongly suggested these tendency. Although PTF began to occur past postoperative 5 years and the probabilities of freedom from PTF increased as the age limits raised and the number of patients increased in the cumulative younger patients while they decreased as the age limits lowered and the number of patients increased in the cumulative older patients, the definite age limits from which the Hancock valve can be safely recommended could not be obtained. From the results, the Hancock valves are contraindicated in patients younger than 20 to 25 years and may be safely recommended in patients older than 45 years as a tentative conclusion. Further longitudinal study may define these age factors.
Several experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of external factors on germination and emergence of Eclipta prostrata (L.)L. The weight of viable achenes doubled as a result of 90 minutes soaking in water. The germination of E. prostrata was significantly improved by alternating temperatures. At a constant temperature of $35^{\circ}C$, only 78% of the achenes germination, whereas at alternating temperatures of 35/$20^{\circ}C$, 96.5% of the achenes germinated. E. prostrata was more sensitive than rice to moisture stress. No germination of E. prostrata achenes occurred in the absence of oxygen. No germination of E. prostrata achenes occurred in the dark or when they were exposed to green, blue, and far-red light. Germination of E. prostrata achenes was influenced by the duration of illumination after absorption of water. Ten hours of illumination was needed for maximum germination and 2 hours for 50% germination. No significant changes in germination of E. prostrata achenes were observed between pH 3 and 10. A high tolerance of E. prostrata achenes to salt was observed. Emergence of E. prostrata achenes was greatly affected by planting depth. In the upland soil, 74.0% of the achenes planted on the soil surface germinated, and no emergence was at planting depths of 0.5 cm or greater.
Considering the characteristics of the Korean family which maintain a close connection with their patients from the moment of their falling sick to hospitalization to discharge, the family is the most important environmental factor of the social supporting system, and is the important object of the client as well as activity system. The medical social work intends to meet the practical needs of aged chronic patients, providing them and their family with a professional human service. The end of this study is to find out the hardships of both the aged chronic patients and their family as well as their needs for the social welfare service, and to search out the way of comprehensive social work service. The summary of the analysis of the survey is as follows: 1. The needs of aged chronic patients are divided into those of the solution of the problems of falling ill, social welfare program and discharge. Those needs arc affected by the various factors of the types of hospitals, the patients' age, the kinds of insurance, and the supporting systems, etc. Accordingly, the assessment of the needs of the patients are asked to be done comprehensively in accordance with the kinds of diseases and social environments. 2. The importance of the family to the aged chronic patients is evident. The family plays a decisive role in the patients' hospitalization and discharge, the family being an important supporting system and making it necessary to take an approach to client system. The family has difficulty in getting connection of community resources, in adapting to social life after the patient's discharge, and in paying the treatment. The family suffers the secondary hardships more than the burden of the treatment expenses. 3. For this reason various interventions are needed to reduce the stress caused by supporting and nursing patients. Thus the social welfare service for the aged chronic patients and their family needs the following prepositions: 1. It is the characteristics of the aged chronic patients that they need continuous care and that the strengths of the patients and their family cannot be too much emphasized, and that comprehensive assessment based on the connection 'with the community and the mutual interchange 'with the environment, is much emphasized. 2. The family of the aged chronic patient is a resources system as well as a client one. 3. Another characteristic of the aged chronic patients is that with the resources connection in mind, it needs an active intervention of social workers in the community. With these prepositions considered, the development of practical social work service for the aged chronic patients is thought urgently needed.

Members of the TGA family of basic domain/leucine zipper transcription factors regulate defense genes through physical interaction with NON-EXPRESSOR OF PR1 (NPR1). Of the seven TGA family members, TGA4/octopine synthase (ocs)-element-binding factor 4 (OBF4) is the least understood. Here we present evidence for a novel function of OBF4 as a regulator of flowering. We identified CONSTANS (CO), a positive regulator of floral induction, as an OBF4-interacting protein, in a yeast two-hybrid library screen. OBF4 interacts with the B-box region of CO. The abundance of OBF4 mRNA cycles with a 24 h rhythm under both long-day (LD) and short-day (SD) conditions, with significantly higher levels during the night than during the day. Electrophoretic mobility shift assays revealed that OBF4 binds to the promoter of the FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT) gene, a direct target of CO. We also found that, like CO and FT, an OBF4:GUS construct was prominently expressed in the vascular tissues of leaf, indicating that OBF4 can regulate FT expression through the formation of a protein complex with CO. Taken together, our results suggest that OBF4 may act as a link between defense responses and flowering.
